Description

A. WAELTZ LUMBER RULE Jul 11, 1939.
Filed Dec. '28, 1957 Marian MBZZZ ATTORNEYS WITNESS Patented July 11, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The invention relates to a computing rule and more especially to a lumber rule.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a rule of this character, wherein the 5 same is usuable for reliably gauging the number of boards of selected thicknesses that may be cut in a saw mill from a log without undue waste in material and assuring a uniformity of thicknesses in the boards when out from the log.
10 Another object of the invention is the provision of a rule of this character, wherein adjustment thereof for gauging thicknesses of material may be had and the number of pieces thereof can be ascertained prior to the cutting of the pieces,
15 especially when cutting a log, the rule being novel in its make-up and is susceptible of easy and convenient handling in the use thereof.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a rule of this character, which is sim- 20 ple in its construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in operation, durable, assuring a high degree of accuracy in measuring material and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the in- 25 vention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and 30 pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the rule constructed in accordance with the invention shown in position for measuring the number of boards of a 35 determined thickness to be had from a log on the cutting thereof in a saw mill.
Figure 2 is an end elevation.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary elevation partly in section of the rule.
40 Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates generally the rule constructed in accordance with the invention and B denotes diagrammatically a log or a piece of work to be cut into boards, the thicknesses of the boards to be out being indicated at 5, and such thicknesses discerned through the use of the rule allowing for the kerf of the saw blade or blades in the severing of the boards in the mill with the result that the boards when cut will have uniform thickness with respect to each other and such thick- 55 ness thereof determined from a reading of the scale upon the rule and also the number of boards obtainable from the log B.
The rule A comprises an elongated body 6 which may be made from wood or some molded composition material and provided with a plurality of measuring sides or faces 7, each being flat and extended longitudinally of the said body.
At one end of the body is formed a handle or grip 8 while at the other end of said body is a rotatable disk 9 journaled upon a pivot pin or 10 fastener 10, which is passed through a suitable clearance centrally in the disk 9 and anchored in the center or longitudinal axis of the body 6. This pin or fastener I0 is formed with an outer end head H while between it and the disk 9 is a coiled expansion spring 12, being disposed about the pin or fastener It and has a seating against washers 13, one resting against the head H and the other against the disk 9 so that the latter will be yieldably held in contacting relation to the body 8 and also such body may be rotated relative to the disk. The disk 9 is cut away to form a flat rest edge [4, which is in a plane flush with any one of the flat faces or walls 3 of the body, and allows the latter to be held in relation to a flattened end face of the log or other piece of work B in that the edge i l will make contact with this face and the disk 9 functions as a bearing for said body 6 without liability of any rolling activity of such body 6 when in working position for measuring and ruling purposes.
Each of the flat faces I has provided thereon scales, which involve graduations l5 in association with indicia l6 and ll, respectively, these being independent of each other and arranged in row formation, the indicia it being indicative of the thickness of a board or slab while the indicia [1 enables the determining of the number of boards of a predetermined thickness that may be cut from a piece such as the log B. The indicia l6 includes the size of the kerf to be cut by a saw of a mill so that on the cutting of the boards or slabs they will be of a uniform thickness elected by a scale appearing on the rule body 6 at the faces or walls 7 thereof.
In the use of the rule in advance of cutting boards from a log B, the thickness of the boards 5 to be cut therefrom can be determined in advance of the cutting of the same so that the cut boards in accordance with a selected scale on the rule will be of a determined thickness and also it may be discerned of the number of boards that may be cut from the log of a determined thickness before the cutting of such boards and in this Way avoiding waste resultant from the sawing of the log without measurements had as before stated.
The marks I 5 on the faces or walls I are usable for setting the saws of the mill for the cutting of boards of predetermined thickness from a log on the operation of the mill.
The showing made of this rule in the drawing is for use for a right hand saw and to adapt the invention for a left hand saw the characters on the rule are reversed.
What is claimed is:
A rule of the character described comprising a the same in contacting relation to the end next 10 thereto of said body.
