GEOMETRICAL' DEVICE Filed June 25, 1937 Patented Apr. 4, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 9 Claims.
This invention relates to geometrical devices for gauging angles and for aiding in the positioning of guiding edges. More particularly, the invention relates to an improved geometrical device for use with instrumentalities having ruling or guiding edges which will enable the instrumentalities to be positioned with the guiding or ruling edges in predetermined angular positions and which will enable angular measurements to ii) be made with accuracy when employing the ruling or guiding edges as reference planes.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved geometrical device for use in combination with instrumentalities having ruling or guiding edges such as rulers, triangles, squares and the like so that an instrumentality equipped with the improved device may be employed as a gauge, bevel, protractor, surface gauge, depth gauge, T- square, center gauge, joiner gauge, try-square,
inclinometer or the like.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved geometrical device of the character described which may be securely attached to instrumentalities such as rules, triangles, squares 25. and the like of all common thicknesses and which will eifectively grasp such instrumentalities without regard to their widths.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved geometrical device of the character described which is of simple construction and inexpensive to manufacture and which is Well adapted to be used efiiciently in a great variety of ways.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention is embodied in the arrangements and details of construction described and claimed hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein,
Figure l is a plan View of a geometrical device embodying the invention as used in connection with a rule or straight edge;
Figure 2 is a side View of the improved geometrical device together with a rule or straight edge, and
Figures 3 and 4 are plan views disclosing various ways of positioning the improved geometrical device when used in conjunction with straight edges,
The improved geometrical device for gauging angles and aiding in the positioning of guiding edges is indicated in the drawing by reference numeral 50. The device comprises a top portion H and a bottom portion l2 which are spaced apart and joined together along one side by side web I3 to form the body of the device. It is contemplated that the bifurcated construction of the improved device may be formed by constructing the upper and lower portions separately and securing them together in spaced relationshipalong one side to form a U-shaped cross section ,5 either with the use of screws or other securing means. However, it is preferred to form the portions in an integral bifurcated construction by employing a single piece of material and forming a slot or opening intermediate the top and bot- :10 tom of the body member so as to leave the side web 13, top portion II and bottom portion l2 in the general U-shaped cross sectional formation shown in Figures 1 and 2.
The improved device I0 is formed with edges A p16 and B at right angles to each other and with edge C in acute angular relationship with edge A. For purposes of illustration the edges A and C are formed at an angle 45 in the drawing although it is within the contemplation ofthis .2 invention to employ other acute angles between the two sides. This construction provides a triangular formation of edges A, B and C with the latter forming the longest side. As indicated in the drawing, edges C and B may be filmed together by a short edge D which is positioned opposite edge A and serves to form the device into a truncated member. Edge A exists along the side web I3 of the device and the interior channel side I4 is formed parallel to edge A so that a straight edge which abuts interior channel side l4 will lie in parallel relationship with respect to edge A. Due to the slotted or bifurcated construction of the device III, a relatively flat object may be placed in the channelway between the ,,3 top portion H and the bottom portion 1-2 which will rest against the interior channel side 14 of the side web I3. The interior channel side Hi terminates on edge B at point 2| and at point 20 on the opposite end. As is shown in the 1 figures, side portion I3 is cut away at l5 in order to form the point 2|).
From the description of the device II] it will be evident that a relatively flat member 25 existing in the channelway between the top and bottom portions of the device may be positioned about either point 20 or point 2| as fulcrum points so that the ruling or guiding edge 2'! of member 25 may be positioned in angular relationship with respect to difierent edges of the device I0. Spaced scale markings are provided along edges B andC and angle indicia is provided on the top portion ll adjacent the edges as is indicated by reference numerals 3| and 32. Apertures I6 and I1 existing in the top portion ll of the device are tapped, as is indicated by l9, to receive a screw member l8 which may be placed in either of the apertures depending upon the size and shape of the instrumentality in order to secure the device in place along an edge of the instrumentality. Screw member l8 may be rotated to cause the lower portion of the screw to engage and frictionally secure member 25 in a predetermined position.
Figures 3 and 4 are illustrative of the manner in which the improved device may be employed in conjunction with an instrumentality having a ruling edge, such as a 45 triangle 26. As shown in Figure 3, the triangle 26 has edges 28 and 29 formed at right angles and edge 30 which connects edges 28 and 29. Device ID is placed over an edge of the instrumentality and secured thereto by tightening the screw member l8. When an edge of the instrumentality is abutted against interior channel side I4 of the device, it may be oriented in various angular positions by selecting one of the devices edges as a reference plane. By rotating the edge about point 2!, as shown in Figure 3, or about point 26, as shown in Figure l, 2. wide range of angles may be obtained in reference to the orienting edges of the device. For example, Figure 3 represents the device in use with a 45 triangle and as indicated on the scale 3|, the device is positioned to form a 60 angle between edge 30 of the triangle and edge C of the device. Figure 4 represents the device adjusted to form a 30 angle between edge C and edge 3E! of the 45 triangle upon which it is mounted. It will be obvious from these examples that the device lfl may be secured in a plurality of positions to form a wide range of angles when using the various sides of the device as reference edges. It will be apparent that any appropriate graduations may be applied to the device depending upon the particular use which is contemplated. In view of the adaptability of the device to rulers, triangles, squares and the like it will be evident that the combination may readily be employed as a gauge, bevel, protractor and the like as well as a stop member for indicating predetermined lengths on straight edges.
Various modifications and embodiments of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, and it is desired that the appended claims shall cover all modifications and arrangements which come within the scope and spirit of the invention.
Having thus described certain embodiments of the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A geometrical device substantially triangular in form and substantially U-shaped in cross section having angle indicia adjacent at least one of the open sides.
2. A geometrical device comprising a body member substantially triangular in form having spaced upper and lower portions, means along one side of said body member for maintaining said portions in spaced relation and angle indicia adjacent at least one of the other sides of said body member. I
3. A geometrical device comprising a body member having an upper portion,'a lower portion spaced from said upper portion, a connecting web located adjacent one edge of the member and extending less than the length of said edge, an edge formed at right angles and an edge formed in obtuse angular relationship with respect to the aforementioned edge adjacent which said connecting web is located.
4. A geometrical device comprising a substantially triangular shaped body member having an upper portion, a lower portion spaced from said upper portion, a connecting web located adjacent one edge of the said member and extending less than the length of said edge, an edge formed at right angles and an edge formed in obtuse angular relationship with respect to the aforementioned edge adjacent which said connecting web is located and angle indicia adjacent at least one of the latter mentioned edges.
5. A geometrical device comprising a body member having an upper portioma lower portion spaced from said upper portion, a connecting web located adjacent one edge of the said mem ber, an edge formed at right angles and an edge formed in obtuse angular relationship with respect to the aforementioned edge adjacent which said connecting Web is located, angle indicia adjacent at least one of the latter mentioned edges and adjustable means associated with said body member for frictionally securing the device to a support.
6. A geometrical device comprising in combination a body member substantially triangular in form having spaced upper and lower portions, web means along one side thereof for maintaining said portions in spaced relation, an instrumentality having a guiding edge, said guiding edge of the instrumentality located between said spaced portions and extending outwardly therefrom, friction means for adjustably securing the instrumentality in place and angle indicia adjacent at least one edge of said member from which the guiding edge extends.

A geometrical device comprising in combination a body member substantially triangular in shape having an upper portion, a lower portion spaced from said upper portion, web means along a portion of one side of said member for maintaining said portions in spaced relation, an instrumentality having a guiding edge, said guiding edge of the instrumentality located between the spaced portions and extending outwardly therefrom, friction means for adjustably securing the member and said instrumentality and angle indicia adjacent a plurality of the edges of said member.
8. A geometrical device comprising a body member substantially triangular in form having an upper portion, a lower portion spaced from said upper portion, a connecting web located adjacent one edge of the member having an interior surface parallel to said edge, an edge formed at right angles and another edge formed in obtuse angular relationship with respect to said aforementioned edge, said connecting web extending from the edge of said member formed at right angles to a point spaced a distance from the edge of said member formed in obtuse angular relationship.
9. A geometrical device comprising in combination a member substantially triangular in form and substantially U-shaped in cross section, an
' instrumentality having a guiding edge, said guiding edge located within the U-shaped opening of said member, and means comprising a friction device cooperating with said member and instrumentality for securing the instrumentality in place.
