` SANDWICH HOLDER Filed April 8J 1937 l I I INVENTOR. #Ufo/d C, HGH/e7 BY W M ATTORNEYS Patented Jan. 31, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFiCE SANDWICH HOLDER Application April 8, 1937, Serial No. 135,730
`2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in sandwich holders.
'Ihe main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a suitably shaped holder for sandwiches or other comestibles. whereby the same may be held in the hands for eating without the hands contacting the food and which affords protection to the user from drippings from the sandwich or comestible.
Second, to provide a holder of the type described which is simple in nature and inexpensive to manufacture so that it may be distributed gratis.
Third, to provide a holder of the type described in the form of a paper cup having provision whereby the same is expansible to accommodate sandwiches and other foods of various sizes and having further provision in the form of a notch of substantial size whereby access may be had to the sandwich or food for eating.
Objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, where- 1n:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view illustrating the article of the invention, a sandwich being indicated in dotted lines and the manner of using the holder being clearly evident.
Fig. 2 is a view in elevation illustrating details of the invention.
The present invention relates to a paper cup or holder designed to be used to facilitate the eating of sandwiches or other comestibles by shielding the food from the hands and also shielding the user from drippings from the sandwich. This greatly aids sanitation and cleanliness and protects the hands and clothing of the user. The structure of the article is simple in nature yet the same is a great convenience and unquestionably serves as a stimulant to increase business for sandwich or barbecue or other shops featuring the same.
Referring to the drawing, the reference numeral l broadly indicates the sandwich holder of the invention, consisting of a relatively deep cup-like holder preferably of parchmentized paper or paper otherwise rendered greaseproof and leakproof, the said holder having a bottom 2 and side and end walls 3, 4, respectively. The end walls are tapered and are formed in the general shape of an oval. This shape will accommodate sandwiches of shapes commonly on the market. However, it will be apparent that the contour of the holder may be varied as desired.
I preferably make the side walls 3 flat and, if desired, suitable printing such as advertising matter or other information may be impressed thereon. The end walls are fluted as indicated by the reference numeral 5 whereby the holder is rendered expansible to accommodate sandwiches cr other comestibles of various sizes and 5 to facilitate gripping.
The side walls 3 are provided with curved notches t cut in the top thereof for the purpose of providing access to the contents of the holder which is illustratedas a sandwich and indicated 10 in Fig, l by the reference numeral l.
Fig. 1 makes it clear how the article of the invention is intended to be used. Holders as described may be iilled with sandwiches prior to the sale of the same or may be i'llled as de- 15 livered to the customer. In either event, the holder will protect the food and the hands and prevent untidy and messy dripping and considerably facilitates eating, The notches 6 are of such size as to accommodate the mouth of the 20 user and the sandwich l' or other contents may be shifted and manipulated in the holder as desired until entirely consumed. In the event that lt is not desired to consume the entire sandwich, the holder forms a convenient means for wrapping and disposing of the unconsumed remainder.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in an embodiment which is very practical. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe other embodiments or adaptations as it is believed this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A disposable holder for sandwiches and other comestibles to facilitate the eating thereof, comprising a relatively7 deep one piece cup-like holder of thin, readily foldab-le parchment-like paper substantially oval in shape and having tapered walls and a bottom, the side walls being flat and the end walls being provided with relatively sharply Idefined flutes, said side walls having curved notches of substantial size at the free edge thereof whereby access is afforded to a sandwich or comestible in the holder.
2. A disposable holder for sandwiches and other comestibles to facilitate the eating thereof, comprising a relatively deep cup-like holder of thin, readily foldable and substantially leakproof paper having tapered side and end walls and a bottom, the side walls being flat and the end walls having relatively sharp flutes, said side walls having curved notches of substantial size at the free edge thereof whereby access is afforded to a sandwich or comestible in the holder.
