IMPROVEMENT IN COIL-HOLDERS FOR ROPES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 215,609, dated May 20, 1879; application filed March 26, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WINFIELD S. HANFORD, 2d, of East Norwalk, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coil- Holders for Ropes, of which the following is a description, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

This invention relates to holders for ropes and cords put up in coils and designed to be retailed by cutting off measured quantities from the coil. Ordinarily, rope as supplied by the manufacturer or wholesale dealer to the retail trader is put up in coils, each of which is held in form by binding-cords, that, on being cut, expose the rope in the coil to ravel, kink, and straggle or scatter by reason of the loose condition of the rope after it has been drawn upon to sell by retail. To obviate this the rope has been unwound from the coil and wound on a Windlass-barrel, and unwound therefrom as required to be sold in measured quantities; but this is an expensive, tedious, and clumsy mode of retailing rope.

The object of this invention is to construct a coil-holder which shall receive upon it the bound coil of rope as it comes from the manufacturer, and shall provide for paying it out without any liability to ravel, kink, or scatter; and to these and other ends the invention consists in a novel construction of a reel having a transversely partible and extensible barrel for accommodating different widths of coil, and in the combination, with an extensible and partible reel, of a frame and rope-guide of novel construction, whereby facility is afforded in the use of the coil-holder.

Figure 1 represents a front view of a coilholder constructed in accordance with the invention, and having a coil of rope in its place thereon; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section thereof,

and Fig. 3 an end view of the same.

A A represent the frame of the coil-holder, which frame is composed of a lower stationary portion, A, and a pivoted or hinged upper portion, A, pivoted at b to the lower portion, A, and capable of being turned or thrown back to receive the reel B within it, and which, when closed, is locked by a spring or other catch, 0 d.

The reel B, which is removable from the stationary portion A by opening or throwing back the pivoted upper portion, A, of said frame, is of an extensible construction in direction of its length or of the barrel 0 e, to provide for accommodating coils of rope of different widths, to which end said barrel is of sectional and telescopic construction, and the heads f f of said reel, or either of them, is or are arranged to screw onto a screw-rod, .g, which has its bearings in the lower portion, A, of the main frame. It is preferred, however, to have both heads to screw onto the opposite ends of the rod 9, to expedite the contraction and expansion of the reel, and to bring the paying end of the rope centrally within the frame A A of the holder. By the expansion and contraction of the barrel 6 e of the coil-holder the coil C, although varying in width, is kept snug or tight within the heads f f of the reel, to prevent entanglement of the rope 011 the barrel of the reel between the heads of the latter; and by making both heads f f adjustable time is economized, and the central position of the reel relatively to the frame A A is preserved. The upper portion, A, of the frame A A is provided with a guide, h, through which the rope, on cutting the binding-cords i, is led to pay out the rope free from entanglement when retailing it by measurement.

To place the coil C on the barrel of the reel,

either head f is removed, and the coilby its central opening slipped over the barrel 0 0, after which said head is replaced, and the-reel, with the coil on it, put into its bearings in the frame A A or lower portion, A, thereof.

I claim- 1. The combination of the upper pivoted portion, A, of the main frame, provided with a rope-guide, h, with an extensible reel carried by said frame, essentially as described.

2. The transversely-partible barrel 6 e, capable of expansion and contraction in direction of its length, in combination with one or more adjustable and removable heads, f, and the screw- I rod 9, substantially as specified.
