Description

H. JUNGMA NN. Foot-Rest.
No. 217,621. Patented m 15,1819.
ENESfiES ATTORNEYS.
-Nv PETERS, PHOTD-LIIHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D C
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY JUNGMANN, OF MADISON, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOOT-RESTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,621, dated July 15, 1879; application filed May 5, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY JUNGMANN, of Madison, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin,'have invented a new and Improved Foot-Rest; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention is an improvement in the class of foot-rests which are composed of two plates or thin boards hinged together, so that when the device is in use one of said plates will be at right angles to the other, but when not in use one plate may be folded fiat upon the other.
Heretofore, such foot-rests have been provided with hooks or other devices which required to be detached or otherwise manipulated before the plates could be adjusted for use or closed together after use.
My improved foot-rest is provided with devices which require no manipulation when the plates are to be opened or folded.
In the accompanyingdrawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the foot-rest, illustrating its manner of use. Fig. 2 is a side view showing the same folded.
The plates A Bconstitute the foot-rest, one of them, A, serving as a standard, and the other, B, as the inclined leg rest or support proper. They are hinged together, and thus adapted to be folded together, as shown in Fig. 2, and thus occupy smaller space when not in use, or when packed for transportation, &c.
The form of hinges shown is composed of plates or ears 0, which are screwed to the side edges of the standards A; and of gudgeon D, which project laterally from the end of the plate B, and pass through said ears, as shown, thus forming the pivots of the leg-plate.
In order to lock the parts A B in working position, or at right angles to each other. the ears G are provided with notches or shoulders b, with which the lateral studs or lugs c of plate B engage when the device is adjusted for use, as shown in Fig. 1.
The leg-plateB is thus supported at the inclination, which will best conduce to the comfort of the person using the device. The device can be used with stationary or rocking chairs, and is also well adapted for hospital use, since it can be easily adjusted to patients requiring help to rest their feet or limbs, or both.
The edges of the parts A B are rounded to prevent wear or injury to carpets.
What I claim is In combination with the plates A B, pivoted together and composing the body of the footrest, the ears G having shoulders b, and the lugs or pins 0 projecting laterally from plate B, all as shown and described.
. HENRY J UNGMANN.
