1 Claim.

This invention relates to boots and shoes and, as illustrated herein, more particularly to shoe uppers and methods of making the same.

In the manufacture of boots and shoes, the appearance of a moccasin-type shoe has been simulated by stitching, or otherwise securing, a plug to the vamp. These plugs, however, have done little, if anything, to enhance the appearance of the shoe. One object of the present invention, accordingly, is to provide a shoe upper which will be effective to provide the desired moccasin appearance and also to increase the decorative qualities of the upper. To this end, one feature of the invention resides in shoe upper formed of a plurality of members, one member having a plurality of integrally formed tabs, another member having a plurality of openings for receiving said tabs, and means for securing the members and the tabs together.

Another feature of the invention resides in a method of making shoe uppers which includes forming a series of tabs on a shoe upper member, forming a corresponding number of holes in a second member, placing one of the members on the other, threading the tabs on the first member through the holes in the second member, and securing the tabs and the members together.

With the above and other objects and features in view, the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a shoe showing one embodiment of the present invention;

Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the shoe shown in Fig. 1;

Fig. 3 is a top view of the vamp shown in Figs. 1 and 2;

Fig. 4 is a view similar to the one shown in Fig. 3 but showing the underside of the vamp;

Fig. 5 is a view in cross-section taken along the line 5-5 of Fig. 3;

Fig. 6 is a view in cross-section taken along the line 66 of Fig. 3, and

Fig. '7 is a view showing the plug used in the vamp shown in Fig. 3.

The shoe l2 shown in Fig. 1 is provided with a vamp I4 and a plug l6. As is best shown in Fig. 7, the plug I6 is provided near its edges with a plurality of substantially semi-circular perforations or openings I 8 and the toe end thereof is provided with a tab for purposes which will soon become apparent. The underside of the vamp M has secured thereto a lining member 22. After the vamp and the lining member have been secured together, a plurality of tabs 24 are formed in the vamp and lining. The tabs 24 are so located that the attached ends thereof are in a position coinciding substantially with the 10 edge of the plug l6 when it is properly located on the vamp I4. At the forward part of the vamp It a V-shaped cut is made to form a tab 25. The tabs 24 and the tab 25 are folded back onto the top face of the vamp M, the plug it is properly positioned and secured to the vamp I 4 by a line of stitches 26 which extend through the plug [6, the vamp l4 and the lining 22 but does not extend through the tabs 24. The free ends of the tabs 24 are then threaded through the perforations or n openings l8 and are secured in position by a line of stitching 28. This final line of stitching completes the vamp M.

The quarter 30, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is provided with a forward portion 32 which is provided with a plurality of semi-circular holes or openings 34. The rear portion of the quarter is provided with a number of tabs 36. These tabs 36 are folded back and the parts of the quarter secured together by a line of stitches 38. The tabs 36 are then threaded through their respective holes 34 and are secured in place by a line of stitching 40.

By the use of the above described vamp, the shoe simulates a moccasin in appearance while, at the same time, enhancing the appearance of the finished shoe.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

A shoe upper having a vamp provided with a plurality of inwardly extending tabs, 2. member provided with a plurality of openings through which the tabs are threaded, means securing the member to the vamp, and means securing the free ends of the tabs to the vamp and to the member.
