My invention relates broadly to desk sets of the hydrostatic pressure type and more particularly to an improved and simplifledconstruction of desk set.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a construction of desk set embodying the principle of hydrostatic pressure in the feeding of the required ink supply and in which standard size bottles of ink nationally distributed and 'assembled on the open market may be equipped with a hydrostatic feed and readily mounted in position ,in a desk set for supplying ink to a dip pen.
a simplified and inexpensive construction of hydrostatic pressure feed type of desk set which includes an integrally molded receptacle and dip pen guide with means for strapping an ink bottle in inverted position in the receptacle for through thedip pen guide.
Still another objectof my invention is to provide a simplified construction of hydrostatic pressure operated desk set in which a standard size ink bottle may,be readily maintained in inverted position in a receptacle by means of a strapping device yieldably engageable with opposite walls of the receptacle for controlling the feeding of ink to a dip pen guide.
A further object of my invention is to provide a construction of hydrostatic feed adapted to be engaged upon the neck of an ink bottle adapted to be supported in inverted'position in a hydrostatic desk set and operating to control the flow of ink supplied from the 'ink bottle to the desk 'set.
Other and further objects of my invention reside in the improved and simplified construction of hydrostatic desk set, set forth more fully in Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved desk set of my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through one form of desk set embodying my invention; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 3- 3 of Fig. 2 and line 33 of Fig. 4; Fig. 4 is a horizontal transverse sectional view taken on linei-l of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a horizontal transverse sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 2; Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view of one construction of hydrostatic feed cap taken on line 6- -6 of Fig. 7 which may be substituted upon'the neckof the ink bottle for, the usual closure cap; Fig. 7 is a plan I view of the hydrostatic feed cap illustrated in Another object of my invention is to providecontinuously feeding ink to a dip pen insertable the specification hereinafter following by refer ence to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 6; Fig. 8 is a schematic view showing the' manner of starting the feeding of ink from the ink bottle when assembled in the desk set; Fig 9 is a vertical sectional view through a modified form of desk set embodying my invention; Fig.- 10 5 is a horizontal transverse sectional view-through the desk set illustrated in Fig. 9 takenonline Ill-I0 of Fig. 9; Fig. 11 is a vertical sectional view through a' further modified 'form' of desk set embodying my invention; Fig. 12 is a frag- 10 mentary'sectional'view taken through a further modified form of hydrostaticfeed attachment for an inverted ink .bottle; Fig. 13 is a fragmentary sectional view of a further modified form of hydrostatic feed device for an'inverted'ink 1 bottle; and Fig. '14 isa still further modified form of hydrostatic feed for an inverted ink bottle. s
My invention is directed to that class of hydrostatic desk set represented generally in my Pat- 20 ents Nos. 2,026,529, of January 7, 1936, for Combined inkwell and bottle, and 2,112,907, of-April 5, 1938, for Desk set. In the arrangement of my present invention, I provide a construction of molded receptacle and dip pen guide which may be inexpensively manufactured on a quantityproduction basis. The portion of the desk set of my present invention that constitutes a .receptacle is provided with supporting means arranged interiorly thereof, forming abutments against which an ink bottle equipped with a special construction of hydrostatic feed may be mounted in inverted position. The receptacle is so designed that standard shapes and sizes of ink bottles may be readily mounted therein. It is only necessary to remove the usual closure cap from the standard ink bottle and substitute the special form of hydrostatic feed embodied in the structure of my invention and mount the ink bottle in inverted position on the abutments provided for that purpose 'interiorly of the receptacle'. In order to maintain the ink 'bottle with relation to the receptacle, I provide a spring device which extends transversely of the ink bottle and yieldably engages opposite sides of the receptacle .for maintaining the ink bottle in position. In the event'that the desk set may be lifted by grasping the ink bottle, no injury results as the spring device maintains the ink bottle in position with respect to the receptacle. 60
The hydrostatic feed employed upon the ink bottle may be a foraminated screw cap,- an apertured stopper device, a cap having a central protuberance, a stopper device having a central protuberance, or a cap and stopper device having tubular protuberances which are eccentric with respect to the center of the cap or stopper device.
Referring to the drawings in detail, reference character I designates the molded base of the desk set having a projection 2 extending laterally therefrom. The molded base is interiorly apertured for receiving a molded receptacle 3. The molded receptacle 3 includes a vertically extending wall structure and an integrally formed dip pen guide indicated generally at4. The dip pen guide has its axis formed substantially on an acute angle with respect to the vertical axis of the receptacle 3. The dip pen guide has a hollow bore consisting of an internal cylindrical portion 5, a frusto-conical dip pen guide portion 6, a frusto-conical pen guide portion 1 and a cylindrical port 8 extending between 'the interior of the receptacle 3 and the frusto-conical portion I of the dip pen guide. A dip pen indicated generally at 9 is adapted to be inserted through the dip pen guide which includes a peripheral flange l8 adapted to seat against the frusto-conical portion 6 of the dip pen guide and a cylindrical portion ll extending to the rounded annular bead l2 at the extremity of cylindrical portion H. The penholder provides mounting means for the pen feed 14 which serves to secure the penpoint I5 in position. The penholder 9 when resting in the pen guide 5 in idle position has the flange [0 thereof in abutment with the frusto-conical portion 6 of the pen guide forming a dust-tight closure for the pen guide. When fully inserted in the dip pen guide as represented in the drawings, Figs. 1,2, 9 and 11, the penpoint I5 is submerged in the pool of i k l3 in the base of receptacle 3.
The receptacle 3 is provided with a plurality of supporting abutments disposed interiorly thereof, as indicated at I6, I I and I8. In addition to these abutments, there is an additional abutment l9 vwhich is bifurcated to form both a supporting abutment and an ink channel between the port 8 in the dip pen guide and the bottom of the receptacle.
The supporting abutments IE, l1, l8 and I9 are arranged in diametrically opposed relation and provide supporting means for an inverted ink' bottle equipped with the hydrostatic pressure feed means of my invention.
In Figs. 1-8, I have shown an ink bottle 28 which is of the familiar rectangular shape nationally distributed and readily available in retail establishments throughout the United States. The usual closure cap is removed from a screw threaded neck 2| of bottle 20 and in lieu thereof, a foraminated cap 22 is screwed over the screw threads 2| of the cap. The foraminated cap 22 is apertured at 23 for permitting the controlled supply of ink from the ink bottle to the pool 13 in the base of receptacle 3. The receptacle 3 is provided with lugs 24 which are molded integrally with the upper portion of the wall of receptacle 3 with grooves 25 formed in lugs 24. A spring device 26 in the form of a band having substantially'hook shapedyieldable ends 21 is arranged to be sprung over the ink bottle 20 so that the flat intermediate portion of spring 26 tends to continuously place the ink bottle in inverted position against the supporting abutments I6, [1, l8 and I9. The hook shaped resilient ends 21 engage through the grooves 25 under the lugs 24, thereby maintaining the ink bottle 28 rigidly in position. Even though the ink bottle 20 should be grasped by the fingers and the desk set thus raised, the spring 26 maintains substantially locked engagement with lugs 24 so that the desk set including the ink bottle is raised as a unit without danger of spilling the ink. As shown in Fig. 8, the hydrostatic feed of the ink may be readily started by tilting the desk set at a slight angle.
In Figs. 9 and 10, I have illustrated the desk set of my invention as embodying an ink bottle of the cylindrical type. The cylindrical bottle is indicated generally at 28 having a screw threaded neck 29 from which the customary closure cap is removed and into which a substantially flat stopper 38 is inserted. The substantially flat stopper 38 is apertured at 3| for the hydrostatic feed of ink from the ink bottle 28 to the pool I3 in receptacle 3. The stopper 3!] has the annular peripheral edge thereof provided with resilient soft material 32 which yieldably engages the interior annular wall of the neck of bottle 28, thereby establishing a leak-proof joint between the stopper and the ink bottle.
In Fig. 11 I have illustrated a modified form of hydrostatic feed as applied to the threaded neck 29 of ink bottle 28. The hydrostatic feed in this form of my invention includes a screw threaded member 33 engageable with screw threads 29 with a central tubular protuberance 34 depending therefrom. The central protuberance 34 is apertured in one side at 35. Protuberance 36 is cut-off at an angle represented at 36 so that the shortest longitudinal dimension of protuberance 34 is substantially opposite aperture 35.
In Fig. 12, I have shown another modified form of hydrostatic feed in which stopper 3], provided with annular packing ring 38 of relatively soft material, is mounted interiorly of the neck 28 of bottle 28. The stopper 3'! has a central tubular protuberance 39 thereon. The protuberance 39 is cut off at an angle indicated at 4|. An aperture 40 is provided in the protuberance 39 along the longest longitudinal dimension of protuberance 39.
In order that a fresh supply of ink may be delivered immediately adjacent the point l5 of the dip pen, I may employ a modified form of hydrostatic feed as represented in Fig. 13 wherein screw member 33a has tubular protuberance 34a extending therefrom in a position eccentric to the center of the cap. By this arrangement the bottle 28 may be angularly shifted to bring the tubular protuberance in close proximity to the point 8 of the dip pen. The end of protuberance 34a is shaped as indicated at 36a and the protuberance is apertured at 35a to insure hydrostatic feed of a new supply of ink immediately adjacent the end of the dip pen.
As indicated in Fig. 14, a stopper 31a secured in position by yieldable peripheral edge portion 38a may be provided with a tubular protuberance 39a which is eccentric with respect to the center of the stopper 31a. Tubular protuberance 39a is provided with an aperture 48a and an angularly cut-off end portion Ma. The fact that the tubular protuberance is eccentric with respect to the center of the cap 31a allows the ink bottle to be shifted to such position as will insure a fresh supply of ink at all times to the end of the din pen. 4
Venting of the desk set to facilitate the hydrostatic feeding of the ink supply is accomplished by virtue of the space existing between the side walls of the inverted ink bottle and the interior walls of the receptacle 3, whereby atmospheric pressure is maintained with respect to the surface bore of the pen guide 4 coincident with the plane of the foraminated cap 22 in the form of my invention illustrated in'Figs. 1-8,or the plane of the insert shown in Figs. 9-10, or the upper limit of aperture 35, 40, a-or a in the forms of my invention shown in Figs. 11,?12, 13 and 14, respectively. As heretofore noted, the hydrostatic feeding of the ink may be started by tipping the desk set as indicated generally in Fig. 8.
While I have described my invention in certain of its preferred embodiments, I desire that it be understood that modifications may be made and that no limitations upon my invention are intended other than may be imposed by the scope of the appended claims;
