1% Claims.
This invention relates to a ground spice container which is made with one end of the container provided with a large opening capable of being completely closed or being closed with a perforated-plate as desired by the user. The objCtS Of this invention are, to provide the container with a sufliciently large enough opening to permit the introduction'of an ordinary teaspoon and to provide two slides for said opening, the one slide completely closing the opening, and the otherslide provided with perforations to register with the perforations in the first named slide to permitsprinkling of the contents of the container therethrough; to provide a stop on the one slide which will limit the movement of one slide on the other in two directions, i. e., to have the perforations in the two slides register and to not have them register; to provide a handle or small finger piece on the movable slide to manipulate the same; to provide a=srna1l handle or finger piece on the'other slide to manipulate the same; to make'the several parts of simple and cheapconstruction, and other objects to become apparent from the description.
The-above named objects are capable of being attained by other constructions than those illustrated in the drawing forming a part of this specification and therefore I do not limit myself to the exact construction illustrated and desire that the appended claims be construed broadly. In the drawing Figure 1 is a plan view of the top of container provided with elements to conform with my invention showing the perforations open; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the perforations closed; Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the large opening open; Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line i of Fig. l, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 55 of Fig. 2. Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts.
As is seen in the drawing the container is a round sheet metal can and the two slides are constructed to be moved about a central pivot; however, the objects of my invention can be obtained in a similar manner by having the container or can of rectangular shape and having the two slides move back and forth in ways provided therefor; however at present it is considered that the construction illustrated is of cheap construction and preferred.
In the drawing; '3 is the container body; I is the top or end closure plate; ii is a hole in said plate 'l of semicircular shape; 9 is the under plate of semicircular shape; it is the upper plate of semicircular shape; both plates 9 and i9 are secured in place and are pivoted. abQU-t the two (Cl. Ebb-64) prongs ii punched up from plate or top I and bent over to form a fastening; l2 indicates the perforations in plate 5 shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2; It indicates the perforations in plate H); M is the bent-up edge of plate 9 to form a finger piece and stop, and i5, 55 are the bent-up edges of the plate l0 to form finger pieces and stops. While the bent-up edges M and it as shown serve as both finger pieces and stops these finger pieces and stops may be differently made without 10 in the least departing from the scope of the invention.
In operation, to completelyclose the container so that no spice can be removedfrom same, the plate 9 is moved about its pivot to completely close the hole 8 in the top '5, and the plate i0 is moved about its pivot by pressing the finger piece i5 against the stop or finger piece it on plate as clearly shown in Fig. 2. To open the perforations so that spice can be sprinkled out of the container the plate 9 is moved about its pivot to close the opening 8 in the top '6, and the plate i9 is moved about its pivot to have its perforations it register with the perforations l2 in plate Sbymoving the finger piece i5 against the stop or finger-piece M. on plate 9 as clearly seen in Fig, 1. To open the large opening 8 the plate 9 is moved about its pivot to have its straight edge approximately register with the straight edge of the hole 8 as clearly seen in Fig. 3.
When the large opening 8 is open as seen in Fig. 3, the overabundance of spice which may be on the work bench or table can easily be returned to the container and also when a teaspoonful or a half teaspoonfui of spice is desired to be taken from the container, the spoon can be insorted through the opening 8 and when withdrawing the spoon from the container the straight edge of opening 8 is used to scrape the spice in the spoon flat with the top edge of the spoon. To be able to insert a spoon into the spice container and by removing the spoon from the container scrape the spice in the spoon level with the top of the spoon is an important feature of this invention. Heretofore such manipulation with spice containers and spoons has been impossible. The movement of two plates one on top of the other on a spice can in a manner to uncover either a plurality of perforations or a large opening quickly and easily is also a novel feature of this invention.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
