7 Claims.
This invention relates to skiving machines and is herein illustrated as embodied in a machine of the Amazeen type for skiving the margins of pieces of leather.
Machines of this type comprise a feed roll and a cooperating feed disk which presses the work yieldingly against the roll and is rotated to aid in feeding the work. The pressure exerted upon the work should be varied at times, and the present invention provides a novel means whereby this pressure may be varied by the operator during the operation of the machine. In the illustrated construction one end of a rigid bar extends over the top of the feed disk shaft and carries a yielding member which engages a ball or similar anti-friction member mounted in a socket at the top of the shaft, a thumbscrew being provided turning which varies the pressure which the yielding memberexerts upon the shaft 20 and thereby the pressure exerted by the feed disk upon the work.
; This and other features of the invention, ineluding certain details of construction and combinations of parts, will be described as embodied in'an illustrated machine and pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing, The figure is a view partly in front elevation and partly in section of a portion of a skiving machine in which the present invention is embodied.
I The machine is or may be in large part substantially the same as the machine disclosed in United States Letters Patent No. 1,866,918, granted July 12,1932, upon an application filed in the name of Milton H. Ballard, and only such parts of that machine as are necessary to an understanding of the invention have been illustrated. The machine comprises, among other elements, a feed-roll which is rotated. about a horizontal axis, a rotary disk knife, not shown, and a feed disk 3'fast to the lower end of an upright shaft 5 which is rotatably and slidably mounted in spaced bearings 1 formed in a casting 9. The casting has a horizontal stem II which extends through a bore in the upper end of a bracket I3 and may be adjusted horizontally and held in adjusted position by a clamping member |5 and a screw l1, the clamping member engaging a slender rod l9 which is driven into the casting 9 as Well'asthe stem I I. Mounted for sliding adjustment on the right-hand end of the stem II is the hub of a bracket 2| which, as will be explained, is of a construction somewhat diiferent from that of the patented machine, said bracket carrying two idler pulleys 23 over which and around a pulley 25, which is rigid with the feed disk shaft 5, passes a round belt 21. From the idler pulleys 23 this belt passes down and around a driving pulley, not shown, which is carried by the feed roll shaft, also not shown. In order to vary the tension of the belt a set screw 29 is loosened and the bracket 2| is adjusted along the stem I As thus far described, with the exception of the shape of the bracket 2|, the particular means for clamping the stem II of the casting 9 in position, and the particular means for holding the bracket 2| inposition on the stem the machine may be the same as that of the patent, and no further detailed description of its construction or mode of operation will be given. It will be understood, however, that the work is pressed against the feed roll by the feed disk and fed away from the observer.
The feed disk shaft has fastened to its upper end by a set screw 30 a hollow member 32, which forms essentially the upper end of the feed disk shaft and has an enlarged lower end which, when there is no work in the machine, rests upon the upper bearing 7. is a socket to receive an anti-friction member such as a ball 3| with which a yielding member 33 is at all times in engagement, said yielding member comprising a sleeve having integral with or rigidly fastened to its lower end a disk 34. The sleeve is vertically slidable in a generally cylindrical hollow block 35 having an enlarged lower end, the portion of reduced diameter of the block being driven tightly into a bore in a rigid supporting member in the form of a bar 31. Threaded through the top of the hollow block 35 is a thumb screw 39 which bears with its lower end against the top of a compression spring 41 the lower end of which rests upon the bottom of the sleeve 33. A check nut 43 holds the thumb screw 39 in adjusted position. With the construction thus far described it will be evident that the tension of the spring 4|, and hence the pressure of the feed disk upon the work, may be varied during the operation of the machine by turning the thumb screw 39.
The bracket 2|, as has been explained, is of a different construction from the corresponding bracket of the patented machine. It comprises two oppositely extending branches the ends of which curve upward and terminate in fiat surfaces upon which the right-hand portion of the bar 31 rests. The upwardly curved ends of the branches of the bracket 2| have firmly screwed into them the lower ends of threaded studs 45 In the top of the member 32 Y which pass up through holes formed in the bottoms of recesses in the bar 31. Nuts 47, threaded on the studs, hold the bar 31 firmly in place with its left-hand end overhanging the feed disk shaft 5. If now it is desired to adjust the bracket 21 to the right or the left by loosening the screw 29 and sliding the bracket along the stem II, this may be done without affecting the operativeness of the yielding member 33 since the disk 34 of that member is of sufficient extent so that adjustments of the bracket 2| may be made without causing the disk to cease to engage the ball 3|.
It is sometimes desired to have a guard for the belt 21, and accordingly such a guard 49 is provided. The upper fiat wall of this guard is provided at its left-hand end with a large hole 5!, near its middle with a keyhole slot 53, and at its rear end with an open-ended slot 55. The flat upper wall of this guard rests upon the top of the bar 31 and is held in place by two thumb nuts 51, 59 which are threaded upon the studs 45. If it is desired to remove the guard, the nuts 51, 59 are loosened and the guard is slid to the left until the circular portion of the keyhole slot 53 is directly below the nut 51, at which time the right-hand end of the guard has been moved out from beneath the nut 59. The guard may then be lifted from the machine.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A skiving machine having, in combination, a feed roll, means for rotating said roll, a cooperating feed disk, a shaft to which the feed disk is fastened, means for rotating the feed disk shaft, said shaft being rotatable and slidable, a support extending over one end of the shaft, a yielding member carried by the support for exerting pressure upon the shaft, and means capable of being manipulated during the operation of the machine for varying the pressure exerted by the yielding member.
2. A skiving machine having, in combination, a feed roll, a cooperating feed disk, a shaft to which the feed disk is fastened, said shaft being rotatable and slidable, a support extending over one end of the shaft, said support and said shaft being relatively adjustable transversely of the axis of the shaft, a yielding member carried by the support for exerting pressure upon the shaft, and means capable of being manipulated during the operation of the machine for varying the pressure exerted by the yielding member, said yielding member being operative in different relative positions of the shaft and the support.
3. A skiving machine having, in combination, a feed roll, a cooperating feed disk, a shaft by which the disk is carried, said shaft being rotatable and slidable, a support extending over one end of the shaft, said support and said shaft being relatively adjustable transversely of the axis of the shaft,
an anti-friction member carried by the shaft, and a yielding member carried by the support and in engagement with the anti-friction member, said yielding member having an operative face of considerable area to permit said relative adjustment.
4. A skiving machine having, in combination, a feed roll, a cooperating feed disk, a shaft by which the disk is carried, said shaft being rotatable and slidable, a support extending over one end of the shaft, said support and said shaft being relatively adjustable transversely of the axis of the shaft, an anti-friction member carried by the shaft, a yielding member carried by the support and in engagement with the anti-friction member, said yielding member having an operative face of considerable area to permit said relative adjustment, and means capable of being manipulated during the operation of the machine for varying the pressure exerted by the yielding means.
5. A skiving' machine having, in combination, a feed roll rotatable about a substantially horizontal axis, a cooperating feed disk, a substantially vertical feed disk shaft mounted for rotative and for sliding movement, a pulley fast to the shaft, a bracket, an idler pulley carried thereby, a belt passing around the pulley on the feed disk shaft and the idler pulley, the bracket being adjustable toward and from the axis of the shaft to regulate the tension of the belt, and means also carried by the idler pulley bracket and including a spring and a manually operable member acting upon the spring to vary its tension, said means being effective in various adjusted positions of the idler pulley bracket.
6. A skiving machine having, in combination, a feed roll, a cooperating feed disk, a shaft to which the feed disk is fastened, a casting in which said shaft is mounted for rotative and sliding movement, said casting being adjustable in a path parallel to the axis of the feed roll, an antifriction member carried by the feed disk shaft, and a yielding member having a face in engagement with the anti-friction member, said face being of considerable extent so as to permit adjustment of the casting while maintaining said engagement.
7. A skiving machine having, in combination, a feed roll, a cooperating feed disk, a shaft to which the feed disk is fastened, a casting in which said shaft is mounted for rotative and sliding movement, said casting being adjustable in a path parallel to the axis of the feed roll, an antifriction member carried by the feeddisk shaft, a yielding member having a face in engagement with the antifriction member, said face being of con siderable extent so as to permit adjustment of the casting while maintaining said engagement, and means capable of being manipulated during the operation of the machine for varying the pressure exerted by the yielding member.
