Description

F. N. MARIANI ELECTRIC LAMP July 11, 1939.
Filed Feb. 26, 19 38 Wmmnmumwu fig-4. W
' INVENTOR ($2M, ATTORNEY Patented July 11, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ELECTRIC LAMP Frank N. Marlanl, New York, N. Y. Application February 26, 1938, Serial No. 192,751
Claims.
The invention relates to lamps generally and particularly is concerned with a table lamp and an object of the invention is realized in the provision of a novel and improved lamp wherein a 5 rotatable and exterior article supporting member is utilized to conveniently conceal a switch for controlling the table lamp. Other objects, advantages, and features of the invention will be better understood from the following detailed specification considered in connection with the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an electric lamp embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view, partly broken away, of the lamp shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view of the lamp, partly in elevation and partly in section, the sectional portion being taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3**---3 of Fig. 3 and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical section of the lamp base with rotatable cover or top.
Referring to the drawing for a more detailed description thereof, the numeral 1 indicates the lamp in its entirety as shown in Fig. 1. Said lamp comprises a stationary housing having a circular hollow base 8, the bottom of which is a spider 9 comprising a circular central plate Ill and radial arms I l integral with and extending therefrom and connected to the rim of the base.
The stationary base 8 has an annular rotatable table or top I 2 mounted on ball bearings l3 held in a raceway formed in the rim of the base, as shown in detail in Fig. 4, and said table or cover I2 has a central depressed annular shoulder or flange H The shade I5 is mounted on a lamp fitted into a socket l6 which is secured to a tubular standard I! to the lower end of which is threadably secured a dome shaped member l8, as shown in Fig. 3. The dome shaped member l8 rests on the annular flange I2 which constitutes a seat. A pair of internally threaded opposed studs or lugs l9 depend from the bottom face of the hemis- 5 pherical member I8 and these studs fit into opposed sockets 2! which rise from the central plate I0 of the spider 9 and screw means 23 pass through the plate. l0, part way through the sockets 2| and threadably engage the internally threaded lugs IE to secure the dome to the base.
A lug 25 also depends from the hemispherical member l8 and rests on the plate Ill. Opposed to the lug 25 is-a block 26 which also depends from the hemispherical member l8 and rests on the central plate Ill of the spider.
Block 26 constitutes a bearing having bore Mi rotatably guiding a rotary electric makeandbreak switch generally denoted 29. This type of switch is well known in the art and its structure is therefore not herein shown and described in detail. This rotary switch however includes a knurled wheel or pinion 30 which is continuously engaged by an annular or crown gear 3| depending from annular shoulder or flange IZ Thus by turning table l2, either clockwise or counter-clockwise, the annular gear 3| is rotated and consequently, pinion 30 is rotated to either make or break the lamp circuit characterized in part by wires in the cable 35 connected thereto. The cover l2, being mounted on ball bearings moves easily and thus the cover may be turned by pushing or pulling slightly on the article or pipe supporting ornamental parts 33 which are secured to the cover by screws 34, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The upper end portions of the ornamental parts do not touch the standard I 1.
While the invention has been described in detail and many modifications and specific applications thereof have been referred to, the invention herein is not limitedto such specific applications and it is intended that all matter shown in the accompanying drawing and particularly described in detail shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What is claimed is:
1. An electric lamp structure comprising a hollow base including a vertically arranged annular rim, an annular table rotatable relative to said rim and having an outer marginal portion disposed in superimposed relation to said rim, said table including an inner annular portion, a gear depending from said inner annular portion, a fixed closure for said table and seated on said inner annular portion, a depending support carried by said closure and disposed within said rim, a cable receiving vertical standard sustained by said closure, and a make and break switch carried by said depending support and having a rotatable member including gear means in mesh with said gear.
2. An electric lamp structure comprising a hollow-base including a vertically arranged annular rim, an annular table rotatable relative to said rim" and having an outer marginal portion disposed in superposed relation to said rim, said table including an inner annular depressed portion, a gear depending from said depressed portion, a fixed closure for said table and seated on said depressed portion, a. depending support carried by said closure and disposed within said inner annular depressed portion, a gear depending from said depressed portion, a closure for said table and seated on said depressed portion, a depending support carried by said closure and disposed within said rim, a cable receiving standard sustained by said closure, a make and break switch carried by said depending support and having a rotatable member including gear means in mesh with said gear, and adjustable means for fixedly holding said closure to said depressed portion.
4. An electric lamp structure comprising a hollow base including a vertically arranged annular rim, an annular table rotatable relative to said rim and having an outer marginal portion disposed in superimposed relation to said rim, said table including an inner annular depressed portion, a curved gear depending from said depressed portion, a closure for said table and having a marginal part seated on said depressed portion, a depending support carried by said closure and disposed within said rim, a cable receiving member extending above said base and secured to said closure, a make and break switch carried by said depending support and having a rotatable member including gear means in mesh with said gear, and means for holding said marginal part seated against said depressed portion.
5. An electric lamp structure comprising a hollow base including a vertically arranged annular rim, a substantially rectilinear annular table rotatable relative to said rim and having an outer marginal portion disposed in superimposed relation and in close proximity to said rim, said table including an inner annular depressed portion, an annular gear depending from said depressed portion, a dome shaped closure for said table and having an outer marginal part seated on said depressed portion, 9. depending support carried by said closure and disposed within said rim, a cable receiving hollow standard rising above said base and secured to said closure, a make and break switch carried by said depending support and having a rotatable member including gear means in mesh with said gear, lugs depending from said dome and extending within said base, sockets carried by said base for receiving said lugs, and adjustable means in part within said sockets and cooperating with said lugs to securely hold said marginal part against said depressed portion.
