3 Claims.
My invention relates to an improved paper dispensing package.
It has one particular use in connection with the dispensing of sheets of waxed paper and is here illustrated as embodied in a wax paper dispensing package.
This improved package is relatively simple and inexpensive. The paper to be dispensed is arranged in a fiat roll or bolt. Such bolt is carried within a Wrapper whereby thepaper is protected against soiling during the time it is contained within the wrapper and during the dispensing thereof. The wrapper is so constructed and associated with the bolt that paper may be readily unwound from the bolt and withdrawn from the wrapper and severed to produce a sheet of the desired length.
My improved package possesses the convenience of being flat and the container or carrier for the paper conforms to the reduced size of the roll or bolt of paper as the withdrawal and detachament of paper therefrom progresses. The carrier or wrapper is readily adaptable to rolls or bolts of paper which vary in size and the last sheet can be withdrawn and detached therefrom as readily as the first sheet.
An object is to provide a compact wrapper of neat appearance formed of such material and so constructed that the purpose of the invention will be attained at the minimum cost and maximum ease of manipulation for withdrawal and detachment of paper will be assured.

Inthe dispensing of waxed paper for use in the home one common practice is to arrange the paper in a stack of superimposed sheets within I a box or container from which sheets may be individually withdrawn for use. Another common practice is to provide the paper to be dispensed in a cylindrical roll from which it is unwound and severed against one edge of the box within which the roll is carried. This merchandise is highly competitive and it is desirable to reduce the cost as low as possible consistent with providing a dispensing package which will protect the paper throughout its retention in the roll and during the dispensing operation.
My invention includes the arrangement of the waxed paper in a flat roll or bolt. A web of paper I2 is wound upon itself as illustrated in Fig. 2 about a fiat core ill. I provide a container or carrier in the form of a wrapper comprising a unitary cover sheet creased to fold together along the line H. One portion l6 con,- stitutes the back cover and is provided with an end flap [8 adapted to fold thereover along the line 20. a
The other portion 24 constitutes the front cover and has flaps 26 which fold thereover into overlapping relationship. These flaps may be secured together throughout their overlapped portions. They are so folded over the portion 24 as to be spaced thereabove providing a guide way through which a length of the web of paper l2 may be withdrawn outwardly. The corners of thev flaps are cut away as at 30 forming a gripping aperture. One edge of this guideway along the end margin of the container is reinforced as by a cutting element 28 extending transversely thereacross and across the gripping aperture. .This cutting element may be of metal serrated on the edge or it might be of paper treated and hardened. The metal strip may be crimped over the margin of the paper wall as shown in Fig. '7 or it may be stitched in place as shown in Fig. 8 or secured in any other suitable manner.
The bolt of paper [2 is placed within this carrier as shown in Fig. 3 with an end thereof threaded through the guideway formed between the front cover 24 on one side and the flaps 26 and cutting element 28 on the other side. The
end flap l8 may be folded over the bolt l2 and the back cover I6 and front cover 24 may be then folded together enclosing the bolt 12 therebetween. In this shape the package exhibits its closed form.
When it is desired to withdraw a sheet of paper for severance from the bolt the front and back cover portions of the wrapper are outspread and the end flap unfolded as shown in Fig. 3. The bolt is now flipped over toward the flap l8 one or more times according to the length of sheet required. The web of paper may then be grasped by the thumb of the operator through the gripping aperture with the fingers of the same hand of the operator supporting the fla 24 from underneath.
In this manner the web may be withdrawn pulling'the bolt with it to the position shown in Fig. 4. In this position the bolt is shown as sliding over'flaps 26. This movement is continued until the web is withdrawn the required distance for the severance of the desired length of sheet. If more than one length of paper is desired for use the bolt may be unfolded and the drawingforward operation repeated before the sheet of paper is severed. The relative position of the v paper roll and the container during the operation of severing the sheet'is shown inFig. 5.
Fig. 6 illustrates a slightly modified form wherein the front cover 24 of the carrier may be made of cardboard or the like and the part which extends thereover toform the guideway is identified as 32 and is carried by flanges 25 on the portion 24. The cutting edge is indicated as 28 and it may be in the form of a metal strip.
Portions l6 and I8 here illustrated as integral parts of the sheet which includes portion 24 may be of cardboard or more flexiblepaper whichever is: desired. The disposition of the bolt within the carrier and the unwinding of paper therefrom and withdrawal and severance is carried out in the manner hereinabove set forth.
In. Figs. 7-10, inclusive, I-have illustrated a second modified formof construction wherein a front cover portion 24 is provided with a flap 29 having a reinforced cutting edge againstwhich paper withdrawn from the bolt may be severed.
As shown this cutting edge is formed by a strip .ofmetal12'l folded over the margin of the flap. This metal strip may be provided with teeth or the likeas illustrated.
Flap. 29 is normally folded underneath the front cover 24 as illustrated in Fig. 9. The front cover is provided with theside flaps 26 hereinabove described inconnection with the structure shown in Fig. 1. These side flaps are folded over and adhesively secured together. A strip of adhesive 23 is illustrated on one of them in the plane of the blank shown in Fig. 10. When paper is to be withdrawn from the bolt this flap 25 maybe unfolded as shown in Fig. 7. When the paper is to be severed this flap may be folded over as shown in Fig. 8 and the projecting length of paper severed against the cutting edge 2'1. The construction of the wrapper may be otherwise as hereinabove described. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 7-10, inclusive, I have illustrated the strip of paper which is rolled to form the bolt as being of a double thickness produced by a lengthwise fold therein. It is understood that the paper web may be dispensed as a single thickness as shown in Fig. 2 or as a 'double thickness as shown in Fig. 8. The Wrapper serves equally well in either case.
In order to reduce the size of the carrier the web of paper may be folded lengthwise along its median line and thus folded rolled up to form the bolts shown so that as paper is withdrawn for severance it is withdrawn as a fold of paper in two thicknesses and these two thicknesses severed at the one operation. This practice may be followed or the bolt may be wound as a single thickness of paper.
