Description

July 4, 1939. E, w COVER 2,164,987
CHIMNEY COWL Filed Aug. 17, 1938 Patented July 4, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
My inventio-n relates to chimney cowls and has as one of the principal objects thereof the provision of an improved device of this character which may be connected with or mounted on any chimney to effectively prevent back-draft through the chimney and thus eliminate smoke being blown into a building or the like.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of the above described character equipped with means for arresting sparks in a manner to prevent the latter from being blown onto the adjacent roo-f or the like and causing serious damage through fire.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which is simple in construction, durable in use, efficient in operation, and economical in manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, appended claims and annexed drawing.
Referring to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of my invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view, partly in section, thereof.
Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of the partition assembly.
In practicing my invention I provide an upwardly extending sleeve 5, the lower end of which is adapted to receive the upper end of a smoke pipe or the like (not shown). The upper end of the sleeve 5 is fashioned, subjacent the top thereof, with a substantially conical shaped circumferentially extending flange section 6 and positioned within the upper section of said sleeve 5 is a partition assembly 1. The partition assembly 'I comprises a pair of centrally connected and oppositely extending partitions, each of which are fashioned at the upper: ends thereof with laterally extending wings 8 resting upon the upper end of the sleeve 5 and flange 6.
A cylinder 9 of a larger diameter than said sleeve 5 is centrally disposed in relation thereto and comprises a lower substantially conical shaped perforated bottom I0 attached to and receiving the upper section of the sleeve 5. The upper end of the cylinder 9 is fashioned with an upwardly and inwardly circumferentially extending flange II to which is secured a horizontally extending screen I2 extending across the upper end of the cylinder whereby to break up air currents flowing therein and to arrest sparks within said cylinder. The Wings 8 integrally fashioned on the partition of the assembly 1 engage the inner face of said cylinder 9 and said assembly I has secured on the top thereof a disk I3, the circumferentially extending edge of which is spaced from the inner surface of the cylinder 9 as clearly illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing.
An arcuate shaped cover I4 is spaced above the top of the cylinder 9 and secured to said cylinder by means of arms I5.
In operation, wind or the like entering the top of the cylinder subjacent the cover I4 will be deflected into one or a pair of thepassages formed by the partition assemblyl I by means of the disk I3 thereby leaving the oppositely disposed passages between said partition open for conducting smoke and the like upwardly therethrough. The perforated bottom I0 of the cylinder also serves to effect an up-draft through said cylinder to coact with the up-draft in said sleeve 5 to carry smoke upwardly through the top of said cylinder.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that I have provided a chimney cowl which is simple in construction and efficient in operation for reducing to a minimum back-draft therethrough.
What I claim is:
' 1. A device of the character described, comprising, a sleeve adapted for mounting on a chimney, a cylinder of a larger diameter than said sleeve and fashioned with a perforated bottom receiving said sleeve and connected thereto, a pair of oppositely extending and centrally connected partitions arranged in said sleeve and extending therefrom, said partitions fashioned with wings engaging said cylinder, a baille disk mounted on said partitions and spaced from said cylinder, and spark arresting means extending across the top of said cylinder.
2. A device of the character described, comprising, a sleeve adapted for mounting on a chimney, a cylinder of a larger diameter than said sleeve and fashioned with a perfo-rated bottom receiving said sleeve and connected thereto, a pair of oppositely extending and centrally connected partitions arranged in said sleeve and eXtending therefrom, said partitions fashioned with wings engaging said cylinder, a baille disk mounted on said partitions and spaced from said cylinder, spark arresting means extending across the top of said cylinder, and a protective cover spaced above said cylinder and connected to the latter.
