When d5 loading, the initial pull of the drag line pulls the cables 32 forwardly and rocks the lever arms 22 of the lid rearwardly toward the rear wall of the bucket and thereby elevates the lid l1 and holds the same elevated and during further pull the drag chains 36 are tensioned to pull the bucket forward through the material to be loaded.
After loading when the drag line is held slightly taut and simultaneously the hoist cable is pulled, the cables 24 are pulled rarwardly and rock the lever arms 22 of the lid forwardly to close the lid and hold the lid held tightly closed to retain a full load while the bucket is being elevated. It will be observed by referring to Figure 1 that the full bucket may assume an angular position of 45 or more without spilling any of the contents.
A trip chain 39 is secured to the upper ends of ,the lever arms 2|, as best shown in Figure 3, and
is secured to an eye 40 at thelower end of the beforementioned link M to which same eye the beforementioned hoist chains 7 [3 are secured. When the bucket I0 is over the desired place upon which the load is to be discharged, the operator slacks off the drag line 30 whereupon the front end of the bucket will dip downward while the trip chain 39becomes taut and moves the lever arms 22 to swing the lidto full open position and hold the lid in this position while the load is being dumped and until the bucket has been lowered to the ground to again be filled.
I From the above description it is thought that the construction and operation of the invention will be fully understood without further explanation;
What is claimed is: g
1. The combination with a drag line bucket havingan open front end, of a hoe-like lid closing the frontend (of the bucket and having a shank pivotally connected to the bucket substantially midway between the front end and the rear end of the bucket, a lever extending upwardly from the shank for rocking the lid to open and to closed position, a drag line connected to the front of the bucket, a lifting cable connected'to the rear of the bucket, a trip cable connected with the dragline and having a slip connection with the lifting cable, a bracket arm carried by and extending above the front end of the bucket, a direction changing sheave carried by the upper end 7 of the bracket arm,'a direction changing sheave carried by the bucket near the rear end thereof, said trip cable being trained over the first named sheave and terminally connected to the lever for rocking the lever to close the lid when the hoist cable is tensioned, a second cable connected to the drag line and trained over the sheave at the rear end of the bucket and terminally connected to the lever intermediate the ends thereof for rocking the lever to hold open the lid when the drag line is tensioned and. the hoist cable is slacked, and a trip chain connected to the hoist cable and to said lever and adapted to be tensioned to pull open said lid when the drag line'is slacked and the hoist cable is held tensioned to permit dumping of the bucket.

means pivotally connecting the end of the shank i to the top of the bucket-substantially midway between the ends of the bucket, a lever connected to said shankand extending obliquely upward above the bucket, a drag line connected to the frontend of the bucket, alifting cable connected to the rear end of the bucket, a trip cable connected with the dragline and having a slip connection with the lifting cable, an upwardlyextending arched bracket arm connected to the sides of the bucket at the front end of the bucket, a sheave mounted on the arm atlthe top thereof and disposed at substantially the height of the top of said lever, a second 'sheavejmounted on the bucket nearthe rear end of thefbuc ket, said trip cable being trained over the sheave carried by the bracket arm and being terminally connected to the top of the lever for closing the lid when the hoist cable is tensioned, a second cableconnected to the drag line and trained over said sheave at the rear end of the bucket andbeing terminally connected to said lever intermediate the ends thereof for rocking the lever to hold open the lid when the drag line is tensioned and the hoist cable is slacked, and a trip chain connected to the hoist cable and to saidlever-and adapted to be tensioned andpull open said lid when the .drag line is slacked and thehoist cable is held tensioned to dump the bucket. 7
