This invention relates to brushes and more particularly to fountain brushes.

An object of the invention is to provide a brush so constructed as to hold soap or the like in the head or body thereof, and having means whereby the soap suds may be distributed over the body or surface to be cleaned during the scrubbing of said body or surface; and the invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:

Figure 1 is a top plan view of the brush with the head or closure removed.

Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the brush.

Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view through the brush.

Figure 4 is a fragmentary detail sectional View showing the manner of securing the bristles to the body or head of the brush.

Referring to the drawing more in detail it will be seen that in accordance with the present invention my improved brush comprises a substantially rectangular head or body member 5 to one side 6 of which are secured in any conventional manner, such as through the medium of staples or fastening elements 1, bristles 8.

At the top side thereof, or the side opposite to the side 6 thereof the head or body 5 is open, and for said open side there is provided a slide closure 9.

The sides and one end of the head 5 are provided internally with the groove II] for accommodating the rabbeted edge ll of the closure 9. To facilitate sliding of the closure 9 to open and. close positions the latter is provided with a finger socket I 2 as shown.

The body or head 5 is of hollow construction to provide a chamber l3 that accommodates a bar of soap I4.

The soap I4 is in contact with the periphery of a roller l5 mounted on a shaft l6 suitably journalled within an opening l1 provided in the bristle equipped side of the body or head 5 as shown. The periphery of the roller I5 is covered with a sleeve of rubber or other suitable material.

To maintain the soap It, as it shifts back and forth within the chamber l3 in intimate contact with the periphery of the roller l5 there is provided a weight l8.

The weight l8 as shown is in the form of a rectangular rimmed plate of metal or other suitable material fitting conformably within a covering IQ of rubber or other suitable material provided therefor. The plate l9 accommodates within the c'onfines'of the rim or flange thereof the bar of soap l4 as shown in Fig. 3 serving, as is obvious, to maintain the soap M in contact with the periphery of the roller l5.

Also to protect the opposite end walls of the chamber l3, and to deaden the sound incident to the shifting of the soap from one end to the other of the head or body 5 said chamber l3 at said opposite ends thereof is lined with cushioning material of rubber or other suitable ma- 1 terial.

The bristles 8 adjacent the opening I! accommodate the roller l5 so that the periphery of the roller is slightly inwardly from the scrubbingsurface formed by the bristles 8 as shown in Fig. 3. 15 Obviously in using the brush with the soap l4 within the chamber 13 contact of the soap with the periphery of the roller l5 will result in the formation of suds which will be carried by the roller to the surface of the bristles 8 for appli- 20 cation to the body being scrubbed. Thus it will be seen that with this invention the soap is substantially automatically applied to the bristles of the brush to the end that application of soap to the brush is obtained without thought or attention on the part of the user. Thus the necessity of employing one hand for holding the brush and one hand for holding the soap is dispensed with.

It will also be understood that the brush may be used for scrubbing the body orfor cleaning surfaces such as floor surfaces and the like.

What is claimed is:

1. A brush comprising a hollow box like head provided on one side thereof with bristles, said brush also having an opening in said one side thereof, a roller rotatably supported in the opening and having portions extending above and below said side, a block of cleansing material located in the chamber formed by the hollow head and having a portion resting on the roller, said block being of smaller size than the chamber whereby the block is moved back and forth in the chamber by the roller as the roller rotates first in one direction and then in the other direction and a weight on the block for maintaining the block in contact with the roller, said weight moving with the block.

A brush comprising a hollow box like head provided on one side thereof with bristles, said brush also having an opening in said one side thereof, a horizontally arranged roller rotatably supported in the opening and extending transversely of the head and having portions extending above and below said side, a block of cleansing material located in the chamber formed by the hollow head and of less area than the chamher, said block having a portion resting on the roller whereby the block is moved back and forth in the chamber as the roller is rotated first in one direction and then in the other and a weight having a chamber in its underside receiving the upper portion of the block, said weight moving with the block.

A brush comprising a hollow box like head provided on one side thereof with bristles, said brush also having an opening in said one side thereof, a shaft journalled in said one side of the head and extending from one side to the other of said opening, a roller mounted on said shaft and accommodated within said opening, said head providing a chamber accommodating a block of soap therein, and-weight means within the chamber and resting on said soap for maintaining the soap in contact with the periphery of said roller, said weight being in the form of a rimmed plate having an outer covering of resilient material.

A brush comprising a hollow box like head provided on one side thereof with bristles, said brush also having an opening in said one side thereof, a shaft journalled in said one side of the head and extending from one side to the other of said opening, a roller mounted on said shaft and accommodated within said opening, said head providing a chamber accommodating a block of soap therein and weight means within the chamber and resting on said soap for maintaining the soap in contact with the periphery of said roller, said head having one side open for access to the interior of said chamber, and a slide closure at the open side of the head for said chamber, and said chamber at opposite ends thereof having the walls lined with resilient material, as and for the purpose specified.
