Application June 21,
3 Claims.
This invention relates to a stake hinge and the object of the invention is to provide a stake hinge assembly which will facilitate the fastening or mounting of an end .gate on the Wagon box of a truck or wagon.
The invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanyiong drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is an elevational view illustrating the application of the invention,
Figure 2 is a view taken substantially at right angles to Figure 1 and showing the hinge in side elevation, 1
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is an elevational view of one of the side plates forming the fork part of the hinge.
In accordance with the present invention the improved stake hinge comprises a hinge member 5 formed from a single strap of metal adapted to be bolted, riveted or otherwise secured as at 6 to a stake, end gate or the like, a portion of which is fragmentarily shown in the drawings and indicated by the reference numeral I. At one end thereof the hinge member 5 is provided with a hinge eye 8.
The hinge also embodies a fork member or section 9, and in accordance with the present invention the hinge member 9 comprises a body plate II] of wood or other suitable material to opposite sides of which are secured through the medium of rivets, or other suitable fastening elements II, oblong side plates I2. The ends of the rivets I I are upset and countersunk in countersinks I3 provided therefor. in the side plates I2 as shown.
At one end thereof thebody plate [0 extends beyond the corresponding ends of the side plates I2 while at the opposite end thereof the body plate I9 terminates inwardly of the corresponding ends of the side plates I2. At the last-named ends thereof the plates I2 are adapated to accommodate therebetween hinge eye 8 of the hinge plate 5. Also at said ends the side plates I2 are apertured to accommodate the hinge bolt I4 that is trained through the eye 8 for hingedly connecting the hinge member 5 to the hinge fork 9. v
The stake hinge as described may be used with a conventional form of hinge pocket I5 riveted or otherwise secured as at I6 to a portion of the frame ll of the wagon or truck body.
As is well-known the hinge pocket I5 is formed from a single strap of metal bent into a substan- 1938, Serial No. 215,012 (01. 16-149 tial U with the opposing sides of the pocket provided with lateral outstanding attaching flanges through the medium of which and the rivets or other fastening elements I6, said hinge pocket is secured to the frame I1.
Pocket I5 is adapted to accommodate the hinge fork 9 as shown.
Also in accordance with the present invention the body portion In of the hinge fork 9 is provided with a diagonal opening I8 therethrough. Opening I8 is adapted to register with an opening I9 provided in the outer side of the hinge pocket I5 and an opening 20 provided in the frame II whereby to accommodate the retaining pin 2|. Pin 2| has the shank thereof passed through the aligned openings I9, I8 and 20 with the headed end of the pin engaging the outer side wall of the hinge pocket I5. At its free end the shank of the pin 2I is provided with an opening therethrough to accommodate a cotter pin or other suitable retaining element 22. It will thus be seen that the pin 2I will serve to hold the hinge fork 9 within the hinge pocket I5 against vertical displacement. Obviously to remove the fork 9 all that is necessary is to first withdraw the pin 2| whereupon the hinge fork 9 may be bodily removed from the'pocket.
From the above it will be seen that I have provided a stake hinge which may be readily used with a conventional stake pocket, the only alteration of the stake pocket being the provision therein of the opening I9, and that such hinge can be used in connection with an end gate to the end that such end gate may be readily and quickly mounted in position on the truck body.
It is thought that a clear understanding of the construction, utility and advantages of an invention of this character will be had without a more detailed description.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:
l. A stake hinge embodying a pair of hinge members hingedly connected together, a hinge pocket secured to the vertical side of a supporting structure and adapted to snugly receive one of the hinge members, said hinge pocket and said one hinge member being provided with openings adapted to align when said one hinge member is finally positioned within said pocket, and a retaining pin engaging the openings in the hinge pocket and said hinge member for releasably securing the latter within said pocket, said pin forming a support for the hinge member and arranged to urge the member in a direction toward the supporting structure.
2. A stake hinge comprising a hinge pocket adapted for attaching to a vehicle frame, said stake hinge embodyin a fork member fitting snugly within said hinge pocket, said fork member including a body portion provided with an inwardly and upwardly inclined opening there through, said hinge pocket also having a wall provided with an opening with which the opening in the hinge fork is adapted to align, and said vehicle frame also having an opening therein for alignment with the opening in the hinge fork, and a headed retaining pin extending through all of said openings for releasably securing the hinge fork within said pocket.
3. A stake hinge comprising a hinge pocket adapted for attaching to a vehicle frame, said stake hinge embodying a fork member fitting snugly within said hinge pocket, said fork member including a body portion provided with an inwardly and downwardly inclined opening ther through, said hinge pocket also having a wall provided with an opening with which the opening in the hinge fork is adapted to align, and said vehicle frame also having an opening therein for alignment with the opening in the hinge fork, the inner end of the opening extending through the bottom of the frame and a headed retaining pin extending through all of said openings for releasably securing the hinge fork within said pocket, said retaining pin having a head on one end adapted to abut the side of said pocket and. provided at the opposite end thereof with a through opening for accommodating a retaining element for releasably securing the pin engaged with said pocket, hinge fork and vehicle body-,- said retaining element being accessible from the bottom of the frame.
