IMPROVEMENTIN WAGON-JACKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,645, dated J one 17, 1879; application filed May 12, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Gnonen A. BOGART, of Chester, in the State of Connecticut, have invented anew and valuable Improvement in Wagon-Jacks and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked there Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a sectional elevation of my improved jack. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the holding-bar.

This invention has relation to wagon-jacks; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement, in connection with a forked-head standard having adjusting holes through the branches of the head and at right angles thereto through its lower portion, of a longitudinally-slotted lever having catch-notches at the end of its slot, an adjustable base= bracket, and a transversely-headed holdingbar pivoted to said bracket and playing in the slot of the lever, all as hereinafter shown and described.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the standard, having a forked upper end, B, the branches of which are provided with series of perforations, a, at different heights, for the adjustment of the lever C, which is pivoted between the branches by means of the bolt 1) and thumb-nut 0.

Near the foot of the standard are adjustingperforations d, at different heights, extending through the post in" a direction at right angles to that of the perforations through the branches at the upper end, but separated by corresponding distances.

The lever C is provided with a stepped head, 0, of convenient form, and in rear of this head is vertically and longitudinally slotted, as shown at g, for a certain distance toward the handle end, each branch of the slot at the end nearest the handle being notched, as shown at h, transversely.

D represents an adjustable bracket, which is perforated through its lower end for the passage of the bolt k, by which it is secured to one of the perforations of the-standard, near its lower end, a thumbnut, l, serving to fasten the bolt after adjustment at the proper height.

The upper end of the bracket is forked, and receives the lower end of the holding-bar E, which is pivoted thereto, having first been passed through the slot of the lever.

The upper end of theholding-bar plays in the slot, and is provided with a transverse head, m, which is designed to keep it from falling out when the handle end of the leveris raised, and to engage with the end notches, h, of the slotted'portion of the lever when its handle end is depressed, and hold the latter securely.

The adjustment of the lever and bracket is readily effected by means of the bolts and thumb-nuts, and its operation is simple, the

head of the holding-bar being disengaged from the notches h, and sliding forward when the head of the lever is being applied, and falling back into engagement with said notches when the handle of the lever is depressed to raise the work.

I am awarethat it is not new to employ a holding-bar to connect the standard and lever, and I do not therefore claim such invention.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The lifting-jack consisting of a forked-head standard, A, having adjusting-holes through its head,- and through its lower portion at right angles therewith, a longitudinally-slotted lever, C, having catch-notches h at the end of its slot, an adjustable base-bracket, D, a transversely-headed holding-bar, E, pivoted to said bracket, playing in said slot, and engaging said notches, and suitable bolts and thumb-nuts, substantially as specified.
