COLLAR STRA IGHTENING STRIP Flled Sept 9 1938 July 11, 1939.
Patented July 11, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a collar straightening strip.
The invention has for an object the construction of an article as mentioned which is adapted to be conveniently secured to the rear face of a point portion of a soft collar for holding the point portion straight.
More specifically, the invention contemplates characterizing the article by a fiat body adapted to be placed against the rear face of a point portion of a soft collar, and pins attached upon the front face of the body in a particular manner to efficiently and conveniently support the flat body in position.
More particularly, the invention contemplates extending the pins along portions of the front face of the fiat body in a manner so that they have their points slightly spaced from the face of the flat body and that the points are directed away from each other. When thus constructed it is possible to first engage one pin into a portion of the material of the soft collar, and to engage the other pin in a manner so that the flat body is held in position.
Still further the invention proposes to provide the collar straightening strips in pairs, one a right hand article for engaging one of the points of a collar, and the other a left hand article for engaging the other point of the collar.
Still further the invention contemplates the use of reinforcement elements extending along the flat body for reinforcing and stiffening the same.
Another object of the invention resides in an arrangement for releasably holding each of the pins so that they may be removed and replaced when desired, and furthermore be movable from the front face of the fiat body to the rear face to convert the article from a right hand article to a left hand article, and vice versa.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a soft collar equipped with collar straightening strips constructed according to this invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective View of a left collar straightening strip constructed according to this invention.
Fig. 4 is a perspective View of a right collar straightening strip constructed according to this invention. 5
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary enlarged vertical sectional View on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is an elevational view of one of the pins used in the device.
Fig. 7 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 'I--'I of Fig. 4.
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary perspective view of a collar straightening strip constructed according to a modification of this invention.
Fig. 9 is an enlarged elevational view of a portion of Fig. 8.
Fig. 10 is a horizontal sectional view on the line I0IIJ of Fig. 9.
In Fig. 1 a soft collar II) is illustrated having a left point I0 and a right point It Collar straightening strips, according to this invention, are secured to the rear faces of each of the point portions Ill and II as indicated in Fig. 1. I The collar ID is of standard construction and has a front portion II) and a band portion I0 It is on the rear face of the front portion I0 that the collar straightening strips are secured.
Each of the collar straightening strips is substantially of identical construction except for the fact that one is righ and one is left. The left strip (see Fig. 3) comprises a flat body I I adapted to be placed against the rear face of the point portion Ill of the soft collar I0. Fins I2 are attached upon the front face of the body II and extend along the face and have their 35 points slightly spaced from the face of the flat body I0, as clearly shown in Fig. 5. The space referred to is indicated in this figure by numeral l3. The points of the pins I2 are directed away from each other so that the flat body may first be moved in one direction to engage one pin into the material of the collar, and slightly moved in the other direction to engage the other pin in a manner so that both pins are engaged. The flat body II is of V-shape in elevation. It is formed with one of the arms I I slightly shorter than the arm I I The long arm I I is reinforced by a stiffening rib I4 embossed into the material thereof. This rib is pressed into the front face of the fiat body I0 and projects out from the rear face (see Fig. 7).
Because of the different lengths of the arms of the V-shaped body it is possible to use the collar straightening strip with collars having somewhat different lengths of pointed portions. 55
When the collar has shorter points the short arm of the V-shaped body is used along the points. For a longer point the long arm I l is used along the point. Of course, when there is a change from the long to the short arm it is necessary to turn around the flat body, and then the device which heretofore was considered a left device now must be used on the right point of the collar. In the same way the right device may be turned around and used in the left point of the collar.
In Fig. 4 a right device is illustrated. This device has a flat body ll of V-shape with the arm ll thereof towards the right, and the long arm I l thereof towards the left which is distinctly opposite to the location of the arms in the left device illustrated in Fig. 3. The long arm H is formed with a reinforcement rib l4. Pins l2 are attached on the front face of the body I I. These pins are arranged spaced from each other with their points directed away from each other.
Each of the pins E2 is attached to the front face of the fiat body in the following manner: Each pin I2 is formed at its base with an annular portion IZ An eyelet I6 is engaged through the annular portion 12 and through an opening I! formed in the material of the flat body. The eyelet has its flanges tightly pressed downwards firmly to hold the pin as required. This prevents the pin from turning. Because of the tapering of the pin from its base to its point there will be the space l3 previously referred to.
The collar straightening strip is attached to the point of the collar by merely placing the fiat body of the strip fiat against the rear face of the collar and then moving the collar straightening strip first in one direction to engage one of the pins l2.into the material of the collar, and'then slightly back in the other direction to engage the second pin. The engagement of both pins serves to hold the straightening strip in position. The straightening strip will serve to prevent the points of the collar from turnings up and give an untidy appearance.
In Figs. 8-10 inclusive a modification of the invention has been disclosed which distinguishes from the prior form in several respects. According to this form there is an opening Il formed beneath each of the pins I2. It is possible to press a small area of the material of the soft collar into the opening, from the outer face of the collar, to facilitate the easy engagement of the pin l2 into this material. Each of the openings ll is of bayonet form, that is, at one end there: is a large portion H and at the other end a reduced portion I'i In this reduced portion the eyelet l6 engages. This eyelet l6 holds the pin l2 in a manner similar to that previously described.
The distinction lies in the fact that normally the eyelet is disposed in the small end ll of the bayonet opening. It may be forced into the large end I! and then removed completely from the opening. The advantage of this construction resides in the fact that the pins may be changed and substituted whenever required, and moreover, may be placed into the opening to be disposed upon the front face or the back face of the flat body. A change of this character will change the collar straightening strip from a right to a left, or vice versa.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming Within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letter Patent is:
l. A collar straightening strip, comprising a flat body adapted to be placed against the rear face of the pointed portion of a collar, said flat body being formed with a bayonet slot at each end thereof, said bayonet slots having their enlarged ends directed away from each other, eyelets adapted to be passed through the enlarged ends of said slots and into the small end of said bayonet slots, and pins engageable into said collar and mounted on one end of said eyelets and having their points directed away from each other and superimposed upon the enlarged portion of said bayonet slots permitting a portion of said collar to be urged into the, enlarged end of said bayonet slots to facilitate its engagements upon said pins.
2. A collar straightening strip, comprising a flat body adapted to be placed against the rear face of the pointed portion of a collar, said flat body being formed with a bayonet slot at each end thereof, said bayonet slots having their enlarged ends directed away from each other, eyelets adapted to be passed through the enlarged ends of said slots and into the small end of said bayonet slots, and pins engageable into said collar and mounted on one end of said eyelets and having their points directed away from each other and superimposed upon the enlarged portion of said bayonet slots permitting a portion of said collar to be urged into the enlarged end of said bayonet slots to facilitate its engagements upon said pins, said eyelets being removable from said bayonet slots to permit them to be engaged therewith with said pins laying adjacent either face of said fiat body.
