My invention relates to improvements in trapping or cutting devices for use in twisting, winding, spinning, doubling or like machines.
My invention is in certain respects an improvement on the broad invention shown in Henry Owens Patent 2,064,685, for Strand tensioning, slack compensating, selective trapping, and cutting device, patented December 15, 1936, and in the preferred embodiments of my invention I employ the same type of individual strand guides, a basic feature of said invention. In other respects, it provides an alternative and in certain respects a simpler construction for accomplishing this same general purpose, and instead of providing selective cutters to break offset strands as in the structure employed in said patent, employs a single actuating means for actuating all the cutting and trapping devices to break all the strands simultaneously. As stated in paragraph four on page one of said patent the selective device is preferably employed when thicker yarns are being twisted with lighter yarns so that it may function to break the lighter yarn and thus provide positive means to break the other strand or strands on breakage of one strand despite irregularities in and respectively different sizes of the yarns being twisted, wound or spun. For this purpose I employ the cutting or trapping means for each strand and the individual strand guide means adapted to keep the strands separate shown in said patent and interpose yieldable means between each strand guide means and its cutting or trapping means so that if a cutting or trapping means be stopped in its forward movement by a thicker yarn the means may yield to permit the force of the dropping guide means to continue to move said yieldable means to positively break a yarn of smaller diameter comprising one of the other strands, and this yieldable means may comprise either a floating member or a resilient member to permit of this yielding action.
' Employing this structure it is obvious that the structure of the cutting or trapping means may be perfectly straight throughout and not diagonally crossed as shown in said Owens patent.
A further object of my invention is to provide a construction which may operate on any number of threads, being limited only by the size of the guide means so that they may be of sufficient weight to move an intermediate member plus all cf the cutting or trapping means.
These and such other objects of my invention as may hereinafter appear will be best understood taken through portions of a twisting frame showing my invention attached to a portion thereof between the draft rolls and supply bobbins thereof with a guide lever in operative position supported by the thread, along the line 33 of Fig. 1.

My invention is adapted to be used where strands from two or more sources of supply are combined by suitable means or mechanism into a single strand, such as in twisting, winding, spinning, doubling or other like machines working on preferably light textile or other strands and having twisting or draft means, and where it is desirable to prevent singling, on breakage of one strand to break all the other strands and to provide a device which is at all times positive in its action. I have shown in Fig. 3 my invention mounted on a twisting frame having the twisting or draft rolls [4 rotatably mounted thereon to twist the plurality of strands from the supply bobbins into a single strand, said twisting frame having a strand guide for guiding the twisted strand onto revolving bobbins (not shown), each of the two strands 26 and 20 in the embodiment shown being led from their respective supply bobbins. While I have shown my invention mounted on a type of twisting machine, it is obvious that it may be employed on any other type of twisting machine, winding machine, spinning machine, roving machine, doubling machine, or like machine having similar problems.
My invention specifically includes the individual strand guide means 22, 22 and 22 for each respective strand, two being shown in the embodiment shown in Figs. 5 to 9 and three in the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 4, each independently pivotally mounted as at 24, 24 and 24 underneath its respective strand 29, 20 and 26, and I provide individual cutting or trapping means 26, 26 and 26 for each strand each projecting directly upwardly and terminating in the respective cutting or trapping edges 28, 28 and 28.
Each strand guide 22, 22 and 22 is preferably so pivotally mounted as at 24, 24 and 24 as to normally exert a light weight only on its respective strand and so that it may drop a substantial distance vertically away from its pivot 24, 24 and 24 preferably of its own weight to compensate for slack in its respective strand to continuously maintain a uniform tension on said strand with increasing leverage until either on an accumulation of a predetermined amount of slack or on breakage of a strand, said strand guide may act with sufficient increased leverage 30 are adapted to actuate the independently mounted work arms 26, 26 and 26 preferably through the medium of a lost motion connection later to be'described.
My improved invention includes the inverted U-shaped frame 32 having the inverted U-base 34, the U-legs 36 and the flanges 38 projecting laterally from the lower ends of said legs having the screw slots 39 therein for mounting thereof on the machine frame preferably as in the embodiments shown near the twisting or draft means M of said machine. The inverted U-base 34 is provided with the central transverse slot 46 therein over which the strands 20, 26 and 26 are adapted to pass. In my preferred embodiment I also provide the tension post 42 mounted from one leg 36 "of said 'U-shaped frame 32 to extend horizontally transversely over said slot 49 above said strands. 7 While I preferably employ the tension post "42 to assist in exerting a more even tension on the strands 20, 2|! and 20 to the draft or twisting means I4, and to provide a surface against which the trapping or cutting arms 26, 26 and 26 may function, it is obvious that it may if desired, be dispensed with.
I provide a pivot pin 46 mounted transversely of said frame below said post 42 and I pivotally mount the relatively light work arms 26, 26 and 26 on said pivot pin 46 to extend upwardly through the frame transverse slot 46 and terminating in the trapping or cutting edges 28, 28 and 28 adjacent their respective strands 20, 29 and 29 below said post 42. It is thus obvious that with this construction that the rear pivotal movement of said work arms 26, 26 and 26 is limited by the rear edge of said transverse slot 49 for the purpose of assisting in providing the lost motion connection later to be described and that the forward pivotal movement thereof is limited by the post 42.
In both embodiments shown, I provide yieldable means interposed between each strand guide means 22, 22 and 22 and its respective cutting means 26, 26 and 26. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 4, said yieldable means comprises a resilient spring 46, 48 and 48, mounted on the rear surface respectively of each work arm by the respective pins 49, 49 and 49, to be normally spaced therefrom and bendable towards said surfaces. means employed in the embodiment shown in Figs. 5 to 9 will be described later. In both embodiments of my invention I provide plate means 58 of substantially the total width of all said work arms 26, 26 and 26 independently pivotally mounted on the same pivot pin 46 pivotal to a position abutting each of said springs 48, 48 and 48 if employed as in the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 4 or the rear surface of said work arms 26, 26 and 26 if not employed as in the embodiment shown in Figs. 5 to 9. In the embodiment of my invention shown in Figs. 5 to 9 the yieldable means interposed between each strand guide means and its cutting or trapping means comprises said plate means 58 itself, and it is obvious that in the operation of the device it may be yieldable to be alternately horizontally pivoted to the positions shown in Figs. 8 and 9. For pivotal mounting of said plate means 53 on said pivot means 46 it is provided with the arms 66 at each end thereof having holes 62 therein for pivotally mounting said plate means 58 on said pin 46-. For the yieldable movement of the embodiment shown in Figs. 5 to 9, said arms are provided with the elongated pivot slots 62' therein so that said plate means 58 may pivot longitudinally to said positions shown in Figs. 8 and 9.
I mount a second pivot pin 52 transversely of said frame in rear of said first pivot pin 46 and I provide a plurality of guiding levers 54, 54 and 54 each pivotally mounted as at 24, 24 and 24 on second pivot pin 52 each having in the embodiments shown, the work arms 56, 56 and 56 respectively projecting arcuately forwardly therefrom, preferably bent to generate a substantially involute cam upper surface to abut the lower surface or rear end of said plate means 58 to advance said work arms 26, 26 and 26, where the involute cam surfaces be employed, at constant speed on dropping of one of said guide lever power arms 30, 39 and 36. The guide lever power arms 36, 36 and 36 are the respective power arms of the ' l'e'vers 54, 54 and 54 and have mounted on the ends thereof the strand The specific type of yieldable the embodiments shown the width of the slot 40 is so regulated that when therespective work arms 26, 26 and 26 abut the rear edge of said slot, the trapping lever power arms 26, 26 and 26 will be out of contact with the plate means 58, the forward movement of the power arms 30, 36 and 30 of said levers 54, 54 and 54 being limited by abutting the rear edge of said U- shaped frame 32 to thus normally space the work arms 56, 56 and 56 of said guide levers 54, 54 and 54 vertically below and away from the plate means 58.
In use, the respective strands 20, 20 and 20 are threaded through the strand guide means 22, 22 and 22 of said power arms underneath the post 42, through the rolls l4, and through the thread guide (not shown), it being obvious that in either embodiment that as the power arms 30, 30 and 30 with the guides 22, 22 and 22 mounted on the ends thereof are raised to a normal operating substantially vertical position that they will function to permit the trapping edges 28, 28 and 28 to drop as shown to permit the strands 20, 20 and 20 to be threaded underneath said post 42 over said cutting or trapping edges 28, 28 and 28. In the normal operation of the machine it will then be obvious that unless too much slack accumulates or a breakage occurs in the strands 20, 20 and 20 that the respective strands 20, 20 and 20 will normally retain their strand guides 22, 22 and 22 and lever power arms 30, 30 and 30 against the rear edge of said frame 32 in a position only slightly vertically offset from their pivots 24, 24 and 24 so that said guides 22, 22 and 22 and levers 30, 30 and 30 will exert only a relatively slight weight on the respective strands to said twisting or draft means. It is also apparent that with accumulation of slack between the draft means I4 and the source of supply of the respective strands 20, 20 and 20 that the guides 22, 22 and 22 and power arms 30, 30 and 30 will drop by gravity of their own weight to compensate for variations in slack in their respective strands away from the respective pivots 24, 24 and 24 to maintain a uniform tension on the respective strands and to permit said power arms 30, 3!! or 30 to drop a substantial distance without its respective work arm 56, 56 and 56 contacting said plate means 58 to provide a lost motion and that the respective guide lever power arms 30, 30 and 30 may drop a further substantial distance to compensate for slack in their respective strands away from their respective pivots 24, 24 and 24 to still maintain a substantially uniform tension on their respective strands and with increasing leverage with the work arms 56, 56 and 56 raising said plate means 58 at constant speed if an involute cam surface be employed until slow dropping of a power arm 30, 30 or 30 on an excessive amount of slack in its respective strand 20, 20 or 20 or breakage of such a strand causes its respective work arm 56, 56 or 56 to raise said plate means 58 to cause all said trapping lever Work arms 26, 26 and 26 toabut said post or respective strands 20, 20 and 20 with sufficient increased leverage to break all said strands.
As stated hitherto, the functioning of the guide levers 54, 54 and 54 is exactly similar to that of the embodiments shown in Owens patent, No. 2,064,685, and described in more detail on page 4 thereof, the work arms 56, 56 and 56, however, contacting the lower surface or rear end of the plate means 58 instead of the power arms 50 and 58 respectively integral with the work arms 26 and 26 as shown in said patent.
In the embodiment of my invention shown in Figs. 1 to 4 the front end of the plate means 58 then contacts the respective springs 48, 48 and 48 to function to move the respective work arms 26, 26 and 26 to trap all of the threads, the
respective springs 48, 48 and 48 yielding for this purpose to permit the plate means 58 to actuate all of the trapping means even if threads of lesser diameter be employed.
In the embodiment of my invention shown in Figs. 5 to 9, however, this yielding to insure that threads of all sizes will be trapped is provided by the floating action of the plate means 58 itself, the plate means horizontally pivoting for this purpose to trap a thread of smaller diameter on one side as shown in Fig. 8 or a thread of smaller diameter on the other side as shown in Fig. 9. It is obvious that in the embodiment of my invention shown in Figs. 1 to 4 any number of respective trapping means 26, 26 and 26 may be employed, with their respective guide means 22, 22 and 22 although in the actual structure shown in Figs. 5 to 9 only two respective trapping or cutting and guide means can be employed.
It is apparent, therefore, that I have provided a novel type of strand tensioning, slack compensating, trapping or cutting device with the advantages described above, in certain respects being an improvement on the structure shown in said Owens patent, No. 2,064,685, and in other respects comprising an alternative construction for accomplishing the same general purpose without a selective device thereby considerably cheapening the shape and nature of the various parts.
It is understood that my invention is not limited to-the specific embodiments shown and that various deviations may be made therefrom without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A trapping or cutting device for use in twisting, winding, spinning, doubling or like machines having twisting or draft means acting on a plurality of strands capable of exerting a uniform tension on the strands with variations in the slack thereof, comprising individual cutting or trapping means for each strand, individual strand guide means for each strand adapted to keep said strands separate and yieldable resilient means in terposed between each strand guide means and its cutting or trapping means, each of said individual strand guide means being pivotally mounted to be supported by its respective strand in a normal operating position substantially above but slight- 1y offset from its pivot to normally exert a light weight on its respective strand and adapted to drop of its own weight a substantial distance away from its pivot to continuously maintain a uniform tension on said strand with increasing leverage until either on an accumulation of a predetermined amount of slack in or on breakage of said strand, said strand guide means may drop with sufficient increased leverage to actuate of its own iii power said yieldable means to actuate all said cutting or trapping means to break all said strands.
2. A trapping or cutting device for use in twisting, winding, spinning, doubling. or like machines having twisting or draft means. acting on a plurality of strands capable of exerting a uniform tension on the strands with variations in the slack. thereof, comprising individual cutting or trapping means for each strand, individual strand guide means for each strand adapted to keep said strands separate and yieldable means interposed between each strand guide means and its cutting or trapping means, each of said individual strand guide means being pivotally mounted to be supported by its respective strand in a. normal operating position substantially above but slightly offsetfrom its pivot to normally exert a light Weight on its respective strand and adapted to drop of its own weight a substantial distance away from its pivot to continuously maintain a. uniform tension on said strand with increasing leverage until either on an accumulation of a predetermined amount of slack in or on breakage of said strand, said strand guide means may drop with sufficient increased leverage to. actuate of. its own power said yieldable means to actuate allsaid cutting or trapping meansv to break all said. strands.
3. A trapping or cutting device for use in twisting, winding, spinning, doubling or like machines having twisting or draft means acting on. a plurality of strands, comprising. individual cutting or trapping, means for each strand, individual strand guide means for each strand adapted to keep said strands separate and yieldable means interposed between each strand guide means and its cutting or trapping means, each of said indi vidual strand guide means being pivotally mounted to besupported by its respective strand in a normal operating position and capable of dropping w-ith sufiicient force on an accumulation of a predetermined amount of slack in or on breakage of said strand to actuate of' its own power said yieldable means to actuate all said cutting or trapping means to break all said strands.
4. A trapping, or cutting device for use in twisting, winding, spinning, doubling or like machines having twisting or draft means acting on a plurality of strands comprising individual cutting or trapping means for each strand, individual strand guide means for each strand adapted to keep said strands separate and plate means of a width to actuate all said cutting or trapping means pivotally mounted below said cutting or trapping means, said cutting or trapping means and said plate means being constructed to cause said plate means to yieldingly operate against all said cutting or trapping means, each of said individual strand guide means being pivotally mounted to be supported by its respective strand in a normal operating position and capable of dropping with suflicient' force on an accumulation of a predetermined amount of slack in or on breakage of its strand to actuate of its own power said plate means to actuate all said cutting or trapping means to break all said strands.
5. A trapping or cutting device foruse in twisting, winding, spinning, doubling or like machines having twisting or draft means acting on a plurality of strands, comprising individua-ll cutting or trapping. means for each strand, individual strand guide means for each strand adapted to keep said strands separate and plate means of a width to actuate all said cutting or trapping means pivotally mounted. below said cutting or trapping means, said cutting or trapping. means being constructed to cause said plate means to yieldingly operate against all said cutting or traping means, each of said individual strand guide means being pivotally mounted to be supported by its respective strand in a normal operating position and capable of dropping with suflicient force on an accumulation of a predetermined amount of slack in or on breakage of its strand to actuate of its own power said plate means to actuate all said cutting or trapping means to break all said strands.
6. A trapping or cutting device foruse in twisting, winding, spinning, doubling or like machines having twisting or draft means acting on a plurality of strands, comprising individual cutting or trapping means for each strand, individual strand guide means for each strand adapted to keep said strands separate and plate means of a width to actuate all said cutting or trapping means pivotally mounted below said cutting or trapping means, said plate means being constructed to cause said plate means to yieldingly operate against all said cutting or trapping means, each of said individual strand guide means being pivotally mounted to be supported by its respective strand in a. normal operating position and capable of dropping with sufiicient force on an accumulation of a predetermined amount of slack in or breakage of its strand to actuate of its own power said plate means to actuate all said cutting or trapping means to break all said strands.
7. A trapping or cutting device for use in twisting, winding, spinning, doubling or like machines having twisting or draft. means acting on a plurality of strands, comprising trapping or :1
cutting means for each strand each comprising individual pivotally mounted arm means extending upwardly to a cutting or trapping edge having resilient spring means mounted on the rear surface thereof, a single power arm plate means may project underneath said plate meansand be "It supported by its respective strand in normal operating position and capable of dropping with suflic-ient force on breakage of a strand to pivot of its own power said plate means to abut said resilient spring means to yieldingly actuate all said cutting or trapping means to break all said strands despite variations in diameter of' said strands.
8. A trapping or cutting device for use in twisting; winding, spinning, doubling or like machines having twisting or draft means acting on two strands, comprising trapping or cutting means for each strand each comprising individual pivotally mounted arm means extending upwardly to a cutting or trapping edge, a single power arm plate means of a width to actuate all said arm means independently mounted on the same pivot and having longitudinal pivot slots therein and individual strand guide means provided with work arm means projecting forwardly therefrom each pivotally mounted so that its respec tive work arm may project underneath saidplate means and be supported by its respective strand in normal ope-rating position and capable of dropping with sufiic-ient force on breakage of its strand .topivot of its own power said plate means to yieldingly abut all said cutting or trapping meansto break all said'strands despite variations in diameter of said strands.
9. A selective trapping or cutting device for use in twisting, winding, spinning, doubling or like machines having twisting or draft means acting on a plurality of strands, comprising an inverted U shaped frame mounted on said machine transversely in rear of said twisting or draft means having a central transverse slot therein over which said strands are adapted to pass and a tension post mounted on one side thereof to extend transversely horizontally over said slot above said strands, a pivot pin mounted transversely of said frame below said post, a plurality of trapping or cutting arms one for each strand each pivotally mounted on said pivot pin extending upwardly through said frame transverse slot and terminating in a trapping or cutting edge below said post adjacent its respective strand limited in its rear pivotable movement by the rear edge of said transverse slot and its forward pivotable movement by said post, a spring mounted on the rear surface of each arm to be normally spaced therefrom and bendable towards said surface, a plate of substantially the total width of said arms independently pivotally mounted on the same pivot pin pivotal to a position abutting each of said springs, a second pivot pin mounted transversely of said frame in rear of said first pivot pin and a guide lever for each strand pivotally mounted on said second pivot pin having a work arm projecting arcuately forwardly therefrom to abut said plate means and a heavier power arm having a strand receiving and separating guide mounted on the end thereof.
10. A selective trapping or cutting device for use in twisting, winding, spinning, doubling or like machines having twisting or draft means acting on a plurality of strands, comprising a tension post mounted transversely horizontally above said strands, a pivot pin mounted transversely below said post, a plurality of trapping or cutting arms one for each strand each pivotally mounted on said pivot pin extending upwardly and terminating in a trapping or cutting edge below said post adjacent its respective strand, a spring mounted on the rear surface of each arm to be normally spaced therefrom and bendable towards said surface, a plate of substantially the total width of said arms independently pivotally mounted on the same pivot pin pivotal to a position abutting each of said springs, a second pivot pin mounted transversely of said frame in rear of said first pivot pin and a guide lever for each strand pivotally mounted on said second pivot pin having a work arm projecting arcuately forwardly therefrom to abut said plate means and a heavier power arm having a strand receiving and separating guide mounted on the end thereof.
11. A selective trapping or cutting device for use in twisting, winding, spinning, doubling or like machines having twisting or draft means acting on two strands, comprising an inverted U-shaped frame mounted on said machine transversely in rear of said twisting or draft means having a central transverse slot therein over which said strands are adapted to pass and a tension post mounted on one side thereof to extend transversely horizontally over said slot above said strands, a pivot pin mounted transversely of said frame below said post, two trapping or cutting arms one for each strand, each pivotally mounted on said pivot pin extending upwardly through said frame transverse slot and terminating in a trapping or cutting edge below said post adjacent its respective strand limited in its rear pivotable movement by the rear edge of said transverse slot and in its forward pivotable movement by said post, a plate of substantially the total width of said arms independently pivotally mounted on the same pivot pin pivotal to a position abutting each of said arms having longitudinal pivot slots therein, a second pivot pin mounted transversely of said frame in rear of said first pivot pin and a pair of guide levers, each pivotally mounted on said second pivot pin each having a work arm projecting arcuately forwardly therefrom to abut said plate means and a heavier power arm having a strand receiving and separating guide mounted on the end thereof.
12. A selectivetrapping or cutting device for use in twisting, winding, spinning, doubling or like machines having twisting or draft means acting on two strands, comprising a tension post mounted transversely horizontally above said strands, a pivot pin mounted transversely below said post, two trapping or cutting arms, one for each strand, each pivotally mounted on said pivot pin extending. upwardly and terminating in a trapping or cutting edge below said post adjacent its respective strand, a plate of substantially the total width of said arms independently pivotally mounted on the same pivot pin pivotal to a position abutting each of said arms having longitudinal pivot slots therein, a second pivot pin mounted transversely of said frame in rear of said first pivot pin and a pair of guide levers, each pivotally mounted on said second pivot pin each having a work arm projecting arcuately forwardly therefrom to abut said plate means and a heavier power arm having a strand receiving and separating guide mounted on the end thereof.
