IMPROVEMENT IN FEED-BOXES FOR PRlNTlNG-PRESSES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 214,797, dated April 29, 1879 application filed June 6, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDRIO (l. WEIR, of the city of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Boxes for Print ing-Presses; and I do hereby declare the fol lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention relates to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a ticketuumbering press, showing my feeding attachment. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the feedbox, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same.

My invention relates to that class of machines for numbering cards or tickets which prints and numbers the tickets and deposits them in a suitable receptacle at one operation; and it consists of an improved feed-box for holding a supply of cards or tickets prior to their being fed to the printing and numbering press, constructed as I will now proceed to describe.

In the accompanying drawings, F represents the feed-box, constructed, preferably, of rectangular form, and of proper size to receive a package of cards or tickets, G. Three sides of the box are formed of panes of I glass, for the purpose of preventing the displacement of the cards when the box lies in a recumbent position, and to enable the operator at any part of the room to see the cards and tell when the boX needs refilling, while the fourth side is left open, to permit the introduction of a supply of cards from time to time.

The top L of the box is provided with a slot or opening for the admission of the feeding-fingerof themachine; and oneof the closed sides, near the top, is slotted, as shown atm, to enable the said feeding-finger to slide out the cards one at a time and feed them to the machine.

The cards are held to the top of the box, to insure the proper action of the feeding-finger, by means of a follower, J, and spring I, arranged beneath them, as shown in Fig. 2.

In Fig. 1, I have shown the application of my invention to a ticket and card press, A, of the Hoe pattern.

B represents a shaft, mounted, by an arm, 0, upon the top of the press, and driven by belt and pulleys D from the counter-shaft thereof. This shaft B carries the feeding-finger E, which may be pointed or provided with a block of rubber, h, at its end, to takea secure hold upon the ticket.

The feed-box is supplied with cards through its open side, and is then mounted upon a suitable support, K, at the front of the press, so

as to present the opening in the top within the path of the feeding-finger.

When the machine is set in motion the feeding-finger sweeps through the opening in the top of the box,and,impinging slightlyagainst the top ticket, slides it from the box through the narrow side slot, m, and deposits it into a trough, N, from which it falls to the printing and numbering devices, and is then discharged from the machine in the usual manner. It requires but very slight prcssure'to feed the card; hence a mere touch of the finger as it rotates slips it easily through the side'slot.

From the transparency of the sides of the box the quantity of cards within can beascertained from any part of the room, so that where a number of machines are employed one person is enabled to attend to the supplying of cards to all without the necessity of stopping any of them.
