Description
May 2, 1939. c. VlTEK CONDIMENT CONTAINER Filed Dec. 9, 1936 2 Sheets-Sheet l u. 4 WIIIIIIIIIIVIIIIA 'Illllll'llllllllll.
Patented May 2, 193a pirso stares i- ATENT OFFIQE This invention relates generally to condiment containers and has particular reference to novel salt and pepper dispensers.
Among the objects of my invention is to provide a novel combined salt and pepper shaker which shall be especially adapted for advertising and souvenir purposes and which shall be found useful as a salt and pepper dispenser in the home, restaurant, tavern, hotel dining room and on railroad dining cars. It maybe used by the housewife as a holder and dispenser for two different condiments.
Another feature of my invention resides in the provision of discharge openings arranged in preferably narrow elongated formations to facilitate the dispensing of the condiments into comparatively small mouth openings of bottles, and the like, whereby the discharge of the condiment may be more readily controlled or directed to defined areas or portions. The discharge openings are preferably disposed in spouts embossed or pressed-out from the side wall of the dispenser to further facilitate and guide the discharge of the condiment therefrom, or hinged perforated covers may be provided for the spouts.
Another object of my invention is found in the provision of a double compartment salt and pepper shaker so constructed and arranged that either of said condiments may be conveniently independently discharged without mixture of one with the other and still, if so desired, both of the condiments may be simultaneously discharged by simple obvious change in the position ofthe shaker in the hand of the'user.
Another object of my invention is to provide a double compartment in an oscillatable cylindrical drum-like container by the interposition of a partition wall transversely to the axis of rotation of such container, or in other words, by a partition wall which shall be disposed in substantial parallel alignment with the end walls of the container.
Still another object of the invention is to provide an oscillatable double compartment drum or container with a transverse partition wall fixed within such container; said partition wall being disposed intermediate the drum ends and having a pair of spaced oppositely disposed semi-conical deformations extending from its periphery and radially substantially toward its center and constituting curved fending plates adapted to be selectively positioned in register with a single filling opening within the upper central portion of a substantially circular band and which band supports the oscillatable container drum during its partial rotations in the registration of either of said fending plates with its central filling opening to thereby permit the filling of the two compartments.
The side wall of the drum has spaced circular openings in registration with the spaced semiconical wall portions of the partition.
After the two compartments are filled with the desired condiments the drum-like container is oscillatedto the position shown in Fig. 4 so that the two semi-conical formations register with the dischargespouts of the stationary retaining band.
Another object of my invention is to provide a condiment dispenser with a drum-like body of circular form having radially disposed spaced filling and discharge openings in the side thereof and a partition disposed transversely to the longitudinal axis of the body; said partition dividing the interior of the dispenser body into two compartments and the drum-like body being attached to a suitable supporting base.
A further object of my invention is to provide a condiment dispenser with a circular drum-like body fixed to a suitable supporting base and having a partition extending transversely to the longitudinal axis of the body dividing the interior thereof into two compartments, and each of said compartments having a filling and discharge opening in the circular side of the body provided with a perforated cover.
A still further object ofmy invention resides in the provision of a condiment holder having a container body of circular drum-like form including the ends of the body formed of spherical segments with integral marginal portions formed with recesses adapted to receive advertisement bearing sheets of Celluloid sprung into such recesses for support adjacent the exterior faces of the drum ends; said container body having an interior partition extending parallelly to the longitudinal axis thereof; the side of the drum-like body being secured to a suitable supporting base and having spaced filling and discharge openings provided with perforated covers.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel combination, construction and arrangement of the parts and members shown in preferred embodiments in the attached drawings, described in the following specification and particularly pointed out'in the appended claims.
In the drawings, in which like reference numerals indicate like or similar parts or members:

Fig. 10 is an end elevation of the device shown in Fig. 9;
Fig, 11 is a vertical section taken on line of .Fig. 10;
Fig. 12 is an end elevation of a further modified form of condiment holder embodying my invention, and
Fig. 13 is a vertical section of the drum-like body taken on line I3-l3 of Fig. 12.
In the condiment holder illustrated in the form of a metallic salt and pepper shaker shown in Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive, the drum-like container body I5 of circular cross-section consists of a cylindrical tubular metallic member l6 having preferably spaced circular filling and discharge openings 11 and marginal end portions forming annular beads [8 of substantially semi-circular cross-section, each of said beads l8 having the peripheral edge thereof spaced from its adjacent circular portion to provide a recess adapted to receive and secure therein the drum ends l9 which consist of circular metal disks.
As shown, the ends of the drum-like container are provided with Celluloid disks 20 mounted against the outer face of the drum end walls l9 and these disks have printed or otherwise impressed thereon a suitable advertisement 2| and are together with the drum ends l9 secured at their peripheral edges within the recesses of the beads l8. Obviously, these advertisement disks 20 could be omitted and the advertisement 2| could be printed on or pressed into the drum end I9.
The container 15 is divided into two inner compartments indicated by A and B by a partition wall 22 of metal or other material which extends transversely to the axis of the circular drum I5 and is secured in place within the tubular wall l6 by welding, soldering or by other suitable means,
The partition wall 22 is provided with a pair of oppositely and angularly disposed fending means preferably comprising spaced radially and oppositely disposed semi-conical formations 22 and 22 preferably formed integrally with the partition wall and the semi-circular peripheral edges of which are positioned in register with the circu lar openings I! of the drum side wall l6, -The drum-like container is oscillatably supported about its side wall l6 within a substantially circularly formed band 23 of a width to extend between the beads l8. At the top of the container body I5, the band 23 is provided with a centrally disposed opening 24 defined by an upstanding integral bead or circular rim 25. The band 23 is also formed with a pair of integral embossed or pressed-out outlet spouts 26 spaced one on each side of the filling opening 24 and having preferably comparatively narrow elongated per-' forated faces 21 constituting discharge spouts for the condiments in compartments A and B.
The band 23 is slightly offset near its ends to thereby provid a pair of spaced abutments 28 constituting stops for the bar 29 fixed to the outside of the lower face of the drum I6 whereby proper alignment of either of said conical portions 22 or 22 with the filling opening 24 during oscillation of drum I6, is facilitated.
The offset end portions of the band 23 are bent downwardly as at 38 and terminate in laterally oppositely bent ends 3| which are adapted to be secured to the base 34 by a washer 32 and screw 33 inserted through the center of the base 34 which is preferably formed of a circular sheet metal stamping having a downwardly flanged supporting marginal rim.
The base 34 is also preferably provided with a substantially right-angularly disposed upright wall 35 which is welded, soldered or otherwise secured to the top of base 34 and which constitutes an additional four-sided frame-like support for the vertically disposed portions 30 of the band 23.
The filling of compartment A with the desired condiment is afforded by a partial clockwise rotation of the drum l6, as viewed in Fig. 4, to the extent when bar 29 engages one of the band stops 28 and the conical deformed portion 22 of the central partition 22 is brought into register with the filling opening 24. An opposite rotation of the drum I6 is adapted to register the conically formed fending portion 22 with opening 24 to thereby afford the filling of compartment B with the same or preferably different condiment.
When both compartments A and B have been filled, the drum I6 is rotated to the position shown particularly in Figs, 2, 4 and 5 wherein the opening 24 will be closed by the portion of the drum wall l6 extending between the circular openings lltherein and which openings I1 and their aligned semi-circular rim portions of the conical deformations of the partition wall 22 will then be brought into alignment with the two perforated discharge spout-like portions 26 of 5 the band 23 to thus permit the discharge of the condiments from either compartment A or B upon the desired tilted position of the holder in the hand of the user.
In the event it is desired to insure the retainment of the sheet of advertising matter 20 on the holder and to prevent its removal therefrom, when such condiment holder is placed upon the market for advertising purposes, the ends IQ of the drum l6 may be provided with spaced perforations 36 which would permit the discharge of the condiments from compartments A and B therethrough in the event the sheets of advertising matter 20 were removed.
In the modification of my invention shown in Figs. 7 and 8, the container 31 consists of a circular side wall l6 having marginally formed beads l8 adapted to clampingly support the circular disk-like drum ends [9. The side wall I6 is provided with a pair of spaced radially disposed circular openings 38 having outstanding circular walls 39 provided with perforated screw discharge caps 40. The container is also provided with a transverse partition wall 22 dividing the interior into compartments A and B and having integral oppositely disposed semi-conical deformations 22 and 22 like those shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the semi-circular rims of which are in alignment with the circular rims of openings 38 and this arrangement obviates the offsetting or staggering of the filling and discharge spouts 39 relatively to the partition wall 22 which is positioned midway of the container end walls l9.
The container 31 is secured to a suitable metal stamped or cast base 4| as by bolts 42. p
A suitable sheet of advertising matter 20 may be mounted on the ends I9 and secured within the beads l8, or the advertisement may be applied as by paint or impressed directly on the container ends I9.
In the modification of my invention shown in Figs. 9, 10 and 11, I show a condiment holder 31 which is similar in construction to that described above and shown in Figs. 7 and 8, ex-
cept that in this design, the filling and discharge. spouts 43 constitute angular walls defining elon gated openings near the upper ends of the end walls l9 provided with hinged perforated covers 44, and the partition wall 45 consists of a fiat circular plate.
If desired, a paper or Celluloid advertisementbearing band 46 may be glued or otherwise sel.
cured to the outer face of the wall I6 which is mounted on and secured to the base 4| by bolts 42 or the advertisement may be applied as paint or impressed directly on the wall Hi.
The modification of my invention shown in Figs. 12 and 13 comprises a circular drum-like container 41 fixed to a supporting base 4i, in
the manner as shown in Figs. 8 and 11, and consisting of a cylindrical side wall 48 having peripheral beads 49 adapted to be crimped or clamped over the peripheral edges 56 of the cone tainer ends 50. The interior of the container is divided in two compartments C and D by a central partition wall extending parallelly to the longitudinal axis of the container.
The side wall 48 is provided with a pair of spaced filling and discharge spouts 52 having hinged perforated covers 53.
The end walls 50 are formed with outwardly disposed spherical central portions 54 bounded by outwardly projecting integral marginal beads 55 having peripheral edges 56 disposed transversely to the longitudinal axis of the container and secured within the annular beads 49 of the side 48.
The portion 57 which is formed integrally with the bead portion 55 and the central end wall portion 54 extends inwardly of the outer face of the end wall 50 and constitutes an annular recess adapted to receive a circular disk 58 of Celluloid or other suitable material which may be of any desired color for ornate purposes or provided with an advertisement printed or otherwise applied thereon,
From the above description and attached illustrations it is obvious that various changes and modifications may be readily made in the details of construction of the various parts and members shown and described without departing from the spirit of my invention as embodied in the appended claims.
