WANAMAKER CLAMP FOR HOSIEHY DRYING FORMS Filed May 12, 1937 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Apr. 11, 1939 2 1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CLAMP FOR R SIERY DRYING FORMS Harry F. Wanamaker, Philadelphia, Pa., assignor to Procter & Schwartz, Incorporated, Philadelphia, Pa., a corporation of Pennsylvania Application May 12, 1937, Serial No. 142,309 3 Claims. (Cl. 223-75) This invention relates to hosiery clamps for stocking form A, with laterally extending ears use with the stocking forms employed in hosiery 5, projecting from opposite edges respectively drying machinery of all kinds and particularly of the stem 3 to clamp the form therebetween that type of machine disclosed in the prior United by means of clamp screws 8.

The T-shaped supporting members include As disclosed in the above noted patents each vertical shanks 22 which are slidably mounted in of the stocking forms A is mounted In a carrier the standards I, 1 respectively. At the upper and lower ends respectively of In the present instance, the head I is prothe guideways 25, 25 are provided with stop abutvided with a central stem portion 3 having a ments 28, 28 and 29, 29 which limit the moveslot 4 adapted to receive the lower end of the ment of the shank 22 in the space 21 by the upper 55 pins 23 on the shank engaging the top abutments 23 and the lower pins 24 engaging the lower abutments 23.
The lower end of each shank 22 is provided with a stud on which is rotatably mounted a roller 3|. The rollers 3|, 3| are adapted to engage and ride against rails 32, 32 and 33, 33 which are retained in fixed position along the path traveled by the forms A.
The guideways 25, 25 are provided with intersecting passages 34, 34 through which the lower pins 24, 24 are adapted to pass while the pins 23, 23 are retained within the guideways 25, 25 and function as fulcrums for the shanks 22, 22 whereby the lower ends of the shanks swing outwardly and the cross bars and the clamp members "I, I0 carried thereby swing inwardly to bring the clamp members III, In flatly against the opposite faces of the form A into contact with the welt of the stocking mounted on said form.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2., the clamps Ill, l0 normally lie in a low position within the recesses B, 8 while a dry stocking is being removed from the form A and a wet stocking B is being placed thereon.
The boarder pulls the welt C down on the board or form A into approximately the first position shown at the left hand side of Fig. l.
The rollers 3|, 3|, as the form A moves along toward the right, first engage the inclined rails 32, 32 which raises the T-shaped supports of the clamps Ill until the form reaches the third position in Fig. l, at which the pins 23, 23 on the shank 22 are in engagement with the upper abutments 28, 28 on the standards I, I and the pins 2'4, 24 are in line with the cutouts 34, 34 in the guideways 25, 25.
The rollers 3|, 3| then engage ribs 35, 35 on the rails 32, 32 and the rails flare outwardly. As the form continues to move the flaring of the rails, from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the position shown in Fig. 4, causes the shanks 22, 22 to swing outwardly at their lower ends, causing the clamps |0, ID to engage the stocking welt C flatly on each of the opposite faces of the form A.
The rollers 3|, 3| then move under the rails 33, 33, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5, which moves the shanks 22 and the clamps l3, l0 downwardly, the clamps still being held firmly in contact with the stocking welt C by ribs 36, 36 on the lower sides of the rails 33. The downward movement of the clamps Ill, ||l pulls the welt C of the stocking downwardly which removes wrinkles from the leg portion of the stocking and sets" the stocking on the form.
In the course of travel of each form through and out of the drying chamber the clamps l0, l0 may be held continuously in contact with the welt C in which case the moisture evaporating from the welt passes through the wire mesh pad H and grid frame which supports said pad, or the clamps l3, "I may be released immedately after setting of the welt C on the form A.
In either case the rollers 3|, 3|, to release the clamps, engage another inclined rail, similar to the rails 32, which raises the shanks 2'2 and converge to move the pins 24 back through the cutouts 34 into the guideways 25, whereupon the rails decline and lower the clamps Ill, Ill into the recesses 8, 3 for a repeat of the operation.
Preferably, the clamps H] are locked in contact with the stocking on the form A after the setting operation and during the whole of the drying operation. This locking is accomplished by the guide pins 24, 24 being moved downwardly beyond the lower edges of the cutouts 34, 34 during the pulling down of the stocking by the rails 33. The rollers 3| ride oil the rails 33, at the ends thereof, and the springs 23 rock the carriers of the clamps Ill slightly in the direction opposite to that in which the shanks 22 were previously rocked by the flaring of the rails 32, until the guide pins 24 come to rest against the outer surfaces 31 of the standards which in tersect the lateral passageways formed by the cutouts 34 and which function as looking shoulders for the pins 24, 24.
The clamps I3, I0 are prevented from moving downwardly to an excessive extent by the lower edges of the clamps ||l coming to rest on the upper edges of the stem 3 and ears 5.
The construction disclosed above and in the accompanying drawings provides for movement of the clamps l0, III to positions below the lower edges of the forms A, out of the way of the stocking boarders when placing stockings on the forms, while still keeping the clamps within the shortest possible radius with respect to the axis of the spindles 2 about which the forms A and their complementary clamps, etc. revolve in their passage along their circuit of travel in the drying machine, which makes it possible to reduce the clearances for the forms at points in the circuit where the forms may be required to turn while the clamps are in inoperative positions with respect to the form. This permits the forms to be run closer together in the machine which increases the capacity of the machine without increasing the size of the machine.
