2 Claims.
The object of this invention is to devise novel controlling mechanism for the even vent damper and the fuel supply to an oven burner and a broiler burner whereby the fuel supply control cannot be operated to supply fuel to either the oven burner or to the broiler burner until the vent damper has been moved into its open position.
A further object of the invention is to devise novel means independent of the fuel control for actuating the vent damper.
A further object of the invention is to devise separate means for actuating the vent damper control and the fuel control, the controls being constructed and arranged in such a manner that when the vent damper is closed the vent damper control will lock the fuel control in its inoperative or off position.
My present invention, although not limited to such use, is especially adapted to be employed in ranges having an oven, flue and burner arrangement constructed in accordance with my prior Patent No. 2,089,816, of August 10, 1937, and in which two different types of fuel can be employed for heating the oven.
With the above and other objects in view as will hereinafter clearly appear, my invention comprehends a novel range having novel controlling mechanism for the oven vent damper and for the fuel supply which is selective to supply fuel to an oven burner or to a broiler burner, and wherein the vent damper must be moved to open position before the control for the fuel can be operated to supply fuel to either the oven burner or the broiler burner.
It further comprehends a novel controlling mechanism wherein the fuel control is locked in its neutral position by the control for the oven vent damper.
Other novel features of construction and 'advantage will hereinafter more clearly appear in the detailed description and the appended claims.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawing a typical embodiment of it, which, in practice, will give satisfactory and reliable results. It is, however, to be understood that the Various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized, and my invention is not limited to the exact arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein set forth.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a range embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the fuel controlling means member.
Figure 3 is a sectional elevation showing more particularly the fuel supply control and a portion of the damper actuating means.
Figure 4 is a top plan View of the construction seen in Figure 3 with the front Wall of the range in section.

The construction and arrangement of the combustion chamber for coal and oil, the oven burner, the oven, and the coal and gas llues is similar to that disclosed in my prior Patent No. 2,089,816, of August l0, 1937, and since this construction has been on the market for some time and is now well known in this art, a detailed illustration and description is believed to be unnecessary. I will therefore explain such construction only in sufficient detail for a clear description of the operation, reference being directed to my herein identified prior patent.
The oven 2 is heated, either independently or simultaneously by a source of heat (not shown) such as coal or oil, or by an ovenburner 3. The oven is provided with a broiler burner H preferably located in the upper part of the oven 2. The oven has a vent opening 5 controlled by an oven vent damper 6 slidably mounted along side of the vent opening. The vent opening 5 leads into an open ended casing l, the ends of which open into the room in which the range is located.
yThe casing 'I vents into the main discharge flue 8 through a vent opening 9 controlled by a damper I connected at II to the oven vent damper 6 so' that the two dampers move in unison.
The vent damper 6 has its own independent manual control which must be operated to move the vent damper to open position before fuel can be supplied to either the oven burner or to the broiler burner.
The front wall of the range has secured to it a plate I2 having an outwardly extending annular flange I3 with which a damper actuating member Il! is in telescopic relationship. The member I4 is preferably cup shaped and has welded or otherwise secured to its rear wall, rods I which pass through the front wall of the range and are provided with means such as nuts I6 which limit the outward movement of the actuating member I4. circled by springs I1 which tend to move the actuating member I4 outwardly. A rod I8 has one end in the path of movement of the actuating member I4 and its opposite end is connected with one end of a lever I 9 fulcrumed at 2U to a stationary portion of the range. The opposite end of the lever I9 is connected by a link 2I with one end of a lever 22 fulcrummed at 23 to a stationary portion of the range. The opposite end of the lever 22 is connected by a link 24 with the oven vent damper 6. A spring 25 connected at one end to the Oven vent damper 6 and at its opposite end to a fixed portion of the range tends to move the oven vent damper into its closed position.
26 designates a two way fuel control valve having a pipe 2'! leading to the oven burner and a pipe 28 leading to the broiler burner. The fuel valve 26 has an actuating handle 29 and the damper actuating member I4 has an opening 30 into which the valve handle 29 extends when the oven vent damper is in its closed position. It will thus be evident that the fuel valve cannot be moved to supply fuel to either the oven burner or to the broiler burner until the actuating member i4 has been pressed forwardly suiiciently to clear the valve handle and permit its partial rotation in one direction or the other. The fuel valve 26 is provided with a fuel inlet 3| in communication with a source of fuel supply.
The operation will now be clear to those skilled in this art and is as follows:-
The valve handle 29 of the fuel valve is turned in one direction to supply fuel to the oven burner and is turned in the opposite direction to supply fuel to the broiler burner. The operator can use the same hand which he uses to operate the fuel supply valve to operate the actuating miember for the oven vent damper.
If now the operator desires to supply fuel to a selected burner, he first pushes inwardly the damper actuating member I4, which, pressing against the rod I8, actuates the linkage for the damper to move the damper into open position.
- Since the damper actuating member I4 has now been moved forwardly beyond the inner face of the valve handle 29, such valve handle can be turned in the proper direction to supply fuel to a selected burner.
The turning of the fuel valve handle 29 in either direction will retain the damper actuating member I 4 in its inward position, and, thereby, the oven vent damper in its open position. When the valve handle is returned to its neutral position the springs cause the valve actuating member I4 to move outwardly, so that the valve handle will extend into or through the opening 30, and the walls of such opening 30 will prevent the turning of the valve handle from its neutral position.
When the damper actuating member I4 is moved forwardly, it moves forwardly the rod I8 thereby turning the lever I9 on its fulcrum. This actuates the link 2l to turn the lever 22 in a direction to cause the link 24 to move the oven vent damper 6 into its open position. rIhe spring 25 returns the oven vent damper to closed position when the fuel valve is returned to its neutral position.
The springs I I return the damper actuating member to its neutral position and retain it in such neutral position when the fuel control valve has been returned to its neutral position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a wall of a range, of telescopic members having limited relative movement, one of which is secured to said wall and the outer of which has a slot to prevent turning of a grasping portion of a valve handle, a valve handle extending through said wall and having its grasping portion in said slot when the valve is closed, means tending to move said outer member into a position to receive said grasping portion and prevent its turning, and a rod adaptedd to be connected to a member to be actuated and having an end contacting at all times said outer member to be moved when said outer member is moved to release the grasping portion of said valve handle and said valve handle when turned engaging said outer member to retain it in its forward position and thereby said rod in its forward position.
2. The combination with a wall of a range of an inner member and an outer member in telescopic relationship, the inner member being fixed to said wall, the outer member having a slot into which the grasping portion of a valve handle extends to prevent turning of the valve handle, a rod extending from said outer member through said wall and having means to prevent its withdrawal through said wall, a spring between said outer member and said wall, an actuating member moved inwardly by said outer member when the latter is moved inwardly to release the grapsing portion of the valve handle said valve handle when turned riding on the outer face of said outer member to retain the latter and thereby said actuating member in their forward positions, and a spring to maintain said actuating member at all times in contact with said outer telescopic member.
