The inner extremities of these screws are adapted to contact and cooperate with the cam surfaces L e-3d on the respective portions E l-25 of the pillar member, and these screws il- 32 which co-operate with each of the portions 26-25, are laterally spaced from each other and serve as a means for not only holding the pillar member in proper position with respect to the anchor embers or brackets 33-3 but also operate to swing the respective portions of the pillar member 23 about the respective pivots in a manner to be described.
In assembling the hinge, the pillar member 23 with the respective anchor members 33-3 are pivoted to the door member and the screws l iare set with respect to the cam faces 25-38, to position the pintle or pivot pin between the door member and the pillar member, so as to procure the desired swinging movement of the door member with respect to the pillar member.
The pillar member together with the laterally projecting portions 35-86 of the bracket or anchor members Sit-B l, are then inserted into the cut-away or recessed portion 3'! in the pillar [1, after which the bracket or anchor members 33-34 are secured to the face of the pillar ii in any suitable manner such as by means of screws 13.
Obviously the door member l9 may be secured to the door either before or after the pillar member has been placed in position with respect to the pillar.
When the door has been thus hung or positioned with respect to the door opening [6, the door member swinging about the pivot 22 will cause the door Hi to swing outwardly and will avoid striking any of the edges of the frame or pillar member, and will be limited in its outward or opening movement by reason of a portion of the door member striking the connecting portion 2&3 of the pillar member that is disposed between the portions 2 3-25. During the opening and closing movement of the door member it will swing between the bracket members 33- 3.
In setting or hanging the door, it is not always possible to do so accurately and therefore some adjustment is necessary. It is for the purpose of taking care of such adjustment that the screws ii-d2 which co-operate with the cam faces 252-33 of the portions z t-25 of the pillar members, are provided.
By referring to Figures 7, 8 and 9 of the drawings, it will be noted that there is a variation the space it between the edge of the door and the adjacent face of the pillar member or frame, when the door is in a closed position.
The size and configuration of this space when the door is closed, is the result of the amount of adjustment made when the door is being hung and after determining the amount of swing necessary to cause the door, in its opening and closing movements, to swing clear or free of the edges of the frame and door opening.
In Figure 7 it will be noted that there is a comparatively small space between the edge of the door and the frame, while in Figure 8 ther is shown a larger space. In Figure 9 it will be noted that this space is not uniform throughout the length of the door; as illustrated in this particular exemplification of the invention it will be noted that the space is narrower at the top than at the bottom.
This is necessary by reason of the conditions and in order to make the coor swing freely and properly after it is hung et.
The adjustment of the door is accomplished in the following manner.
While it is necessary in doors of this character to provide two or more hinges, in the present ex emplification only two of the hinges are shown and they are spaced from. other for a considerable distance, both being secured to the pillar member.
The adjustment is effected in each hinge in the same manner. Therefore, the description with respect to one hinge will apply equally as well to all of the hinges employed.
When the door is first hung, as is usual in hanging of all doors, the door is opened' and closed carefully with respect to the door opening to see if it will swing properly and will properly.
If it is desired to raise the door slightly, it is not necessary to disconnect any of the parts from either the pillar or the door member. The adjustment is effected through the medium of the screws M-AZ.
The adjustment will also be effected in the cletermined direction by swinging either the portion aforesaid 24 or 25 of the pillar member about their-respective pivots 394fl.
This adjustment can be clearly seen by referring to Figures 3, A and of the drawings.
If it is desired to swing the lower portion of the pillar member 23 about its pivot 41] to cause a greater opening to exist between the hinged edge of the door-and the frame,such
for instance as the opening shown in Figure 8, the right hand screw 52 is withdrawn from the position shown in Figure 5, while the left hand screw ii is advanced, to swing theportion 25 about the pivot and the extent of this swinging movement will be maintained by the end of the screw 4! being contacted with a portion of the cam surface 3% of the portion 25. The screw M is then adjusted so as to bind the parts in this position. During this adjustment of the portion 25 of the pillar member, and as. the portion 25, is held against adjustment, the connecting portion 2% will be twisted, to a slight extent to create a tension or torsion therein. This adjustment will also cause one end of the pintle to be adjusted with relation to the other end thereof.
As soon as the portion 25 has been properly adjusted, the operator then withdraws both of the screws ll- 12 which co-operate with the upper portion 2d of the pillar member. As soon as this portion 2Q is released, the tension or torsion which has been created in the portion 26, will cause the portion M to right itself with respect to the portion 25, thereby moving the pintle pin to a position to move the door to the desired extent, while at the same time the door member I9 will swing freely about the pivot or pintle pin 3'2.
In other words, the door will right itself to find its own axis, and the door member will not bind but will swing freely about the pivot or pintle pin.
This adjustment may be effected with both of the hinges, even though they may be spaced for a considerable distance apart.
It will therefore be manifest that the adjustment of the door may be readily obtained by the mere adjustment of the screws 1l-- l-2.
After the door has righted itself in a manner just described, the screws 4i-4Z which have been withdrawn to permit the movement of the portion 24 of the pillar member under the tension or torsion created in the connection portion 2%, will then be adjusted to hold the parts in. such position.
The screws ll-52 are of such a length that no matter what is the extent of the adjustment of the respective portions 24-25 about their pivots 39-G0, they will not project beyond the outer face of the bracket or anchor members.
By providing the undercut wall 38 of the recess: 3?, it will be manifest that the pivot or pintle pin 22 will be located in close proximity to the outer face of the pillar member and this will give a greater range of swinging movement of the door, and at the same time the entire construction, especially of the pillar member of the lingo, is such that only a comparatively shallow recess will be required for its installation.
While the preferred form of the invention has been herein shown and described, it is to be understood that various changes may be made in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of this. invention.
What is claimed as new is: 1. A hinge of the character described, embodying a door member and a pillar member, a pivot pin connecting the members for free swinging movementwith respect to each other, spaced bracket or anchor members between which the pillar member is disposed, means individual to the bracket members and pivotally connecting each adjacent-end of the pillar member thereto, and means individual to and disposed adjacent the ends of said pillar member for adjusting one end of the latter with respect to the other end, to deflect one end of said pivot pinv with respect to the other end of the pin.
2. A hinge of the character described, embodying a door member and a pillar member, a pivot pin connecting the members for free swinging movement with respect to each other, spaced bracket or anchor members between which the pillar member is disposed, means individual to the bracket members and pivotally connecting each adjacent end of the pillar member thereto, and means individual to and disposed adjacent the ends of said pillar member for adjusting one end of the latter with respect to the other end, to deflect one end of said pivot pin with respect to the other end of the pin, the last recited means operating to swing the respective ends of said pillar member about the respectivepoints of pivotal connection between the pillar I member and the respective brackets.
3. A hinge of the character described, embodying a door member and a pillar member, a pivot pin connecting the members for free swinging movement with respect to each other, spaced bracket or anchor members between which the pillar member is disposed, means individual to the bracket members and pivotally connecting each adjacent end of the pillar member thereto, and means individual to and disposed adjacent the ends of said pillar member for adjusting one end of the latter with respect to the other end, to deflect one end of said pivot pin with respect to the other end of the pin, a portion of said pillar member serving as a stop for limiting the movement of the door member in one direction about its pivot, said stop portion being correspondingly adjusted with the end of the pillar member.

A hinge of the character described embodying a door member and a pillar member, a pivot pin connecting them together for free relative swinging movement, means anchoring the pillar member to a pillar, means other than said anchoring means for adjusting a portion of said pillar member with respect to another portion thereof for setting or hanging the door, while said another portion of the pillar member is maintained against adjustment, and means for releasing said other portion of the pillar member, whereby the pillar member and door will find their own ver tical axes, and the door member will swing freely about its axis.
5. A hinge of the character described embodying a door member and a pillar member, a pivot pin connecting them together for free relative swinging movement, means anchoring the pillar member to a pillar, means other than said anchor ing means for adjusting a portion of said pillar member with respect to another portion thereof for setting or hanging the door, while said another portion of the pillar member is maintained against adjustment, and means for releasing said other portion of the pillar member, whereby the pillar member and door will findtheirown vertical axes, and the door member will swing freely about its axis, the second recited means operating to create a torsion in said pillar member, to cause the latter to right itself when the portion thereof which was initially maintained against adjustment is released.

A hinge of the character described embodying a member secured to a door, and a pillar member, a pin pivot-ally connecting said members together, means anchoring the pillar member to a pillar and means other than said anchoring means for varying the angle of the axis of said pin to cause the door member to find its own axis to properly position the door with respect to the door opening while a free swinging movement of the door member about its pivot is maintained.

A hinge of the character described embodying a door member, a pillar member, means pivotally connecting the members together, said pillar member embodying spaced bearing portions in which the said means is journaled, and a flexible connecting portion, spaced bracket members adapted to be anchored to the pillar of a door opening, pivotal connections between the said bracket members and the respective adjacent bearing portions oi the pillar member, means individual to said bearing portions for maintaining them against adjustment about their points of pivotal connection with the respective bracket members, the last said means also independently operable to swing the respective bearing portions about the respective last said pivotal connections, to vary the positon of the axis of the pivot be tween said members with respect to said pillar member.
8. A hinge of the character described embodying a door member, a pillar member, means pivotally connecting the members together, said pillar member embodying spaced bearing portions in which the said means is journaled, and a flexible connecting portion, spaced bracket members adapted to be anchored to the pillar of a door opening, pivotal connections between the said bracket members and the respective adjacent bearing portions of the pillar member, means individual to said bearing portions for maintaining them against adjustment about their points of pivotal connection with the respective bracket members, the last said means also independently operable to swing the respective bearing portions about the respective last said pivotal connections, to vary the position or" the axis of the pivot between said members with respect to said pillar member, the said flexible connecting portion having a torsion created therein when the said bearing portions are relatively adjusted, the said torsion operating to right said bearing portions with respect to each other.

A hinge of the character described embodying a door member, a pillar member, means pivotally connecting the members together, said pillar member embodying spaced bearing portions in which the said means is journaled, and a flexible connecting portion, spaced bracket members adapted to be anchored to the pillar of a door opening, pivotal connections between the said bracket members and the respective adjacent bearing portions or" the pillar member, means individual to said bearing portions for maintaining them against adjustment about their points of pivotal connection with the respective bracket members, the last said means also independently operable to swing the respective bearing portions about the respective last said pivotal connections, to vary the position of the axis or" the pivot between said members with respect to said pillar member, the said means embodying rotatably adjustable members engaging portions of said bearing portions, the axes of said rotatable members operating in planes intersecting the axis of the pivotal connections between said bearing portions and said bracket members.

A hinge of the character described embodying a door member, a pillar member, means pivotally connecting the members together, said pillar member embodying spaced bearing portions in which the said means is journaled, and a flexible connecting portion, spaced bracket members adapted to be anchored to the pillar of a door opening, pivotal connections between the said bracket members and the respective adjacent bearing portions of the pillar member, means individual to said bearing portions for maintaining them against adjustment about their points of pivotal connection with the respective bracket members, the last said means also independently operable to swing the respective bearing portions about the respective last said pivotal connections, to vary the position of the axis of the pivot between said members with respect to said pillar member, the said bearing portions being provided with cam surfaces, and the last said means embodying screws engaging and operating upon said cam surfaces.

A hinge oi the character described embodying a door member, a pillar member, means pivotally connecting the members together, said pillar member embodying spaced bearing portions in which the said means is journaled, and a flexible connecting portion, spaced bracket members adapted to be anchored to the pillar of a door opening, pivotal connections between the said bracket members and the respective adjacent bearing portions of the pillar member, means individual to said bearing portions for maintaining them against adjustment about their points of pivotal connection with the respective bracket members, the last said means also independently operable to swing the respective bearing portions about the respective last said pivotal connections, to vary the position of the axis of the pivot between said members with respect to said pillar member, the said pillar member being recessed into the pillar, and the outermost upright wall of the recess being undercut, the said pivotal means between said members being disposed adjacent said undercut portion, whereby the pivot will be disposed in close proximity to the outer face of the pillar of the door opening.

A hinge oi the character described embodying a door member, a pillar member, means pivotally connecting the members together, said pillar member embodying spaced bearing portions in which the said means is journaled, and a flexible connecting portion, spaced bracket members adapted to be anchored to the pillar of a door opening, pivotal connections between the said bracket members and the respective adjacent bcaring portions of the pillar member, means individual to said bearing portions for maintaining them against adjustment about their points of pivotal connection with the respective bracket members, the last said means also independently operable to swing the respective bearing portions about the respective last said pivotal connections, to vary the position of the axis of the pivot between said members with espect to said pillar member, the said flexible connecting portion having a torsion created therein when the said bearing portions are relatively adjusted, the said torsion operating to right said bearing portions with respect to each other, the said connecting portion between the said bearing portions also serving as a stop for the movement of said door member about its pivot in one direction.

A hinge of the character described embodying a door member and a pillar member, a pivot pin connecting them together for free relative swinging movement, and means for adjusting a portion of the pillar member with respect to another portion thereof for setting or hanging the door, while said other portion of the pillar member is maintained against adjustment, the said means embodying a pair of screws the axes of which are transverse to the axis of said pivot, said screws being selectively operable to adjust said pillar member and to permit such adjustment.
14. A hinge of the character described embodying a door member and a pillar member, a pivot pin connecting them together for free relative swinging movement, and means for adjusting a portion of the pillar member with respect to another portion thereof for setting or hanging the door, while said other portion of the pillar member is maintained against adjustment, the said means embodying a pair of screws operable upon said pillar member to move it in opposite directions, either of said screws being operable as an adjusting screw when the other is operable to serve as an adjustment limiting screw.
15. A concealed hinge of the character described embodying a door member, a pillar member, means forming a pivotal connection between said members, means pivotally connecting said pillar member to a pillar of a door opening, and adjusting means carried by a stationary support, said pillar member having a contact surface adjacent to the said support for the said adjusting means, said surface being remote from and transverse to the axis of the second. recited pivotal means, said adjusting means engaging such surface for moving the pillar member about the last recited pivotal means.
