1 Claim.
This invention relates to an improvement in cigarette holders and aims to provide a device of this character which will not become soiled and cal for the smoker to write in between inhalations of the smoke without depositing the cigarette on an ash tray or other available support and picking it up each time it is used.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is extremely simple in its construction, susceptible of convenient and graceful use, and adapted for economical manufacture and this in quantities.
- pointed out in the appended claim, reference be- Other objects and advantages reside in certain novel features of the construction; arrange-.
ment and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly ing had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which:
' Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the manner of use of the device;
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation showing the invention as positioned when holding a cigarette; I Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in end elevation of the structure shown in Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view in side elevation looking at the opposite side of the structure from that viewed in Figure 2;
- Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 4 but showing the device when positioned to adapt the pencil to be supported in the usual manner in a pocket; and Figure 6 is a plan view of the structure when positioned for holding the cigarette.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral III ventional construction and which is equipped with a clip designated generally at I I.
-, the usual curved clamping members I2 which slidably embrace the pencil and are frictionally engaged therewith at any point along its length.
- gripping finger I3 is a clamping member or holding member designated generally at IQ. The
The clip II has holding member I4 has a laterally extending curved cigarette engaging portion I5 which is dimensioned, proportioned, and disposed to overlie the rubber or eraser I6 usually provided at one end of the pencil when the clip is appropriately positioned. The eraser I6, when one is provided, or the adjacent end of the pencil if not equipped with an eraser, affords a seat against which a cigarette C is adapted to engage. As shown in the drawing, the clip II may be adjusted to cause its cigarette engaging portion I5 to engage and hold the cigarette against its seat. The pencil then provides a staff or handle which may be grasped in the hand of the smoker in the manner illustrated in Figure 1.
The cigarette engaging portion I5 is of ringlike form in that it has an opening H which provides for the adjustment of the clip to the position shown in Figure 5 and hence its capacity for normal use in holding the pencil in the pocket.
With the construction described the smoking of the cigarette is facilitated and moreover, the construction is such that it will not become soiled or stained, that is to say, it does not require the use of a cleaner since deposit of saliva or tobacco juice on any portion thereof is precluded. The smoker grasping the shank of the pencil will not have his fingers soiled or stained and it is entirely practical to write with the pencil in between inhalations of the smoke of the cigarette. The tobacco user may thus enjoy the smoke and at the same time without the necessity of periodically laying his pencil down and picking it up.
While I have shown and described one construction in which the invention may be advantageously embodied, it is to be understood that the construction shown has been selected merely for the purpose of illustration or example and that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
The invention claimed is:
A cigarette holder of the character described comprising a staif, a clip having a curved portion in clamping engagement with the stafi and slidable therealong, one end of the staff constituting a seat for a cigarette positioned transversely of the stafi and with its axis substantially intersecting the axis of the staii, and a cigarette holding member interconnected with the clip and having laterally extending cigarette engaging spaced portions curved inva plane perpendicular to the plane of curvature of the clip and adapted to co-act with the seat for securing a cigarette in place thereon and adapted to be adjusted in surrounding relation about the stafi in any longitudinal position thereof on the stafi.
