Patented Apr. 11, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 8 Claims.
My invention relates to hand looms, and more particularly to hand looms comprising a rectangular frame having series of projecting pins upon said frame.
An important object of my invention is to provide positive means by which oppositely disposed pins on the frame may be easily calculated, to facilitate winding and weaving operations comprised in the use thereof.
Another object is to make such indicia palpable and permanent.
The invention also comprises novel details of construction and novel combinations and arrangements of parts, which will more fully appear in the course of the following description.
In the drawing, like reference characters designate similar parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a hand loom embodying features of my invention.
Figures 2 and 3 are side elevations looking in the directions of the arrows X and Y respectively of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a section taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 5 is a section taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 6 is a plan view of a modification.
Figure 7 is a side elevation of the modification, looking in the direction of the arrow Z.
Figure 8 is a side elevation of the modification, looking in the direction of the arrow W.
Figure 9 is a broken plan view of another modification.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the reference number It] generally designates a substantially square frame of a hand loom, comprising four sides l2, l3, l4 and I5. From the front face l6 of the frame I ll project series of pins ll. Generally speaking, each side of the frame has a longitudinal row of such pins.
To facilitate counting of rows of yarn, or other material, across the frame, indicia are provided. The indicia may consist of placing numbers adjacent the pins on the sides of the frame. In such a form, odd numbers iii are preferably placed along the right side l3, the numbering starting at the bottom, as suggested at l9. Even numbers 20 are provided along the opposite side IS. The even numbers 20 are upside down with regard to the odd numbers l8, and, considering the even numbers right side up, they number from the top' down.
Other indicia are shown in the drawing. An arrow 2| indicates the starting point in winding yarn, or other material, on the loom. The letters A? and B on the sides l4 and I3 respectively of the frame designate predetermined sides, which indicia assist the user in holding the proper side down in the use of the loom.
The letter W, substantially at the junction of the sides 13 and M, designates the starting point for weaving. It is believed that detailed descriptions of the winding and weaving are unnecessary here, since they are well known to one skilled in the art. Sufiice to say that the 10 odd and even numbers are followed consecutively, always passing the yarn around two pins.
To further facilitate the use of my hand loom and to enlarge its use, I also provide permanent, palpable means for indicating groups of pins. The indicia may, therefore, take the forms of transverse and longitudinal grooves, respectively shown at 22 and 23. Of course, the grooves may be painted colors differentiating from the color of the frame, and, if desired, distinguishing from each other.
It will be noted that the longitudinal grooves 23 embrace three pins each, that the grooves 23 are alined, and that the ends of the grooves are spaced from each other, to denote separate groups.
\ In the case of the transverse grooves 22, they also separate the groups embraced by the respective longitudinal grooves 23.
In the modification shown in Figures 6, '7 and 8, it is to be understood that the pins 25, are continued around the frame, as shown in Figure 1. In this modification, the longitudinal grooves 23 and transverse grooves 22 are also applied to the edges of the frame. By this arrangement, the counting of rows may be done along the edges as well as on the top of the frame.
In the modification shown in Figure 9, the pins are arranged in groups of three, as suggested at 21. Indicia consisting of transverse grooves 26 separate one from the other two pins in each group.
The use of the present invention is believed clear from the foregoing. The winding or wrapping and the weaving are done in a conventional manner, with the present invention facilitating such steps.
While I have illustrated and described what I now regard as the preferred embodiment of my invention, the construction is, of course, subject to modifications without departing from the spirit of my invention. I, therefore, do not wish to restrict myself to the particular form of construction illustrated and described, but desire to avail myself of all modifications which may fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A hand loom comprising a rectangular frame, rows of pins of substantially uniform height along the sides of the frame, substan tially defining a rectangle of pins, and palpable indicia on the frame apart from the pins, indicating groups of the pins, to facilitate the use of the loom.
2. A hand loom comprising a rectangular frame, rows of pins of substantially uniform height along the sides of the frame, substantially defining a rectangle of pins, and palpable indicia on the frame apart from the pins, indicating groups of pins, the groups each containing three pins each, except at the corners.
3. A hand loom comprising a rectangular frame, rows of pins along the sides of the frame, substantially defining a rectangle of pins, and. palpable indicia comprising alined grooves substantially parallel with the rows of pins, abut:
ting ends of the grooves being spaced from each other to indicate separate groups of pins.
4. A hand loom comprising a rectangular frame, rows of pins along the sides of the frame, substantially defining a rectangle of pins, and
palpable indicia comprising grooves transverse of the rows of pins and separating the pins into groups, to facilitate the use of the loom.
5. A hand loom comprising a frame, series of pins around the face of the frame, and palpable indicia along the edges of the frame, indicatin groups of the pins, to assist in the use of the frame.
6. A hand loom comprising a frame, series of pins around the face of the frame, and palpable indicia on the face of the frame transverse of the series of pins, separating the pins into groups, the indicia being substantially continued on the edges of the frame.
7. A hand loom comprising a frame, rows of pins around the face of the frame, the rows being separated by spaces into groups of three pins, and palpable means separating one pin of the several groups from the other two pins of the same groups, to assist in the use of the loom.
8. A hand loom comprising a rectangular frame, and rows of pins of substantially uniform height along the four sides of the frame, the frame having series of indentations corresponding with groups of the pins, the indentations being on opposite sides of the frame, to indicate corresponding groups at opposite sides of the frame.
