This invention relates to brassieres and particularly to strapless brassieres. I

With many types of low cut garments such as evening gowns, beach wear and the like it is impossible-to wear the ordinary type of brassiere because the supporting straps would be .exposed above the garment. Many attempts have been made to design brassieres for use with garments of this character but in each instance straps,

protruding tabs or supporting harnesses of some type were employed and it was impossible to use these brassieres with many kinds of garments.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a truly strapless brassiere which eliminates supporting straps or any other type of external supporting means.

A further object is the provision of a brassiere of the above character which will provide ample support to the wearer and will remain in proper position while in use.

For a fuller understanding of the invention reference should be had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a brassiere embodying my invention as it appears in use and showing in dotted lines the adjusting straps that may be employed while applying the brassire to the wearer;

Y My improved brassire is made of textile fabric and consists of a pair of breast pockets ll) preferably of the uplift type, connected together as shown. Each of the breast pockets is provided with curved upper and lower edges indicated at ll and i2 respectively, which taper towards the center of the brassiere to the relatively narrow connecting portion indicated at iii, and to points l l at the two ends of the brassiere. So as to provide additional support I prefer to provide a padding strip l5 shown most clearly in Fig. 4 in the lower portion of each pocket and I also preferably reenforce the lower portion with arcuate lines of stitching l6 which taper from the lower portion of each breastpocket toward the center thereof as shown most clearly in Figs. 1 and 3. g

My brassiere is of the strapless type and is held in position without any external supporting means. I accomplish the desired result by providing a strip or band of adhesive coating on the inner surface of the brassir around the marginal edges thereof. The adhesive employed should be of the same type employed on adhesive tape, which will firmly adhere to the body of the wearer but which nevertheless may be removed when desired.

I have found that the brassire is held in proper position without any discomfort and that it will aiford proper support by providing a relatively wide band or margin beneath each of the breast pockets and extending along the'lower edge of the brassiere for the entire width thereof as indicated by the letter a. At the top of each of the breast pockets a similar margin, which may be narrower,

is provided along the upper edge of the brassiere preferably for the entire length thereof as indicated by the letter Z). The inner surfaces of the band or margin a and the margin 2) are coated with the adhesive and in this way a strip of adhesive coating is provided on the inner surface of the brassiere around the entire marginal edges thereof.

In using the improved brassire it is applied to the body in the proper manner with the band or margin a lying flatly against the body below the breasts as shown. When the brassiere has been properly adjusted to the body so as to lie smoothly pressure is applied to the adhesive coated margins causing them to adhere to the body. The brassiere will then set firmly in position and will provide the desired support.

To facilitate the application of the brassiere to the body temporary adjusting straps may be applied to .the brassiere until it has been secured in the proper position and the straps may thereafter be removed. These straps may consist of a pair of shoulder straps 3 having hooks id at their forward edges which may be engaged in slits provided adjacent the upper curved edges l i of the two breast pockets It. At the back the, straps l8 connect with a back-encircling strap 20 having hooks 2| at its two ends which may engage slits formed adjacent the two pointed ends M of the brassiere. In using the temporary adjusting straps the hooks it and M are first applied to the brassiere as shown and the brassiere is then properly adjusted to the body of the wearer so as to lie smoothly. Pressure is then applied to the strip of adhesive coating around the marginal edges of the brassiere and after the brassiere has thus been firmly applied to the body of the wearer the temporary straps may be removed. The brassire will then be firmly held in position without any external supportmg means.

From the herein-described embodiment of my invention it will be appreciated that I have provided an improved strapless brassiere which eliminates all external supporting means, which provides the desired support to the wearer and which may be applied to the wearer in a simple and convenient manner.

It should be understood of course, that modifications' may be made in the herein illustrated and described embodiment of my invention without departing from the invention as set forth in the accompanying claims.

I claim:

1. A brassiere comprising a pair of panels adapted to provide a pair of pockets toreceive and support the breasts of the wearer, said panels being provided with a margin extending substantially around the pockets and adapted to ime the body of the wearer in embracing relation with the breasts and a coating of adhesive material applied to the inner surface of said margin to hold the brassiere in position on the body of the wearer. means connecting the panels together along the inner adjacent edges throughout the areas-2's full width thereof, the adhesively coated margin extending across the opposite ends of the connecting means, the portions of the adhesively coated margins at the ends of the connecting means extending towards each other for retaining the panels at such points in flat contact with the body.

2. A brassire comprising a pair of panels shaped to provide a pair of pockets to receive and S port the breasts of the wearer, connecting means between the inner edges of the panels, said panels being provided with a margin extending substantially around the pockets and across the connecting means and engaging the body of the wearer in embracing relation with the breasts and a coating of adhesive material applied to the inner surface of said margin to hold the brasslere throughout the periphery thereof in position on the body of the wearer, the adhesively coated margin where said margin crosses the connecting means aiding in retaining the panels in flat contact with the body along the connected inner edges.
