JOHN PFITZENMEIER, OF SEALER TOWNSHIP, ALLEGHENY COUNTY, PA.
IMPROVEMENT IN MEASURII IG-FUNNELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,530, dated June 17, 1879 application filed April 11, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN PFITZENMEIER, of Shaler township, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Funnels; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawing, which forms part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in funnels; and it consists in making the funnelshaped portion of several parts or sections of increasing diameter, and placing one of a larger circumference on top of a flange extending from the upper edge of a smaller one in the form of a terrace. The under-most of these sections forms the unit of a measure, and the others, in connection with the former, are multiples of the same. There may be three or more of these measures connected and their contents determined according to convenience. At the bottom of the lowest of these sections is a stop-cock, to prevent the outflow of liquids before they are measured, as will be fully described hereinafter.
The accompanying drawing represents my invention.
A represents the funnel, and a b 0 sections of the same, bhaving a larger diameter than a, and c a larger one than I). The second section, I), is placed upon a flange, d, extending from the upper edge of a, and c on a similar flange on b.
The diameters of the sections increase in a ratio to double the capacity of one when com bined with another, so that if section a holds one pint, the two sections a and 0 hold one quart, and if the section 0 be added the three together measure two quarts. The capacity of the sections, however, may be varied and their number increased to suit convenience.
To the bottom of section a, surrounding the spout, are secured circular flanges e i, in which a stopcock, B, is held. The lower end of the stop-cock takes the place of the spout of a funnel, to emit any fluid and transfer it into another vessel.
This improved funnel is chiefly intended for the use of grocers and those who have frequently to measure small quantities of liquids and to transfer them to bottles or vessels with necks. The objectis to avoid the necessity of first measuring the liquids in a measure and afterward use a funnel.
I am aware that a funnel having a cock placed in its lower end is old, and this I disclaim.
I am also aware that a measure having oilsets or shoulders and increasing in size from the bottom to the top is not new, and this I also disclaim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- As a new article of manufacture, a funnel having the offsets or shoulders ,to indicate the various measures, and provided with the outer flange, c, to catch around the top of the stopcock, and the internal flange, "i, to fit down in the top of the cock, the parts being arranged and combined to operate,substantially as shown.
