PATENT GFFICE 6 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a water pump device.
The invention has for an object the construction of a water pump device which is characterized by a high elevation tank for storing water to be subsequently used for power or other purposes, a low elevation cylinder having a closed bottom with a vertically projecting tube, a hollow piston engaging into said cylinder,.and a 1() novel mechanism for operating the hollow piston to pump water up to the high elevation tank.
The invention contemplates the provision of a vertically projecting tube upon a closed bottom of the hollow piston, and it is proposed to slidably and intimately engage this tube over the tube of said cylinder. Furthermore, it is proposed to provide a valve for closing the outer tube and a means for opening said valve in the down position of the piston for discharging the water from the piston.
Still further the invention proposes the provision of a tank with a lter and positioned below said valve, a pipe system for connecting the tank and the cylinder, and valves arranged in a manner to facilitate the pumping of water to the high elevation tank.
Still further the invention proposes the utilization of a natural force means for assisting in reciprocating the piston for pumping the water.

The water pump device, according to this invention. includes a high elevation tank I for storing water to be subsequently used for power or other purposes. A low elevation cylinder II has a closed bottom IIa with a vertically projecting tube I2. A hollow piston I3 engages within the top of the cylinder II and has a closed .55 bottom I3a with a vertically projecting tube I4 (Cl. 10S- 55) slidably and intimately engaging over the tube I2. A valve I5 closes the said outer tube I4.
A means is provided for opening the valve I5 in the down position of the piston. This means includes an arrangement whereby the valve I5 5 has a skirt portion I5a engaging into the top of the tube I4. This skirt portion has several openings I6 which are normally covered by the tube I4 in the lowered position of the valve I5. The upper end I2EL of the tube I2 is adapted to 10 strike the skirt I5@ when the piston I3 is at the bottom of its stroke for lifting the valve asy shown in Fig. 4. This latter position represents the open position of the valve.
A tank I? is provided with a filter I8 and the 15 tank is arranged below the valve I5. A pipe I9 extends from the bottom of the inner tube I2 to the top of the tank I'I, above the lter I8. Another pipe 20 extends from the bottom of the tank II below the lter I8, to the bottom of the 20 cylinder II. This pipe 20 is provided with a one-way valve 2| arranged to permit the passage of water from the tank I'I into the cylinder II. Another pipe 22 extends from the cylinder II upwards to the high elevation tank III. This pipe 25 22 is provided with a one-way valve 23 for permitting the passage of water from the cylinder II to the tank I0.
A water supply is provided for supplying the piston I3 with water and includes a pipe 25 hav- 30 ing a discharge end 25a terminated above the piston I3. This pipe is supported by a bracket 26. lThe pipe 25 extends to a tank 2l which is below the surface of a stream 28 or some other supply of water. The pipe 25 is provided with a valve 35 29 which may be adjusted to control the volume of water that will discharge therefrom. The valve is to be open at all times to permit a continuous ow of water. A natural force means is provided for assisting in reciprocating the piston I3. This means includes a lever 3l] which is pivotaly mounted by a pintle 3| intermediate of its ends. The front end of the lever 33 is provided with a fork 3|]a the arms of which are provided with slots 32 engaging a trunnion 33 mounted 45 on the sides of the piston I3.
A heavy spring 34 normally urges the rear end of the lever 3|] upwards against a cam 35. This cam is mounted upon a shaft 36 rotatively supported in bearings 3l. The shaft 36 is pro- 50 vided with a bevel gear 3B meshing with a bevel gear 39 on a shaft 40 extending upwards. A water wheel 4I engages the stream 28 and is mounted on a shaft 42. The shafts 40 and i2 are connected with each other by bevel gears 43.
The cylinder II and mechanism associated with this cylinder are mounted in a large box 45 which is embedded in the ground 46 adjacent the stream 28. A manhole 4l' is provided from the top of the ground through which access may be had to the mechanism within the box 45.
The operation of the device is as follows:
Water iiows from the tank 21 through the pipe 25 and discharges into the open top of the hollow piston I3. When this piston moves downwards and reaches substantially the bottom of the cylinder II the valve I5 will be opened because the skirt I5ft of the valve strikes the top portion I2a of the inner tube I2. The water then flows through the open valve I5 down the inner tube I2 along the pipe I9 and discharges to the tank I'i.
From the tank Il the water iiows through the lter I8 through the pipe 20 and discharges .at the bottom of the cylinder II. When the piston I3 moves upwards the valve 2| opens and water is sucked in through the pipe 20. The valve 23 at this time closes to prevent water from being drawn out of the pipe 22, When the piston I3 reaches the top of its stroke and starts moving down the valve 2l will close and the valve 23 will open so that the water from the cylinder I I is now forced through the pipe 22 up into the tank I.
The reciprocation of the cylinder i3 is partly accomplished by the spring 34 acting to move the piston I3 downwards. The cam 35 which is operated by the water wheel 4I engages against oneend of the lever 30 and acts to move the piston I3 upwards.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as deiined in the appended claims,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A water pump device, comprising a high elevation tank for storing water to be subsequently used for power or other purposes, a low elevation cylinder having a closed bottom with a vertically projecting tube, a hollow piston engaging into said cylinder and having a closed bottoni with a vertically projecting tube slidably and intimately engaged over said tube, a valve closing said outer tube, means for openingr said valve in the down position of said piston, a tank with a iiiter below said valve, a pipe from the bottom ci said inner tube to said tank with the filter, a pipe from said tank with the filter to the bottom of said cylinder and having a one way valve permitting the passage of water to said cylinder, a pipe from said cylinder to said high elevationai tank and having a one way valve, a water supply to said piston, and natural force means for assisting in reciprocating said piston.
2. A water pump device, comprising a high elevation tank for storing water to be subsequently used for power or other purposes, a low elevation cylinder having a closed bottom with a vertically projecting tube, a hollow piston engaging into said cylinder and having a closed bottom with a vertically projecting tube slidably and intimately engaged over said tube, a valve closing said outer tube, means for opening said valve in the down position of said piston, a tank with a lter below said valve, a pipe from the bottom of said inner tube to said tank with the filter, a pipe from said tank with the lter to the bottom of said cylinder and having a one way valve permitting the passage of water to said cylinder, a pipe from said cylinder to said high elevational tank and having a one way valve, a water supply to said piston, and natural force means ior assisting in reciprocating said piston, said water supply being controlled with a valve which may be adjusted to control the rate and volume of water discharging therefrom.
3. A water pump device, comprising a high elevation tank for storing water to be subsequently used for power or other purposes, a low elevation cylinder having a closed bottom with a vertically projecting tube, a hollow piston engaging into said cylinder and having a closed bottom with a vertically projecting tube slidably and intimately engaged over said tube, a valve closing said outer tube, means for opening said valve in the down position of said piston, a tank with a filter below said valve, a pipe from the bottom of said inner tube to said tank with the filter, a pipe from said tank with the filter to the bottom of said cylinder and having a one way valve permitting the passage of water to said cylinder, a pipe from said cylinder to said high elevational tank and having a one way valve, a water supply to said piston, and natural force means for assisting in reciprocating said piston, said means for opening the valve comprising an abutment against which the valve strikes in the lowered position of the piston.
4. A water pump device, comprising a high elevation tank for storing water to be subsequently used for power or other purposes, a low elevation cylinder having a closed bottom with a vertically projecting tube, a hollow piston engaging into said cylinder and having a closed bottom with a vertically projecting tube slidably and intimately engaged over said tube, a valve closing said outer tube, means for opening said valve in the down position of said piston, a tank with a filter below said valve, a pipe from the bottom of said inner tube to said tank with the filter, a pipe from said tank with the iilter to the bottom of said cylinder and having a one way valve permitting the passage of water to said cylinder, a pipe from said cylinder to said high elevational tank and having a one way valve, a water supply to said piston, and natural force means for assisting in reciprocating said piston, said water supply comprising a tank for a supply of water, a pipe line from said tank, and discharging into the tank of said piston.
5. A water pump device, comprising a high elevation tank for storing water to be subsequently used for power or other purposes, a low elevation cylinder having a closed bottom with a Vertically projecting tube, a hollow piston engaging into said cylinder and having a closed bottom with a vertically projecting tube slidably and intimately engaged over said tube, a valve closing said outer tube, means for opening said valve in the down position of said piston, a tank with a filter below said valve, a pipe from the bottom of said inner tube to said tank with the filter, a pipe from said tank with the lter to the bottom of said cylinder and having a one way valve permitting the passage of water to said cylinder, a pipe from said cylinder to said high elevational tank and having a one way valve, a water supply to said piston, and natural force means for assisting in reciprocating said piston, comprising a watei' wheel connected with rotation transmission mechanism, a cam operated by said rotation transmission mechanism, a lever pivotally mounted and connected with said cylinder, and said cam oscillating said lever.

A water pump device, comprising a high elevation tank for storing water to be subsequently used for power or other purposes, a low elevation cylinder having a closed bottom with a vertically projecting tube, a hollow piston engaging into said cylinder and having a closed bottom With a vertically projecting tube slidably and intimately engaged over said tube, a valve closing said outer tube, means for opening said valve in the down position of said piston, a tank with a lter below said Valve, a pipe from the bottom of said inner tube to said tank with the filter, a pipe from said tank with the filter to the bottom of said cylinder and having a one way valve permitting the passage of water to said cylinder, a pipe from said cylinder to said high elevational tank and having a one way valve, a Water supply to said piston, and natural force means for assisting in recprocating said piston, comprising a water Wheel connected with rotation transmission mechanism, a com operated by said rotation transmission mechanism, a lever pivotally mounted and connected with said cylinder, and said cam oscillating said lever, and a heavy spring urging the lever to maintain its connection with the cam.
