ATTO KN V- Patented May 2, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE assgnor to Universelle Cigarettenmaschinen-Fabrik J. G. Mueller & Co., Dresden, Germany Application June 13, 1936, Serial No. 85,138 In Germany June 15, 1935 11 Claims.
This invention relates to cigar making machines, and more particularly to that portion of the cigar making machine wherein the wrapper is placed about the filler.
An object of this invention is to provide a means Which may be combined with a cigar making machine by which the wrapper is adhesively secured to the filler and held in contact with the filler a sufficient length of time for the adhesive 'to take hold.
Another object of this invention is to provide means for receiving the wrapped cigar from the cigar making machine while at the same time `holding the tip of the cigar in a manner to prevent loosening of the wrapper, the holding means subsequently delivering the cigar to a conveyor by means of which the finished cigar may be transferred to the desired point for packing or the like.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device of this kind which is so constructed that the capacity of the cigar making machine is not affected thereby, and at the same time the tip of the cigar is given the desired treatment to insure the maintenance of the wrapper about the `filler.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention will be more fully described hereinafter, and will be more particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto.
In the drawings, wherein like symbols refer to like or corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a detail end elevation of a device constructed according to an embodiment of this .invention, showing the device in the act of receiving a cigar from the cigar making machine, with which this device is associated.
Figure 2 is a vertical section, partly in detail, taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Fig. l, but showing the device in the act of delivering a finished cigar to a carry-off conveyor.
Figure 4 is a detail end elevation, partly in section, of the holding means for the cigar, showing the manner in which the holding means for the cigar is opened to receive the cigar.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral I designates a drum or rotatable member mounted on a shaft 3 carried by a pair of arms 4. The drum I is provided on the periphery thereof with a plurality of longitudinally extending and circumferentially spaced apart grooves or channels 2, which in the present instance are angular in transverse section. The arms or levers 4 are connected together by means of a cross bar. 5, and
(Cl. ISI- 39) the lower ends of the arms or levers 4 are pivotally mounted on a shaft 6 carried by a bearing 1.
The cigars are maintained within the grooves 2 by means of clamping members 8 carried by rock levers 9 which are mounted on shafts Ill carried by the drum The clamping member 8 is constructed in the form of a relatively long plate which is shaped transversely similar to the outer surface of the cigar. A spring I I disposed about the shaft IU constantly urges the lever 9 with the plate or holding member 8 to operative position. As shown in Fig. 3 each lever is pro vided with a stop lug 9 which limits the inward movement of the lever 9 with respect to the ad.- jacent groove 2.
When the cigars are placed into a groove 2, a cup-shaped member I2 is moved to a position where the tip of the cigar is received on the inside thereof. This cup I2` is mounted on an arm I3 which is fastened to a slidable rod |4by means of nuts I5-or like fastening devices. The rod I4 is slidable in a passage IIi` provided in the drum and this rod I4-is held against rotation by means of a pin I'IA which is secured thereto and which engages in a slot' I8 in the drum I. The length of the slot I8 determines the movement of the rod I4. A spring I4 engages about the rod I4 and constantly urges the cup member I2 to an inoperative position, as shown in Fig. 2.
The cigars are receivedfrom the cigar making machine one at a time in a rockable receiving and delivering member 26 which ismounted on a shaft 21 carried by an arm 28-which is fastened to the frame ofthe machine. The rock member 23 is provided with a channel 25 in the upper end thereof which is V-shaped, and this rock member is swung from a vertical receiving position, as shown in Fig. 3, to a substantially hori- Zontal delivering position, as shown in Fig. 1 by means of a segmental toothed rack 39 carried by a rock lever 3|. The lever 3| is pivoted on a pivot 32, and the teeth of the rack 30 engage the teeth of a gear 29 which is mounted on the shaft 2l. The lever 3| is provided intermediate the ends thereof with a roller 33 which engages in a cam groove 35 in a cam member 34. 'I'his cam member 34 is mounted on a drive shaft 24 connected to a suitable source of power supply.
When the combined receiving and delivering member 26 is rocked downwardly to a delivering position under the rocking of the lever 3|, the cigar Z is prevented from rolling out of the groove 25 by means of` a pair of bars 52 which are secured to the carriage 26 as shown in Fig. 3. These bars 52 are provided with downwardly disposed extensions 53, which are adapted, as shown in Fig. 4, to engage an edge of a clamping member 8 and thus swing the clamping member 8 into open position.
Figure 1 shows the device in a receiving position, with the carriage 26 delivering the cigar to the holding means. A spring 23 engaging a pin 22 carried by one of the levers 4 maintains the device in a receiving position. The levers 4 are swung to a delivering position by means of a cam 2U2| mounted on a shaft 24. A roller I9 carried by one of the levers 4 engages the cam 2li-2 I and the spring 23 normally holds the roller I9 in contacting relation with the cam 2li-2|.
After the cigar has been delivered to the drum I, the cup member I2 associated with the channel 2 which has just received a cigar is moved inward to an operative position by means of a push-rod 4| which is slidable in a boss 4l) carried by the frame G of the machine. The pushrod 4I has a block 42 secured thereto by means of a set-screw 43 or the like, and this block 42 is provided with an annular groove 44. A roller 45 mounted on a lever 46 engages in the groove 44, and the lever 46 is rockably mounted on a pivot 41. A spring 49 engaging a pin 48 on the lever 46 maintains a roller 50 carried by the lever 46 into contact with a cam member 5I mounted on the shaft 24. The inner end of the push-rod 4| is adapted to engage against the flat outer end I2 of a confronting cup member I2 and to hold this cup member I2 against the end of the cigar positioned in the groove 2.
A ratchet 38 is carried by one end of the drum I, and a pawl 36 is mounted on the shaft 21, and held against the ratchet 38 by means of a spring 39. This pawl 36 is constructed in a hook-shape so that when the cam 2D-2I swings the levers 4 to a delivering position, the pawl 36 will move the drum I forward for the desired degree, and the cup member I 2 which is held by the push-rod 4I will then move away from the rod 4I and will slidably engage a segmental plate 54 which is liXed relative to the frame. This segmental plate 54 constitutes a holding plate for holding a number of the cup members I2 in operative position.
A pawl or clamp releasing arm 55 is mounted on a shaft 56 carried by a support 51, and this arm 55 is positioned in the path of the movement of a lug 6I carried by the lever 9. A spring 59 which is connected at one end to a` pin 58 mounted on the arm 55 and at the other end to a pin 60 constantly maintains the arm 55 in an operative position, as shown in Fig. l. When the arm 55 engages the lug 6I, and the drum I is rotated through one cycle by means of the pawl 36, the arm 55 will swing the clamping member 8 to a released position, as shown in Fig. 3, and the released cigar will then roll downwardly on an inclined plate 62 onto a conveyor 63. At the time the lug 6I is initially engaged by the releasing arm 55, the drum I is rotated by the pawl 36, and the cup member I 2 associated with the clamping member 8 which is being released will pass the end of the segmental holding member 54, and the spring I4 will move the cup member I2 to a released position.
In the use and operation of this device, assuming that the device is in the position shown in Fig, 3, where the carriage 26 is in a position to receive the cigar from the cigar machine. When the cigar Z has been received in the groove 25 of the carriage 26, the cam member 2li-2| will act to effect movement of the drum I to the position shown in Fig. l, and at this time, the carriage 26 the cam 5 I.
is swung downwardly, or to the right as shown in Figs. l and 3. The bar 53 will engage the clamping member 8, as shown in Fig. 4 and then swing this clamping member 8 to an open position. With the cigar Z in the receiving groove 2, and with the associated clamping member 8 still held in open position by the bar 53, the push rod 4I will be moved inwardly through rotation of the cam 5| and the engagement of the roller 50 on Inward movement of the push rod 4I will move the confronting cup member I2 to an operative position about the end of the cigar,
and when the levers 4 are swung outward under the action of the cam 20-2I, the pawl 36 will rotate the drum I sufficiently to bring the cup member I2 engaged with the push rod 4I into engagement with the segmental holding bar 54. The length of the bar 54 and the size of the drum I will determine the length of time that the cup member I2 will be held in operative position about the end of the cigar.
Further rotation of the cam member 20-2I will effect outward swinging of the levers 4 and the drum I to the position shown in Fig. 3. As the levers 4 swing outwardly, the pawl 36 will rotate the drum; I through one cycle, and simultaneous with the outward swinging and the rotation of the drum I, the releasing member 55 will contact with the lug 6I which is carried by the clamping member 8 disposed in the delivering position, so that the clamping member 8 which is in the delivering position will be moved to a released position, as shown in Fig. 3, and the cup member I2 will likewise be released from the holding bar 54 so that the cigar Z may roll down the chute 62 onto the conveyor 63.
When the drum I swings to a delivery position, the carriage 26 is returned to a receiving position, and the upward swinging of the carriage 26 will permit the clamping member 8 held in open position by the bar 53 to swing to a clamping position.
This device will hold the wrapper about the tip end of the cigar until the adhesive used to hold the wrapped dries suiiciently to prevent unwrapping of the wrapper, and this device will perform this operation without in any way affecting the operation of the cigar making machine.
