This invention relates to printing and duplicating machines such as are used. in oflices, of the kind in which the sheets of paper are fed to the machine from a pile on a table by a reciprocating feed roller and the reduction in the number of sheets is used for controlling the height of the pile table and the means of lifting the table is actuated by a member driven by the ing actuated by one phase of the reciprocatingmovement of the feed roller.
The parts which bear against one another when the number of sheets is reduced touch one another at first only slightly and slide off one another because at first these parts overlap only by a distance corresponding to the thickness of one sheet of paper, this overlapping therefore is less the thinner the paper is. The parts slide off one another as a rule several times until, owing to the removal of further sheets, the depth of engagement is so great that the parts engage without sliding. The parts are thereby subjected to heavy wear and become useless after a time.
These disadvantages are obviated by means of the present invention. To this end, in accordance wtih the invention, the parts which come into engagement when the number of sheets is reduced do not themselves effect the transmission of power and their engagement is used merely to bring into its operating position a coupling member which takes over the transmission of power. To effect this the driving connection between the paper feeding device and the means for raising the pile table is produced by a mov- O able intermediate member which brings the coupling member connected to the means for raising the table into engagement with a member driven by the paper feeder.
The parts which engage when the number of sheets is reduced are then subjected to hardly any load because one of the parts is carried along with the other part until the power transmitting coupling member has been engaged. The smallest depth of engagement is sufiicient for the actuation of the coupling member and. there is no possibility of the parts repeatedly sliding over one another and being damaged.
When the table has been raised, the parts may be returned into their initial position by the paper feeding device on its forward stroke, by 5 which the intermediate member is brought back into its original position and the coupling member is disengaged from the member connected to the paper feeding device.
One form of construction of a device in ac- 10 cordance with the invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a side elevation of the pile table actuating device, and
Figure 2 is a plan of part of the device shown in Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing, a paper feeding roller I is used for feeding the sheets of paper from the pile 2 which rests upon a table 3. The table 3 is carried by racks 5. The feed roller is caused to carry out a reciprocating movement by means of a lever 4 As the thickness of the pile of sheets decreases the roller I sinks and so does the lever l which is connected to it by means 2; of a shaft 6. When the pile of sheets as at an adequate height a nose II! of the lever 7 passes over a roller 9 and a sliding member I 3. When the thickness of the pile has decreased by a certain amount the lower edge It of the nose comes into contact with the edge I! of the sliding member and draws the latter along. The sliding member I3 then raises the roller 9 by means of a ramp I8. The nose It] engages behind the rollers and thus draws along the bar 8 which is resiliently guided by springs 25 and two bolts 24 extending through slots formed in the bar 8. The bar 8 carries a pawl 22 meshing with a gear wheel 25, the return movement of which is prevented by the pawl 23. The wheel 2| and the gear Wheels 29 are mounted upon the same shaft 59. The Wheels 28 mesh with the racks 5. When the bar 8 is moved, the pawl 2i actuates the racks 5 and thus causes the table 3 to raise, while the roller l and the lever 7 rise along with the table. 49
Upon the next forward movement of the paper feed roller a nose I I encounters the sliding member is which is connected to the bar 8 by means of the pins I2; This nose pushes back the sliding member I3 and the roller 9, which is mounted in the slots M of the rod 8 and the cover plate I 5, drops down upon the inclined surface I8 of the member I3. When the member I3 strikes the pin I2 the bar 8 will move back along with the 55 member I3 and the pawl 22 will again engage the gear wheel 2|.
In the course of the following operation nose ll] passes over the roller 9 and the sliding member l3 until owing to the removal of sheets, it is lowered to such an extent that its edge l6 again comes into contact with the edge I! of the sliding contact l3. Then the described operation is repeated.
The moved sheets pass in the customary manner between the rollers 25 and 21.
This mechanism may be conveniently attached to a side wall of a duplicating machine.
The described table-raising mechanism is well known in the art and does not constitute a part of the present invention.
I claim:
1. An ofiice printing machine comprising a table for supporting a pile of sheets to be printed, a feed roller resting on the uppermost sheet of the pile, means for reciprocating the feed roller, means for raising the table as the number of sheets supported on it is reduced, an actuating member for said table-raising means, an intermediate member movable on said actuating member, a member which is connected to and reciprocated with said feed roller and engages said intermediate member owing to the lowering of the feed roller as the sheets are Withdrawn, a coupling member on said actuating member, and means whereby said coupling member is brought into operative engagement with said reciprocated member when said intermediate member is moved in one direction.
2. An office printing machine comprising a table for supporting a pile of sheets to be printed, a feed roller resting on the uppermost sheet of the pile, means for reciprocating the feed roller, means for raising the table as the number of sheets supported on it is reduced, an actuating member for said table-raising means, an intermediate member movable on said actuating member, a member which is connected to and reciprocated with said feed roller and engages said intermediate member owing to the lowering of the feed roller as the sheets are withdrawn, a coupling member on said actuating member, means whereby said coupling member is brought into operative engagement with said reciprocated member when said intermediate member is moved in one direction and means for returning the intermediate member into its original position and disengaging said coupling member.

An oifice printing machine comprising a table for supporting a pile of sheets to be printed, a feed roller resting on the uppermost sheet of the pile, means for reciprocating the feed roller, means for raising the table as the number of sheets supported on it is reduced, an actuating member for said table-raising means, an intermediate member movable on said actuating mem her, a member which is connected to and reciprocated with said feed roller, a nose on said reciprocated member which engages said intermediate member owing to the lowering of the feed roller as the sheets are withdrawn, a roller which is movable upwards and downwards on said actuating member, and means on said intermediate member whereby the roller is raised into operative engagement with said nose when said intermediate member is moved in one direction.
4. An office printing machine comprising a table for supporting a pile of sheets to be printed, a feed roller resting on the uppermost sheet of the pile, means for reciprocating the feed roller, means for raising the table as the number of sheets supported on it is reduced, an actuating member for said table-raising means, an intermediate member movable on said actuating member, a member which is connected to and reciprocated with said feed roller, a nose on said reciprocated member which engages said intermediate member owing to the lowering of the feed roller as the sheets are withdrawn, a roller which is movable upwards and downwards on said actuating member, means on said intermediate member whereby the roller is raised into operative engagement with said nose when said intermediate member is moved in one direction and a second nose on said reciprocated member whereby said intermediate member is returned to its original position.
5. An oiiice printing machine comprising a table for supporting a pile of sheets to be printed, a feed roller resting on the uppermost sheet of the pile, means for reciprocating the feed roller, means for raising the table as the number of sheets supported on it is reduced, an actuating member for said table-raising means, an inter mediate member movable on said actuating member, a member which is connected to and reciprocated with said feed roller, a nose on said reciprocated member which engages said intermediate member owing to the lowering of the feed roller as the sheets are withdrawn, a roller which is movable upwards and downwards in slots in said actuating member, and an inclined surface on said intermediate member whereby the roller is raised into operative engagement with said nose when said intermediate member is moved in one direction.
6. An ofiice printing machine comprising a table for supporting a pile of sheets to be printed, a feed roller resting on the uppermost sheet of the pile, means for reciprocating the feed roller, means for raising the table as the number of sheets supported on it is reduced, an actuating member for said table-raising means, an intermediate member movable on said actuating member, a member which is connected to and reciprocated with said feed roller, a nose on said reciprocated member which engages said intermediate member owing to the lowering of the feed roller as the sheets are withdrawn, a roller which is movable upwards and downwards in slots in said actuating member, an inclined surface on said intermediate member whereby the roller is raised into operative engagement with said nose when said intermediate member is moved in one direction, and a second nose on said reciprocated member whereby said intermediate member is returned to its original position and the roller is disengaged.
'7. In an ofiice printing machine comprising a pile table, a reciprocating feed roller for feeding sheets from the pile table, means for raising the pile table as the number of sheets on it is reduced, an actuating member therefor and a member reciprocated with said feed roller by which said actuating member is driven, the provision of an intermediate member which, when moved by said reciprocated member, effects an operative connection between said reciprocated member and said actuating member.
