9 Claims. (01.51-190) This invention relates to'surfacing-apparatus such as abrasive wheels, discs, belts and like apparatus for effecting grinding, polishing, brushing, bufling, burnishing and other surfacing operations.
The invention is useful, for example, where polishing wheels in the form of rag buffs, bristle and wire brushes, and abrasive wheels are used to grind, polish, or buff articles of metal, hard rubber, Bakelite, wood, Celluloid and many other materials.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide simplicity of construction, to provide positive and uniform retention of the abraiding or other surfacing elements, to provide facility of renewal of parts, and'toprovide ease of convertibility.
These and other objects will appear from the following description and the accompanying 0 drawing.

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a polishing head with a polishing wheel constructed according to and embodying a preferred form of the invention mounted thereon.
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view of the polishing wheel; parts being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary end view of the same.
Referringto the drawing, which illustrates one embodiment of the invention, the numerals id and i I designate a pair of rigid members movable,
toward and from each other and preferably in the form of a-pair of discs, which may be centered on an arbor i2 or other suitable hub member. .35 At least one of the discs is provided with a perforate or discontinuous peripheral wall overlying the space between the discs for retaining the polv ishing or buffing elements. In the embodiment of the invention shown this wall comprises a series of rods i3, i3 fixed to one disc and having sliding engagement with the other. Each rod l3 has reduced ends which are engaged in apertures H, lb in the respective discs. All of the rods may be fixed to disc l0 and may be made slidabie "46 l in disc or alternate rods maybe fixed to alterl 55 form of an annular ring, is placed between the discs, and may be deformed by movement of the discs toward each other'so as to expand it against the abrasive elements to clamp them to the pins i3. The rubber expander ring ILis made wider than the filler block 18 and the abrasive elements so that lateral compression of the ring I1 will ex- 15 pand it radially to clamp'the abrasive elements.
As soft vulcanized rubber has the property of being deformed resiliently under pressure but is substantially uncompressible in volume, the abra- 1 sive elements are all securely clamped by the eleq- 80 ment i8 even though they vary'in thickness. By simply lessening theaxial compression of the rubber, the abrasive elements may be removed individually and replaced by others when worn. It is also possible to change quickly from one type of Si! some fiber compositions, for example, would be 85' subject, requiring reworking to be effective for subsequent use.
While the preferred form of the invention has been illustrated and described, it will be apparent that various modifications of the device may be 40 I made without departing from the scope of the invention.
I claim: v 1. An abrasive wheel comprising a pair of rigid members, one of said members being provided with a series of' spaced-apart pins for retaining a plurality of .flexlble abrading members, a deformable soft rubber member located between said rigid members, and means for deforming said rubber member to clamp the abrading member to said pins. V
2. An abrasive wheel comprising a pair of rigid members, one of said members being provided with a series of circumferentially spaced pins for retaining abrading members, the other member being adapted to slidably engage the projecting ends of the pins, a deformable soft rubber membei' located between said rigid members, and means for deforming said rubber member to a clamp the abrading member to said pins.
3. An abrasive wheel comprising a pair of annular members, deformable soft rubber annulus located therebetween. a plurality of abrading members, means extending over said annulus for retaining the abrading members,and means for clamping said annulus to distort it into clamping engagement with the abrading members.
4. An abrasive wheel comprising a pair of annular members, a deformable soft rubber annulus located between said members, a plurality of in- E sement with the abrasive members.
5. An abrasive wheel comprising a pair of rigid members, one of said members being formed with means for retaining abrading members, a plurality of flexible abrading members looped in -U- form about said retaining means with the legs thereof extending outwardly, a deformable soft rubber member located between the rigid members in position to contact with the loops of the abrading members, and means for deforming the rubber member to clamp the abrading members against the retaining means.
8. .An abrasive wheel comprising a pair of rigid annular members, one of said members having circumferentially spaced axially extending pins,
. the other member having corresponding apertures to receive the free ends of the pins, a deformable soft rubber member located between the rigid members radially inward thereof, a plurality of flexible abrading members looped about said pins with their ends extending outwardly, and means for deforming said rubber member to clamp said abrading members against said pins.

Surfacing apparatus comprising a rotatable body, a plurality of independent surfacing elements flexibly mounted for independent movement with respect to each other and arranged at said body in circumferentially spaced relation, and means on said rotatable body for independently holding said elements in place, said means comprising a resilient deformable member disposed in clamping relation to each of said plurality of elements and a clamping member for deforming the deformable member axially of the rotatable body to clamp the surfacing elements radially thereof.

Surfacing apparatus comprising a pair of clamping members, a deformable body of resilient rubber-like material located therebetween, means extending over said body for retaining surfacing members, a plurality of surfacing members each having a portion extending between said deformable body and said retaining means, and means for moving one of said clamping members toward the other to clamp said surfacirm members against said retaining means by distortion of said deformable body.

Surfacing apparatus comprising a body of rubber-like resilient material adapted to be rotated about an axis, means'extending thereoverfor retaining surfacing members, a plurality of surfacing members each having a portion extending between said body and said retaining means, and means for clamping said surfacing members radially against said retaining means by clamping pressure applied axially to said body.
