Description

Oct. 10, 1939 J. L. NOTTINGHAM TYPE JUSTIFIER Filed May 20, 1937 WITNESS Patented Oct. 10, 1939 UNITED STATES PATEN T OFFICE 1 1 Claim.
The invention relates to a type justifier and more especially to a flexible, collapsible or yieldable spacing or justifying device.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein in the use thereof in the setting of short type, that is to say, the kind set on rails in chases and on segments, the lines thereof can be uniformly regulated to be of the same length and at the same time holds the type in perfect alignment during printing without liability of the loosening of such type or wobbling of the same in that a constant strain is maintained on the type.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein the spaces between the words in the set-up of type may be constantly altered so that the lines may be made the same length without removing the type from their seats and substituting either thicker or thinner spaces or quads as is conventional at the present time.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein the same will materially assist in and reduce the labor of justifying type when set, the device being of novel construction and is adaptable for use in multigraph machines or other printing set-ups.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, which is simple in its construction, thoroughly reliable and effective in the operation thereof, in that it is quite impossible to prejudge the exact length of lines of set matter from type due to varying dimensions of different type and different lengths of words and intermediate spacing, strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred and modified forms of embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of type bodies assemblage for printing with a justifying device constructed in accordance with the invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary elevation of type assemblage showing the justifying device by full lines in one position and by dotted lines in an adjusted position.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the device removed.
Figures 4, 5 and 6 are perspective views of modified forms of justifying devices.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, I 0 designates type bodies assembled in lines for printing purposes and these are of conventional kind, each of substantially eye formation for interfitting in an inverted substantially T-shaped Slot I in a roller or cylinder l2 employed in multigraphing or multi-letter printing apparatus. It is to be understood, however, that the type In, slot II and cylinder l2 are shown merely for illustrating the application and the mode of use 1 of the type justifying device constituting the present invention and hereinafter fully described because such device is applicable to other printing outfits.
The device constituting the present invention in a preferred embodiment thereof comprises a member formed from a sheet blank folded intermediate thereof to provide upwardly divergent inherently resilient arms I3, the intermediate bight or fold being indicated at M and these arms are cut into from opposite side edges thereof at l5 to effect substantially T formations of such arms l3 while the cross head l6 of the T forma tion of each arm is adapted for abutment or contact with a face next thereto of a type body l0 adjacent to the said device. The portion l I having the fold or bight M of the device is of a length corresponding to the cross heads l6 of the T form arms l3 so that in the application and the use of the device as a justifying medium in a type set-up matter, the said device will be interfitted with the groove I I similarly to the interfitting of the type bodies I 0 in this groove and thus eliminating any liability of the device becoming accidentally separated or removed from the groove ll during the printing operation. In the application and use of the device the lines in the set matter can be regulated for a uniformity of length thereof in the respective lines of the set matter. By the application and use of the device in association with the type body H) in set matter, the use of quads or space elements will be eliminated to a material degree.
In Figure 4 of the drawing there is shown a slight modification of the device, wherein the inherently resilient member I8 is of substantially M-form while in Figure 5 the member I9 is of substantially N-form and in Figure 6 the member 20 is of substantially W-form.
The device is preferably made from inherent resilient or tempered metal although the same may be made from any other suitable material and the shape altered from that in the preferred and modified forms of construction should it be found necessary. The device is readily flexible, collapsible and resilient for self-adjustment in its use as a justifier in printing set matter.
The justifier or device hereinbefore set forth, while primarily adaptable for a short type, the said device or justifier is susceptible for use with print face type, or What is more commonly termed, printers type, while the short type is known as typewriter or ribbon face type.
