3 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in weft or filling replenishing looms of the bobbin-changing class.
An important object of the invention is to provide electrically actuated means to shift the latch or dog of the transferrer to the operative position for engagement with the bunter carried by the lay, when the filling is exhausted from the quill.
'11,: A further object of the invention is to provide electrical means of the above mentioned character, including contact-feelers, arranged to contact with a metallic sleeve or element mounted upon the quill, when the filling is exhausted,
15 the arrangement of the parts being such that the circuit for effecting the replenishing of the bobbin will not be closed if the shuttle comes to rest beyond defined limits.
A further object of the invention is to provide apparatus of the above mentioned character,
which is of simple construction, reliable in operation and may be installed upon a conventional loom such as the Draper loom, without materially altering the construction of the same.
o A further object of the invention is to provide M electrically operated contact-feelers, which will cause the apparatus to operate with a high degree of accuracy, eliminating the production of seconds, and the transfer of filled bobbins into the shuttle before the bobbin therein has the filling completely removed therefrom.
A further object of the invention is to provide a feeler which will not improperly actuate the transferrer, by engagement with the filling 35 on the quill and which will not actuate the transferrer until the filling has its last layer covering the contact element removed from the quill.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the fol- 40 lowing description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of apparatus embodying my invention, showing the same applied to a loom,

Figure 8 is a central vertical longitudinal section through the filling feeler slide, parts in elevation,
Figure 9 is a transverse section taken on line 99 of Figure 7, and, 10
Figure 10 is a side elevation of the transferrer and associated elements.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral Hi designates a loom as a whole, which may be a conventional Draper weft-replenishing loom of the bobbin-changing class. The bobbin replenishing means is not shown but is on the end of the loom remote from the end shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. The bobbin replenishing means may be of the type shown in the patent to H. A. Owen, 1,291,101. The numeral I4 is the transferrer, I5 is the fixed stud upon which the transferrer is pivotally mounted, and It the latch or dog of the transferrer. The numeral l'i designates the hunter carried by the lay which serves in the forward movement of the lay to engage with said latch or dog [6 when the latter is raised through the action of the weft detecting devices embodying the present invention, so that the hunter may transmit movement through the latch or the dog to the transferrer to actuate the transferrer to feed the leading bobbin or other weft carrier into the shuttle. The elements I4, [5, l6 and I! are the identical elements shown and described in Patent 1,291,101. The present invention resides in means to elevate to latch or dog I6, so that it will be engaged by the bunter ll.
The loom comprises a frame including a breast beam l8, and a lay including shuttle boxes I9 (on-e being shown), for receiving a shuttle 23, detachably holding a quill 2|. This quill is of the conventional type except that it is provided with a metal contact band 22, which is approximately one inch in length.
Mounted near and above breast beam I8 is my improved filling feeler slide, designated as a whole by the numeral 23. This slide is forked, providing spaced tines 24, receiving therebetween a vertically swinging pawl 25, pivoted to the same at one end, as shown at 26. This pawl is elevated by a retractile coil spring 26, attached thereto, and to a bolt 21, adjustable connected with an inverted U-shaped bridge 28, rigidly secured to the tines 24. The upward movement of the pawls 25 is limited by an adjustable stop 29, having screw-threaded engagement with an upstanding bracket 30, rigidly carriedby one tine 24. An inverted U-shaped lever 3| has a forked end 32, which straddles the bridge 28 and is pivoted thereto at 33, to swing in a vertical plane, and an adjustable bolt 34 is secured to the free end of the lever 3|, and is arranged above the pawl 25, to contact therewith, at a point suitably spaced from the pivot 26 of the pawl. The lever 3| is provided with an armature 35, arranged near and above electro-magnets 36, rigidly mounted upon a bracket 31, in turn rigidly secured to the bridge 28. It is thus seen that when the electro: magnets are energized, the lever 3| will move downwardly, and depress the pawl 25, in opposition to its spring 26'. The filling feeler slide 23 is horizontally arranged and partakes of rectilinear reciprocatory movements in a horizontal plane, and one time 24 has a depending extension 38, slidably supported by the usual filling motion stand 39, it being understoodthat the slide 23 is substituted for the conventional filling feeler slide. The filling feeler. slide 23 has a laterally extending horizontal rib 40, engaged by a stationary bracket. 4|, which prevents the filling feeler slide 23 moving upwardly and also preventing any tendency for it to move laterally toward the bracket 4|, while any lateral movement in the opposite direction would be prevented by the usual straddle bug. However, there is practically no tendency for the slide 23 to partake of lateral displacement. My improved filling feeler slide 23 is providedat one end with an apertured,
knuckle 42, aranged between apertured knuckles 43, Figure 1, and pivotally connected therewith, as shown at 44. These knuckles are formed upon the upper end of an upstanding vertically swinging lever or starting broad arm 45, Which is rigid- 1y mounted upon a rock-shaft 46, in turn suitably mounted upon the frame of the loom and extending to the opposite end of the loom, to actuate the means which raises the dog or latch I6, to be described. This means comprises a crank 41,
clamped to the rock-shaft 46, and having alever 46 clamped thereto, provided with a fork 49, re-
ceiving an extension56 carried by a vertically swinging link 5|, pivoted at'52. This link has a slot 53, to receive a pin 54, carried by an extension 55, depending from the dog or latch I6. It is thus seen that the clockwise turning movement of therock-shaft 46 will elevate the latch or dog I6, as is well known in the art. The rock-shaft is turned in the opposite direction by the usual spring.
The numeral 56 designates a filling cam follower dog or lever, rigidly attached to a coupling 51, in turn rigidly mounted upon'a rock-shaft 56, which is cam actuated in the conventional automatic filling'replenishing loom. The dog 56 is generally vertically arranged and carries a bolt 59 passing through selected openings '66 in a dog 6 I. This dog has 2. depending tail 62, arranged to engage with an adjustable stop bolt 63, carried by the filling cam follower dog or lever 56. By ma-' the pawl 25, when the pawl 25 is lowered. An
electrical contact-feeler is provided for coaction with'the' metallic sleeve 22 to closethe circuit'and energize the electro-magnet 36. This feeler com- 61, in turn rigidly secured to the breast beam I8. The casing 66 is formed of insulating material and is made in upper and lower twin casing sections 66. Each casing section is provided with a pair of longitudinal grooves 69, slidably receiving contact-feeler rods 16, made of metal, and provided at their inner ends with lateral extensions 1 I, arranged to engage shoulders 12, for limiting the outward movement of the feeler rods. The feeler rods are moved outwardly by retractile coil springs 12', having electrical connection therewith and With binding posts 13 and 14. The circuit is made through the springs 12, as will be explained. The contact feeler rods are positioned to be in proper alignment with the contact sleeve 22 of the quill, when the shuttle comes to rest at the proper position in the shuttle box, and when the lay moves toward the contact-feeler rods 10 with a depleted shuttle, thesefeelerrods electrically engage the sleeve 22, and the sleeve electrically connects the otherwise insulated feeler rods to close the'circuit. A Wire 15 leading from the positive pole of the source of current is electrically connected with thebinding post 13 and a wire 16 is electrically connected with the other binding .post 14 and-with one end of the winding of one electro-magnet 36, the magnets being connected in series, and awire 11 is connected with the free end of the winding of the other electro-magnet, and the wire 11 leads to the negative pole of the source of current. It is thus seen that when the sleeve 22 electrically connects the contact-feeler rods 16 that a circuit will be closed and the electro-magnets 33 energized and the lever 3| drawn downwardly, lowering the pawl 25 so that it is positioned in the path of travel of the tooth 65 of the dog 6|.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows:
While the filling is on the quill 2|, the filling serves to cover the contact sleeve 22 and insulate it from the contact feeler rods 16, and hence the circuit to energize the electro-magnets is not closed when the lay moves forwardly to bring the filling into engagement with the contaizt-feeler rods. The pawl 25 remains elevated, and is not engaged by the tooth 65 of the dog 6|, which is continuously rocking transversely of the frame of the loom, during the operation of the loom.
When the last layer of the filling is removed from feeler rods 16 engage the contact-sleeve 22 and a circuitis closed which will energize the electro-magnets 33. As soon as this occurs, the lever 3| is moved downwardly and the pawl depressed.
into the path of travel of the tooth 65 of the dog 6|, and the forward swinging movement of this dog is transmitted to the filling feeler slide 23, which in turn swings the starting broad arm or lever 45 and turns the rock-shaft 46. This rockshaft, through the medium of the connecting .means including the lever 48 will raise the latch or dog I6 so that it will be in the path of travel of the bunter I1, so that the action of the lay.
. may operate the transferrer I4, as is Wellknown in the art. An important feature of the invention is the fact that the contact-feeler rod 10 are placed relatively close together, and the contact sleeve 22 is relatively short, thereby preventing' operation of the transferrer, if theshuttle 20' should stop a considerable distance outside" of a proper limit. If this should occur, only one contact-feeler rod 10 would engage the metallic contact sleeve 22, the other contact-feeler rod engaging with the quill, ordinarily formed of wood, and hence the circuit would not be closed to energize electro-magnets, and the pawl 25 would not be lowered to be engaged by the tooth of the dog 6|, for the purpose explained.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
