No. 214,714.' Patented April 22, 187.9.
INVENTUR: JL/ y BY ATTORNEYS;
N. PETERS. FNOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES SCHWARTZ, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOYS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 214,714, dated April 22, 1879; application filed July 3, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES SCHWARTZ, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Veneer Toys, of which the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved veneer toy; and Figs. 2 and 3 are a horizontal and a vertically-transverse section, respectively, on lines 00 m and 3 y, Fig. 1, of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to toys and fancy articles generally that are made of one or more layersof veneers,-and are colored, cut, and embossed, so as to receive a more plastic appearance; and the invention consists of toys that are cut out of veneers and embossed, and arranged, furthermore, with raised parts that are separately cut and embossed and united to the main part of the toy.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a toy, figure, or other article that is cut out of one or more layers of veneer of suitable thickness.
The uppermost or face layer of veneer may be first printed or painted in different colors, and then glued to as many stiffening layers as are desired, according to the size and strength of the article to be produced. After gluing, the layers are exposed to pressure until the glue is perfectly dry.
-The toy figure is then cut in dry state by means of a cutting and embossing die, whose cutting-edge corresponds to the exterior configuration of the toy, while the embossingedges correspond to the main lines or features that are desired to be raised, so that these main features are brought out in more plastic manner.
The layers of veneers are brought down on the cutting and embossing die by a plunger having a facing of soft or elastic material, the pieces of veneer registering by holes with pins of the dies. The cutting and embossing of the veneer is thus finished by one operation and an embossed toy obtained thereby.
If it is desired to bring out some parts, B, such as saddles, arms, weapons, 850,, in to more prominent relief, these parts may be printed, out, and embossed separately, but in exactly the same manner as the main part or body of the toy. These separate parts B are then secured by gluing or otherwise to the body of the toy, which may be depressed slightly for the same, for furnishing a more intimate and stronger connection.
The parts B may also extend beyond the main part of the toy, as in case of arms, weapons, &c.
A more finished toy may also be obtained by making two symmetrical right and left veneer-sections, and coloring, cutting, and embossing the same, as described, and finally gluing, riveting, or otherwise fastening these sections to each other at the edges, so as to form entire figures in this manner.
The veneer toys are fastened to a suitable base, 0, in any suitable manner. They may be pivoted at one point, asin the case of a horse, and thereby a variety of positions he obtained. Articulated toys and a large number of other articles may be thus manufactured of veneer, and their appearance greatly improved by the embossing of the same and by the addition of separate raised parts.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentw- A toy composed of two or more pieces of veneer cut and embossed to produce the de sired effect, and provided with an additional sheet of material as a backing or strengthening piece, substantially as shown and described.
CHARLES SOHVVARTZ.
