45 and 52, and the trouser 48 will provide partial support for the boot I5`as well as provide a closed connection between the'two at this point.

Referring to Fig. l1 I- show my invention as applied to a puttee in which the elements numbered I8 to 26, 21, 28, 3| and 44 to 41 are substantially identical with the corresponding portions of the other figures. The puttee is shown at 55 and has a top edge 56'and bottom edge 51, and a locking pin 26a is employed for separable engagement with the slider 28.

In Figs. 9 and 10 I show a boot substantially similar to Figs. l, 2, and 4, in which the slitted back opening is protected by a waterproof tongue 58 which has double folded portions 59 and edges 60 which are stitched at 6l to the4 meeting edge portions 23 of the boot.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into eiect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth. but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v

l. A boot or like article having a foot portion, an ankle portion, and a calf portion, said ankle and calf portions being slitted at the back forming meeting edge portions, and adjustable means to retain said meeting edges together, said means including slide type fasteners secured adjacent said meeting edges interiorly of said article, the slider of said fastener being located entirely Within the article, and means for operating said slider disposed on the inside of the fasteners.

2. Avboot or like article having a foot portion, an ankle portion, and a calf portion, said ankle and calf portions being slitted at the back forming meeting edge portions, and adjustable means to retain said meeting edges together, said means including a'stringer of slide type fasteners secured to and along each of said meeting edge portions in substantial spaced relation to said meeting edge, said meeting edges being adapted to cover said fasteners and the slider when said fastener has been actuated to the closed position, said slider being operable only from the inside of the meeting edges and inwardly ofthe fasteners.

3. A boot or like article having a foot portion, an ankle portion, and a.calf portion, said ankle and calf portionsbeing slitted at the back forming meeting edge portions, and adjustable means to retain said meeting edges together in abutting relation, said means including slide type fasteners Athereto and interiorly of said article, and an actuating slider engaging the fasteners of the fastener strips and' disposed on the inside of the latter and adapted to be actuated only from within the article.

5. A boot or the like having an ankle portion and a calf portion formed to fit the wearer, said ankle and calf portions being closed except at the back portion where it is slitted to form meeting edge portions, a stringer of hookless fasteners secured along the inner face of each edge portion, and an actuating slider on the inner faces of the fasteners to draw said meeting edge portions together in abutting relation, said actuating slider being provided with an operating device on its inner face and operable wholly within the article and being free of all projections outwardly of the article or rbetween said edge portions.

6. As a new article of manufacture, a boot or like article having an ankle portion and a calf portion all made to conform to the outlines of the wearer, said ankle and calf portions being slitted longitudinally to form meeting edge portions, stringers of fasteners secured at the inside of the article along said meeting edge portions, and a slider engaged with said fasteners and having operating means on the inner face thereof and projectingsolely inwardly thereof to move 'and retain said meeting edges together with an uninterrupted and unobstructed smooth exterior surface free of parts between said edges and outwardly thereof.

'1. A boot or like article having an ankle portion and a calf portion formed to snugly fit the wearer, said portions being slitted at the back from the top of the calf portion to the bottom of the ankle portion and forming meeting edges, stringers secured along the inner faces of said portions adjacent the edges and having coacting separable fasteners, a slider engaged with the fasteners and movable along thefsame to draw said edges together into contacter to separate the same, said slider having means on its inner face through which it may be actuated, said slider being positioned entirely within the article and the edge portions of the boot being free of portions interposed between said edges and said stringers, and a tongue over the fasteners from the top to the bottom of the slit and having its opposite edges secured beyond the stringers to.
