attaching means exposed beyond the distal end thereof. In the form shown, this is a hook 32. This hook is fixed in position during the operation of the device. Securing means attach it to some fixed element such as the bracket 22. These means may be arod 34 extending through the arm 30. The rod 34 may be removably fixed to bracket 22.
-'The'piece of material which is to be reversed is ordinarily tube-shaped. It need not be closed at either end. It is slid over the arm 30. The end of the material distal from head 28 is attached to hook 32. The head 28 is then moved along the rails 26 and the material 21 slides'over the distal end of the arm asthe latter passes over and beyond the fixed hook 32. During the motion of the arm, filling material 29 may be fed into the arm 30 so as to be within the reversed piece of material. When the arm 30 has passed completely beyondthe hook 32 so that the latter has come out of the other end of the former, the material may be disengaged from the hook and pulled out of the arm 30;
Means are provided for assisting in the operation of the hook 32. This may take the form of a latch secured to the hook 32 or, as shown, it comprises a tube 36 coaxial with arm 3|] and positioned between arm 36 and the rod 34. Where the material to be reversed is in the form of a very slender tube, for example, fine piping, the rod' 34 and the hook 32 may be fine wires. The tube 36 normallyextends just'beyond and around hook 32.. The tube 36 is supported by a frame 38.
. Means are provided togive the tube anaxial motion so that the hook may be exposed. Frame 38 may be movably attached to element 40 on bracket 22. Resilient means42 tend-to hold the frame and tube so that. hook 32 is covered. A lever mechanism 44 moves the frame and tube against the action of spring 42 so that it exposes the hook. After the material has been attached to the hook, the tube is moved back so as to protect the hook and, in certain cases, to clamp the material between itself and the hook. Thus, there may be held between the hook 32 and the tube 36 the 45 end ofa piece of material of simple tubular form, i. e., a piece of .m-aterial having no attaching straps, loops, or the like. The material is jammed between the hook and the tube and may beheld with respect to the tube by the jamming action solely,
' Although the device may be operated by hand, it is desirable that the hands of the operator be free-and mechanisms are provided for moving the head and arm otherthan manually. Thus,
the head 28 may be connected to a lever 48 by a connection or strap 46 which passes over a pulley 49 attached to the base. The lever is pivoted around a pivot 50 which is fixed to a support 52 dependent from the base 20. A spring 54 tends to hold the lever in such a position that the strap 46 leaves the head at the initial position. A chain 56 connects the lever with a pedal 58 which is rotatable about a piece fill fixed to the floor. By operating the pedal, the lever is pivoted, drawing the strap and head along the rails 26.
Automatic means may be provided for returning the head and arm to the initial position. Thus, a strap 62 may connect the head 28 and a roller 64 which is spring-operated and which is fixed to bracket 22. A similar strap 66 may connect the head 28 with a spring-operated roller 68 fixed to bracket 24. 1 fIhe spring associated with roller 68 should be of sufiicient strength to wind up the strap 66 when head 28 ismoved toward roller 68. The spring in connection with roller 64 should be strong enough to Wind up the strap and to draw the head 28 back toward bracket '22 when the pressur on the foot pedal 58 is removed. 7
The straps may be of sufficient width to cover the rails 26 and there may be slide elements 10 extending up from the base 20 WhiCh With the straps, enclose the rails 25. The material is thus protected from the rails and the oil thereon, and
the rails are shielded from lint.
Spring means 12 and 14 may be associated with the rails or some other fixed part of the device to prevent the head from slamming against either end of the device. Felt washers ll may surround the openings in the head through which the rails 26 pass.
Theremay be a driver l5 slidable along the outside of arm 30 and under the influence of spring I]. The pusher is normally positioned between the head 28 andthe material to be reversed. It drives or assists in driving the material over the distal end of the arm 38. This is, ofgparticular advantage when the material to be reversed is made up of sections cut on the bias.
Figs. 4-9 show successive positions of. the hook, its assisting tube 36 and the main arm 30,. The hook in these figures should be, considered as remainingfixed. In Fig. 5,.the tube 36 has been drawn back to expose the. hook and the material has been caught 'ontothe. hook.. In certain cases, it is desirable to insert a lining into the principal material as it is being reversed. To this end, and for other purposes, a pusher rod 16 is positioned coaxial with arm 30 and supported by bracket 24. 7 closed at one end and slid over the pusher 16. The main material is put over arm 30 and attached to hook 332. The arm 30 is then moved toward the pusher 16 so that, as the material feeds into arm 30, the pusher inserts the lining at the same time,-the arm 30 passing along and mounted by-screw means 18. i The lining may be The lining may be attached to pusher 16 by hook means on 16 or similar to hook means 32 and 34.
The element 40 may be rotatable about an axis on bracket 22 so that when head 28 has been moved toward bracket 24 a sufficient distance, the hook 32, the rod 34 and the tube 36 are completely exposed and may be pivoted. When they have been so pivoted, the head and arm may be brought back to the initial position, but the hook, its rod, and its tube no longer extend therethrough. The element 40 and attached parts may be entirely demountable from bracket 22 so that they may be axially removable from the device.
Since certain changes may be made in the above construction, and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to. be understood that the following claims are intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the. invention which, as a matter of language, might be said .to fall therebetween.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination comprising a hollow element, a sec-. ond element, one of said elements being movable with respect to the other whereby in a certain relative position said second element extends through said hollow element and in a certain other relative position said second element does not extend through said hollow element, and
means'other than said hollow element associated with said second element and movable as a whole away from a portion of said second element and adapted forsecuring to said second element a flexible piece of material of reversible, simple tubular form when said elements are in the first mentioned position. 7

In a device of the character described, the combination comprising a hollow element, a second element, one of said elementsbeing movable with respect to the otherfrom a certain relative position, in which said second element extends through said hollow element and in a certain other relative position said second element does not extend throughv said hollow element, and a third element, said second and third elements being relatively movable between a position,
where said third element is positioned outside of said second element, and another position, where sad third element is positioned inside of said second element, said third element being *for securing to said second element a flexible piece of material of reversible form.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination comprising. a hollow element, a second element, one of said elements being movable with respect to the other from a certain relative position, in which said second element extends through said hollow element, to a certain other relative position in which said second element does not extend through said hollow element, and a third element, said second and third elements being relatively movable between a position where said third element is positioned outside of said second element, and another position, where said third element is positioned inside of said second element, said third element being for securing to said second element a flexible piece of material of reversible form when the two first-mentioned elements are in the first-mentioned position.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination comprising a tubular member open at both ends, a pull rod in axial alignment with the tubular axis of said member, means other than said tubular element and movable as a whole away from a portion of said rod and adapted for attaching a flexible piece of material of reversible, simple tubular form to said rod, and means adapted for giving a relative displacement tosaid member and said rod whereby a piece of material open at one end and open or closed at the other end and originally positioned on said member may, upon such displacement, be turned inside out.
6. In a device of the character described, the combination comprisinga tubular member open at both ends, a pull rod in axial alignment with the tubular axis of said member, means for attaching a flexible piece of material of reversible form to one end of said rod, means which extend through said tubular member for assisting in said attaching and operable from the other end of said rod, and means for giving a relative displacement to said member and said rod whereby a piece of material open at one end and open or closed at the other end and originally positioned on said member may upon such displacement be turned inside out.
7. In a device of the character described, the combination comprising a member having an opening, means adapted for being attached to a flexible piece of material of reversible form,-

In a device of the character described, the combination comprising a tubular member open at both ends, a pull rod in axial alignment with the tubular axis of said member, means for attaching aflexible piece of material of reversible form to said rod, means for giving a relative displacement to said member and said rod whereby a piece of material open at one end and open or closed at the other end and originally positioned on said member may, upon such displacement, be turned inside out, supporting means for said member, guiding means along which said sup-- porting means are movable, said rod extending through said tubular member when said supporting means are in one position, said rod being spaced in an axial direction from said tubular member when said supporting means are in another position, and guard means for covering said displacement-giving means and the portions of said guide means which are successively exposed as said movable supporting means moves along said guide means at'difierent positions of said sup-porting means.

In a device of the character described, the combination comprising a member having an opening, means adapted for being attached to a flexible piece of material of reversible form, means adapted for giving a relative displacement to said member and said attaching means whereby a piece of material associated with said member and attached to said means may, upon such displacement, be moved through said opening and turned inside out, said first-mentioned means comprising a pair of elements, one of said pair being movable with respect to the other, and means for holding said pair in juxtaposition whereby said piece of material may be jammed between said juxtaposed pair.
11. A device of the character described, the combination comprising a member having an opening, means adapted for being attached to a flexible piece of material of reversible form,
'means adapted for giving a relative displacement to said member and said attaching means whereby a piece of material associated with said member and attached to said means may, upon such displacement, be moved through said opening andturned inside out, said first-mentioned means comprising a pair of elements, one of said pair being movable with respect to the other, and means for holding said pair in juxtaposition whereby said piece of material may be jammed between said juxtaposed pair, one of said elements being a rod and the other of said elements being ber and attached to said means may, upon such displaoement, be moved through said opening and turned inside out, said first-mentioned means comprising a pair of elements, one of said pair being movable with respect to the other, means for holding said pair in juxtaposition whereby said piece of material may be jammed between said juxtaposed pair, one of said elements being a rod and the other of said elements being a tube co-axial with said rod, and means positioned beyond said member for releasing said pair from juxtaposed position.
