Palmer B. McConnell, Appleton, Wis., assignor to Marathon Paper Mills Company, Rothschild,
Wis., a corporation of Wisconsin Application November 26. 1937, Serial No. 176,591
2 Claims. (Cl. (i5- 53) This invention relatesy to coasters adapted to be afhxed by pressing same to the foot portion of goblets, glasses, bottles, and similar drinking receptacles to prevent liquid overflow or moisture condensate thereon from soiling linen, table tops or the hands and clothing of the person using such receptacles.
Low cost of manufacture, simplicity oi construction, and efllciency in performing the intended protecting function are among the objects and advantages of the invention.
By this invention a satisfactory protecting de- Ivice of sheet material is provided at such low cost 'that it may readily be sold, like an ordinary paper napkin, for being used a single time and then discarded.
One of the principal objects of the present invention is to provide an absorbent coaster of extreme simplicity, and one that remains attached to the glass as long as desired, and from which it can be removed and reapplied to the same or other glass.
The coaster is easily and quickly applied tothe foot of the glass and provides abase for the glass of considerably larger area. The glass is thus less liable to upset or be tilted and if a small amount of its contents should drip over they will be taken up by the absorbent coaster. Owing to the fact that long stemmed glassesl are liable to tip over easily considerable breakage is also prevented.
Other objects, advantages and features of the .invention will hereinafter -be described.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, which l illustrates a preferred embodiment of the inven tion,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the coaster applied to the base portion of a goblet,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmental sectional view taken on line '2-2 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is an enlarged iragmental sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a plan view of the coaster showing the cover strip in partially peeled condition,
Figure 5 is an enlarged sectional view taken on lines 5-5 of Flgure4,
Figure 6 is a fragmental cress sectional view of a modied form oi the invention.
Referring to the drawing, the coaster comprises a disc-like base III of paper having any suitable contour provided with a coated area l I of a sultable pressure sensitive adhesive.
'I'he area coated with adhesive may be of any suitable contour. For example, it may be circular in shape as illustrated in Figure 4. A peelable cover strip I2 is applied to the adhesive coated area preferably having a corresponding ment papeigCellophane and the like and is read# ily peelable from the adhesive coating Il.
Slits`l and I6 are provided in the base sheet as' shown in Figure 4 adjacent the adhesive coated area 4 so as to provide a yieldable portion in the base I0 between the said slits.
In using ythe coaster, the cover strip I2 is peeled off and the adhesive area I4 issimply pressed by the ilngers against the base 6 of the goblet as shown in Figures 1 and 2. The slits I5 and i6 provide a yieldable portion in base I0 thereby permitting the adhesive area I4 to be ypressed against the concave faceof the goblet base 6 so y as to bring the adhesive area I0 into full contact with the base.
I prefer to use a base made of highly absorbent soft paper such as ordinary paper napkin stock, several layers being joined together for this purpose so as to ensure absorption of any. liquids which may drip thereon. If desired, the upper layer may be more absorbent than the layers therebeneath. The base sheet may be printed or ornamented in any suitable manner on either one or both sides. The base sheet may also be made oi cloth, thin veneer, Cellophane, metal foils, Bakelite or other available thin sheet materials. The advantage in using paper-coasters is that they can be thrown'away after being used once. However, if more expensive base materials are used the coasters can be readily vremoved from the receptacles and reaiiixed by simply pressing same to the same or other glasses or receptacles.
adhesive composition may be used for coating an area of the base sheet of paper or other material.vv
Any suitable pressure sensitive normally tacky I prefer to use a hot melt composition such as disclosed in application Serial No. 98,978. Such composition is thermoplastic and consists essentially of an adhesive agent, a cohesive agent, a mod ier and a common .thermoplastic non-volaI tile solvent for these agents.
The following composition, for example, is suitable for coating paper:
Per cent by weight Rubber' 15 Vistanex (isobutylene polymer) Y.v. 15 Amorphous parailin wax (M. P. 155 F.) 19 Methyl abietate 25 Ester gum- 25 Glycerine 0.5 Hydroquinone 0.5
Instead of applying the pressure sensitive ad-l hesive directly to the base sheet I may provide thin paper 20 coated on bothfaces with pressure sensitive adhesive as shown in Figure 6 and cut therefrom portions of suitable area and contour. aud press one face Il of same against the base sheet I0 so as to retain same onthe base sheet thereby providing an exposed pressure sensitive adhesive area I4 .on the other face for aiiixing the coaster to a glass or other container. I may alsovprovide a sheet coated with water soluble glue on onevface and pressure sensitive adhesive on the other face. Discs or other suitably shaped portions are cut out from this paper which are aflixed to the base sheet I0 by moistening the glue coated face and amxing same to the base sheet thereby providing an exposed pressure sensitive area on the base. sheet. e
In accordance with the invention I provide a coaster which is'attachable to a glass or the like by simply pressing same into place. It can be readily removed from the glass by merely peeling it oif and it will not foul the surface o! the glass or other receptacle to which it may be attached without fouling, marring or leaving a residue o! the adhesive.
It is obvious that numerous changes and moditlcations may be made in the details of the invention which are intended tobe included in the appended claims. y
I claim: 1
1. A removable and reusable coaster for drinking glasses and the like, comprising a base sheet of absorbent paper having an area thereof coated with a pressure sensitive normally tacky adhesive for removably afllxing the coaster to a glass andthe like and apeelable cover strip protecting said adhesive coating area.
2. A removable and reusable coaster for drinking glasses and the like, comprising a base sheet of absorbent paper, -spaced slits in said base sheet forming a yieldable portion in said base sheet, a coating of pressure sensitive normally tacky adhesive provided in said yieldable portion for removably amxing the coaster to a glass and the like.
