This invention relates to hydraulic jacks, and has for an object the provision of a new and improved device of this character.

The embodiment of the invention herein disclosed comprises a cast frame III of malleable metal, or the like, to permit slight weaving thereof, having identical side walls I I and I2 projecting upwardly to a peak, as indicated at I3, one end I4 of the side walls II and I2 being integrally connected by a tie member I5, and short of the I2 each merge into an elongated section I6 having an arcuate segment I'I provided with an flange I8 having holes I9 extending therethrough for a purpose hereinafter described. and the segments II terminate in a tie member which integrally connects the side walls II and I2. Numerous other tie members 2I are provided which integrally join together the side walls II and I2, forming a skeleton frame cast integrally in one piece. An axle 22 extends through the side walls II and I2 at the end I4 of the frame I9, and is provided at its ends with wheels 23 rotatably secured to the axle 22 by nuts 24; and secured by screws 25 to the elongated section I6 of each inwardly extending side wall II and I2 is a bracket 26 to which are mounted, in the usual manner, swivelwheels 2l providing means for moving the frame I0 to any desired direction.
Disposed between the side walls I I and I2 of 5 the frame I0 is a jack unit 35 comprising a onepiece casting having a cylinder 3'6 closed at one end by a partition wall 31 substantially intermediate the ends of the jack unit 35, and extending longitudinally of the cylinder 36, adjacent 10 the partition 3'I, is a reservoir 38 and a pump cylinder 39, the reservoir 38 being integrally arranged above the pump cylinder 39; and the jack unit is pivotally connected between the side walls II and I2 by spaced ears 40 integral with l5 one end of the reservoir 38, and the ears 40 are provided lwith apertures forpivotal engagement with a rod 4I xedly secured by nuts 42 to the side Walls II and I 2thus permitting the jack unit 35 and its associated parts to be swung up- 20 Wardly and downwardly between the side walls I I and I2.
Reciprocally mounted in the cylinder 36 is a ram 43 having a piston 44 at `its inner end, and the piston 44 embodies an annular ange 45 in- 25 tegral with the ram 43, short of the inner end thereof, and the flange 45 merges into a reduced integral solid stud 46A exteriorly threaded for the reception of a pilot4l which clamps an inverted cup-shaped packing member 48 against the 30 shoulder formed by' the ilange 45 and the reduced stud 46. The-pilot 41 has a reduced portion which engages the depending flange 49 of the packing member 48, and the depending flange 49 has its peripheral edge beveled and spaced from 35 the enlarged portion of the pilot 41, formingan annular recess 50 therebetween.l The pilot 41 is also provided with annularly spaced ports 5I which communicate with the recess 50, so that when fluid is forced into the cylinder 36, adjacent` 40 y the piston 44, it will pass through the ports 5I into the recess 50 and force the flange 49 into intimate contact with the cylinder 36.
The cylinder 36 is also provided witha lateral port 52 intersecting a by-pass 53vextending longi- 45 tudinally along the cylinder 3dB-communicating at one end with the reservoir 38, and the opposite end terminating at the outer extreme end of the cylinder 36, and the port 52 terminates at the outer surface of the cylinder 36, being closed by 50` a threaded plug 54.
The outer end of the cylinder screw-threaded to receive a 36 is internally correspondingly y threaded closu're 55 provided with a laterally exseating engagetending annular shoulder 56 for ment with a packing washer 51 interposed between the shoulder 56 and the outer extremity of the cylinder 36. The end of the ram 43, opposite the piston 44, extends through a centrally disposed aperture 58, formed by an annular depending flange 59 in the closure 55,and the flange 59 is disposed in intimate contact with the ram 43 so as to pilot the ram 43 when it is reciprocated therethrough. Leakage of fluid beyond the iiange 59 is prevented by means of a packing member 66 disposed within an internally screw-threaded recess '6I formed in the closure 55, and is held in sealing engagement with the ram threaded into the closure 55.
The outer end of the ram 43 has a flattened portion 63 apertured for the reception of a pin 64 xedly secured therein by means of a setscrew 65 threaded through the flattened portion 63 into contact with the pin 64, and the opposite ends of the pin 64 are pivotally accommodated by apertures 66 disposed in inwardly extending spaced trunnions 61 integral with the walls 66 and 69 of a one-piece casting 16, disposed between the side walls I| and I2 of the frame I6.
The walls 68 and 69 of the casting 16 are triy angular in transverse section and are integrally connected by a plurality of tie members, as indicated at 1I, and one apex, as indicated at 12, is pivotally connected to a rod 13 disposed between the apexes I3 of the walls Il and |2 and secured to the walls II and I2 by nuts 14. The other apex, as indicated at 15, of the side walls 68 and 69 has interposed therebetween a saddle support 16, provided at one end with a cylindrical portion 11 bored out for pivotal connection with a pin 16 extending therethrough, and the pin 18 terminates in apertures disposed in the side walls 66 and 69, the pin 18 being rigidly ailixed therein by set-screws 19 threaded through the side walls 68 and 69 into contact with the pin 18. Integral with the cylindrical portion 11 and inclined downwardly therefrom is a pair of lever arms 26 each having at its lower end a trunnion 66, apertured for pivotal engagement with bolts 6| each extending through one of the trunnions 86, the heads of the bolts 8| being each secured in correspondingly shaped bores in one end of balancing links 82 and 83, the opposite ends of which are pivotally secured by means of bolts 84 to the side walls and I2 of the frame I6. Fluid under pressure is supplied to the cylinder 36 from the reservoir 36 by means-of a pump, indicated as an entirety at 96, and cornprises the pump cylinder 39 cast integrally with the lower side wall of the reservoir 38, and which communicates at its inner end with a bore 9| opening at the inner end of the cylinder 36, having a valve seat 92 for the accommodation of a ball valve 93 held normally closed by a spring 94 interposed between the ball valve 93 and a. removable spider member 95 threaded into the bore 9| at the end opening into the cylinder 36. The bore 9|v also communicates with an intersecting vertically extending bore 96 leading to the interior of the reservoir'36, having a valve seat 91 for the accommodationvof a ball valve 98, held normally closed by a spring 99 interposed between the ball valve 96 and a removable 43 by a nut 62v permitting plug |66 threaded into the outer end of the bore 96 in the lower surface of the casting 6.
To prevent foreign matter contained in the fluid in the reservoir 38 from lodging in the valve seats 92 and 91, I provide a screen |6I elevated with respect to the bottom of the reservoir 36, and secured by means of screws |62 within the reservoir 38 over the reservoir outlet to the bore 6|. The upper wall |63 of the reservoir 36 is provided with a removable cover |64, whereby Reciprocally mounted in the pump cylinder 39 is a plunger |65 provided at its inner end with a packing |66 held in position by a screw |61, and the outer end of the plunger |65 extends through a gland nut |66 threaded into the pump cylinder 39, compressing a packing member |69 about` the plunger |65 in iluid sealing relation. The outer extremity of the plunger |65 is apertured to pivotally accommodate a pin II6, the opposite. ends of which are each pivotally connected to one end of a pair of links II2, the opposite ends of the links ||2 being pivotally connected by means of bolts ||3, to the extreme end oi the furcated portions |I4 of a forked handle support ||5. The furcated portions ||4 are enlarged transversely short `of the ends thereof, each being provided in the enlarged portion with a bore ||6 for the accommodation of a bushing I|1 flanged at its outer end to bear against the surface of the furcated portions II4, and the bushings II1 are each interiorly threaded for the reception of a bolt I|6 extending through the elongated section I6 of the side walls and |2, the furcated portions ||4 tl'iusv being rotatable about the bushings ||1, so that oscillatory movement of the handle support II5 and its associated parts causes reciprocatory movement of the pump plunger |65. The stem portion |26 of the handle support |I5 is interiorly threaded for the reception of an elongated tubular pump handle |2I terminating in a transverse hand grip |22, whereby the pump handle |2I may be oscillated. A
The escape of iiuid from the cylinder 36 is controlled by means of a needle valve |25 partially disposed in the reservoir 36, and the inner end of the needle valve |25 nts within a bore |26 extending through the partition 31 for establishing communication between the interior of the cylinder 36 and the reservoir 36 when the valve ,|25 is unseated. The outer end of the valve |25 extends through a boss |21 yformed interiorly of the wall of the reservoir 36, and through a packing member |28 and a gland nut |29 provided with an external thread for threaded reception in to the boss |21, and also threaded interiorly for engagement with a correspondingly threaded portion |36 of the needle valve |25 so that when it is desired to allow the ram 43 to enter the cylinderv 36 from an extended position, the valve |25 is unscrewed, which moves it axially, thus retracting the valve |25 from engagement with the bore |26 and the fluid coniined under pressure within the cylinder 36 to escape back to the reservoir 36.
In order to rotate the point remote therefrom, I provide a universal connection, as indicated at I3I, one link |32 having one end secured to the extreme outer end of the needle valve |25, and the other end to a link |33 -forming part of another universal needle valve |25 at a access may be had to the interior of the reservoir connection indicated at |34, and which is conn nected to a link |35v having threaded thereon a collar |36 for adjusting the length of the link |35 threaded into a valve rod |31 guided at its lower end by a nut |38, threaded into the lower end of the pump handle |2|, and the valve rod |31 extends through the pump handle |2| beyond the hand grip |22, terminating in a knob |40 adjacent the hand grip |22. By rotating the knob |40, the valve rod |31 is rotated, which to be inserted in the apertures I9 of the arcuate segment |1, and the opposite ends of the pins 43 are rigidly secured in a bracket |44 fixedly attached to the lower end of a sleeve |45 slidably disposed about the pump handle |2|. And the pins |43 are normally maintained in a retracted position with respect to the holes I8 by means of a spring |46 interposed between the brackets |4| and |44 about the locking pins |43. The upper end of the sleeve |45 is loosely embraced by a collar |41 integral with a locking cam |48 having an inclined surface |49 normally in juxtaposition with a like contoured surface |50 of a cam bracket |5| fixedly secured to the pump handle |2|, and the locking cam |48 is provided with a handle |52 to rotate the cam |48 with respect to the cam bracket |5| and the sleeve |45, causing downward movement, of the sleeve |45 and the bracket |44, placing the locking pins |43 in contact with the flanges |8, and the pins |43 are brought into coincidence with any of the apertures I9 by movement o the pump handle |2|, thus the pump handle |2| and its associated parts can be rigidly locked in a plurality of operative positions.
In operation, assuming the saddle 85 to be in lowered position, fluid is forced into the cylinder 36 by vertical oscillation of the handle |2|, the oscillatory movements being transmitted through the furcated portions ||4 of the handle suppo'rt ||5, and thence to the links ||2 connected to the pump plunger |05, which moves outwardly when the handle |2| is moved upwardly, and unseats the ball valve 98, permitting fluid to pass from the reservoir 38 into the bore 9|, and upon downward movement of the handle |2| the pump plunger |05 movesinwardly of the cylinder 39, forcing the fluid in the bore 9| to seat the ball valve 98 and to unseat the ball valve 93, which permits the entrance of fluid under pressure into the cylinder 36 adjacent the piston 44. Such fluid entering the cylinder 36 forces the ram 43 outwardly of the cylinder 36, and the ram 43 rotates the elevatable member 10 about the rod 13, effecting elevation of the saddle 85, which is maintained in a horizontal position during elevation to any position by the balancing links 82 and 83, pivoted to the saddle 85 and the side Walls and I2 of the frame l0. The jack unit 35, which includes the cylinder 36, reservoir 38 and pump cylinder 39, also os cillates about the rod 4| as the elevatable member 10 is rotated; the jack unit 35 being movable in an arcuate line to allow arcuate movement of the elevatable member 10. When the saddle 85 has been raised to the desired height,
it is locked in such elevated position by rotating the locking cam |48, which causes engagement of the locking pins |43 with the cooperating apertures I3. When the ram 43 has reached the limit of its outward movement, the piston 44 uncovers the port 52 and fluid may escape through `the by-pass 53 to the reservoir 38, thus automatically arresting outward movement of the ram 43 and also upward movement of the saddle 85. The needle valve |25 is moved to open position by rotating the knob |40, which in turn rotates the universal connections |3| and |34 which axially displace the valve |25, permitting return of the iluid from within the cylinder 36 adjacent the piston 44 into the reservoir 38 land consequent lowering of the saddle 85. Oscillation of the handle |2| does not affect the operation of the needle valve |25 because of the universal connections |3| and |34, and the needle valve |25 may be operated when the handle |2| is in locked position.
It will be apparent that I have provided a jack wherein the parts necessary to operate the jack are close to each other, the release valve |25 having its cooperating parts extending through the tubular pump handle |2|, and its operative knob |40 adjacent the hand grip |22, and the locking cam |48 located on the pump handle |2|.
It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the embodiment herein disclosed accomplishes at least the principal objects of the invention, and includes advantages other than those herein disclosed, and that various changes and modifications maybe made without departing from the spirit of the invention; and accordingly the embodiment herein disclosed is illustrative only and the invention is not limited thereto.
I claim:
l. A hydraulic jack, comprising: an elongated i rame having side members of appreciable height and cross members extending between the top and bottom edges of said side members 'and 1ntegrally formed therewith, said frame being made up from an integral casting of malleablemetal,
and said side members having integral spaced extensions projecting beyond the rearmost cross member, and each of said extensions ,provided with an angular flange having spaced recesses therein, and the front and rear portions of said frame carrying rollers; `a lever hai-ing integrally formed side and cross members and carrying a supporting member adjacent one end, and'pivotally carried by said frame adjacent 'its opposite end; a hydraulic unit including a pump cylinder and reservoir vertically aligned with said pump cylinder, and a ram cylinder longitudinally aligned with respect to said reservoir and pump cylinder, and a ram in said ram cylinder having its outer end pivotallyconnected to said lever at a point below the point of connection of said lever with said frame, andl said hydraulic unit being pivotally connected to said frame at a higher level than the pivotal connection of said ram; valve means `effective to lwithdraw fluid from said reservoir and admit the same to said ram cylinder when said pump is operated; a hollow operating member having'a transverse hand-piece, said member being pivoted to said frame, having a crank, and linkage connecting said crank to the piston of said pump for operating the latter, said member carrying spring pressed pins adapted to bear on said -frame flanges and selectively engageable with the recesses in said flanges; a rotatable relief valve for said ram cylinder; and a rod extendingthrough said operating member, and connected* with said handpiece said rod having a universal connection with said rotatable valve.
2.. A hydraulic jack, comprising; an elongated frame havinglside members of appreciable height and cross members extending between the top and bottom edges of said side members and integrally formed therewith, said frame being made up from an integral casting of malleable metal, and said side members having integral spaced extensions projecting beyond the rearmost cross member, -and at least one of said extensions provided with an angularange having spaced recesses therein; a lever having a supporting platform adjacent one end, and pivotally carried by said frame adjacent its opposite end; a hydraulic unit carried by said frame, including a pump cylinder, a reservoir, a ram cylinder, and a ram having its outer end pivotally connected to said lever at a point to one side of the point of connection of said lever with said frame; valve means effective to withdraw fluid from said reservoir and admit the same to said ram cylinder when said pump is operated; and an operating member pivoted to said frame, having means connecting said operating member to the piston of said pump for operating the same, said operating member carrying a spring pressed pin adapted to bear on said flange and selectively engageable with said recesses in said flange.

A hydraulic jack, comprising: an elongated frame having side members of appreciable height and cross members extending between the top and bottom edges of said side members and integrally formed therewith, said frame being made up from an integral casting; a lever having a supporting platform adjacent one end, and pivotally carried by said frame adjacent its opposite end; a hydraulic unit comprising a casting, including a pump cylinder, a reservoir, and a ram cylinder, and having a ram in said ram cylinder, with its outer end pivotally connected to said lever at a point to Aone side of the point of connection of said lever with said frame, said casting being pivotally connected to said frame at a higher level than the pivotal connection of said ram; valve means carried by said casting, and effective to withdraw fluid from said reservoir, and to admit the same to said ram cylinder when said pump is operated; arid an operating member pivoted to said frame, having a crank, and linkage connecting said `crank to the piston of said pump for operating the same.
4. A hydraulic jack, comprising: an elongated frame having side members of appreciable height and cross members extending between the top and bottom edges of said side members and integrally formed therewith, said frame being made up from an integral casting; a lever having a supporting platform adjacent one end, and pivotally carried by said frame adjacent its opposite end; a hydraulic unit including a pump cylinder, a reservoir, a ram cylinder, and a ram in said ram cylinder having its outer end pivotally connected to said lever at a point to one side of the point of connection of said lever with said frame, and said hydraulic unit being pivotally connected to said frame; valve means eiective to withdraw uid from said reservoir and admit the same to said ram cylinder when said pump is operated; a hollow operating member having a hand-piece, said memberibeing pivoted to said frame, and having a crank, and linkage connecting said crank to the piston of said pump for operating the same; a relief valve for said ram cylinder: and valve operating means extending through said operating member and connected with said hand-piece, said means having a universal connection with said relief valve.

A hydraulic jack, comprising: an elongated frame; a lever having a supporting platform adjacent one end, and pivotally carried by said frame adjacent its opposite end; a hydraulic unit including a pump cylinder, a reservoir, and a ram cylinder, and a ram in said ram cylinder having its outer end pivotally connected to said lever at a point to one side of the point of connection of said lever with said frame, and said hydraulic unit being pivotally connected to said frame; valve means effective to withdraw uid from said reservoir and admit the same to said ram cylinder when said pump is operated; a hollow operating member having a hand-piece, said operating member being pivoted to said frame, having means connecting said operating member to the piston of said pump for operating the same; a rotatable relief valve for said ram cylinder; and operating means extending along said operating member, and connected with said hand-piece, said means having a universal connection with said relief valve.

A hydraulic jack, comprising: an elongated frame; lever means having a supporting platform adjacent one end, and having a.pivotal connection with .said frame adjacent its opposite end; hydraulic unit means, including a pump cylinder and piston, a reservoir, and ram cylinder, and ram means in said ram cylinder, one of said means being pivotally connected to said frame and the other of said means being pivotally connected to said lever means at one side of its pivotal connection with said frame to eiect operating movements of said lever means when said ram means is operated; said pump cylinder and said reservoir, being disposed side by side integral with, and substantially longitudinally in line withsaid ram cylinder; and means for operating said pump to withdraw fluid from said reservoir and to introduce said fluid intosaid ram cylinder to operate said ram means.

A hydraulic jack, comprising: an elongated frame; lever means having a supporting platform adjacent one end, and having a pivotal connection with said frame adjacent its opposite end; hydraulic unit means, including a pump cylinder and piston, a reservoir, and ram cylinder, and ram means in said ram cylinder, one of said means being pivotally connected to said frame `and the other of said means being pivotally` connected to said lever means at one side of its pivotal connection with said frame to effect operating movements of said lever meansvwhen said ram means is operated; said pump cylinder and said reservoir being disposed side by side and substantially longitudinally in line with said ram cylinder; valve means controlling inlet of iluid to said ram cylinder; a screen for screening the fluid entering said valve means; said reservoir having a illling opening, normally closed by a detachable closure, said opening being laterally in line with said screen to give access to said screen as well as to the interior of said reservoir.

A hydraulic jack, comprising; an elongated frame; lever means having a supporting platform adjacent one end, and having a pivotal connection with said frame adjacent its opposite end; hydraulic unit means, including a pump, a reservoir, and a ram cylinder, and ram means in said ram cylinder, one of said means being pivotally connected to said frame and the other of said means being pivotally connected to said lever means at one side of its pivotal connection with said frame to effect operating movements o1' said lever means when said ram means is operated; said pump and said reservoir being disposed side by side integral with, and substantially longitudinally in line with said ram cylinder, said ram cylinder having a channel communicating with said reservoir, .extending longitudinally therealong, and having'a laterally disposed relief duct communicating with said channel and with the interior of said ram cylinder; and means eiIective to withdraw iluid from said reservoir and to introduce the same into said ram-cylinder when said pump is operated to operate said ram.

A hydraulic jack, comprising: an elongated frame; lever means having a supporting platform adjacent one end, and having a pivotal connection with said frame adjacent its opposite end; hydraulic unit means, including a pump, a reservoir, and ram cylinder, and ram means in said ram cylinder, one of said means being pivotally connected to said frame and the other oi' said means being pivotally connected to said lever means at one side of its pivotal connection with said frame to effect operating movements of said lever means when said ram means is operated; said pump and said reservoir being disposed side by side integral with and substantially longitudinally in line with said ram cylinder; valve means for effecting Withdrawal of iiuid from said reservoir and introduction of the same into said ram cylinder when said pump is operated; said ram cylinder having a relief port communicating with said reservoir; and a needle valve extending through said reservoir for controlling said port, said needle valve being accessible for operation at the rear of said reservoir.

A hydraulic jack, comprising: an elongated frame; lever means having a supporting platform adjacent one end, and having a pivotal connection with said frame adjacent its opposite end; hydraulic unit means, including a pump, a reserconnected to said frame and the other of said means being pivotally connectedto said lever means at one side of its pivotal connection with said frame to eiect operating movements of said lever means when said ram means is operated; said pump and said reservoir being disposed side by side integralwith, and substantially longitudinally in line with said 'ram cylinder; valve means for effecting withdrawal of fluid from said reservoir and introduction of the same into said ram cylinder when said pump is operated; said ram cylinder having a relief port communicating with said reservoir; a needlevalve extending through said reservoir for controlling said port, said needle valve being accessible for operation at the rear of said reservoir; and means for operating said pump, said means carrying mechanism by which the position of said needle valve may be controlled.

A hydraulic jack, comprising: an elongated frame; lever means having a supporting platform adjacent one end, and having a pivotal connection with said frame adjacent its opposite end; hydraulic unit means, including a pump, having a pump cylinder and piston, a reservoir, and ram cylinder, and ram means in said ram cylinder, one of said means being pivotally connected to said frame and the other of said means being pivotally connected to said lever means at one side of its pivotal connection with said frame, to effect operating movements of said lever means when said ram means is operated; said pump cylinder, and said reservoir, and said ram cylinder, comprising a single casting, recessed to dispose the pump cylinder longitudinally in line with one side of the ram cylinder, and v`to form the reservoir longitudinally in line with an opposed side of said ram cylinder; and means for operating Said pump to Withdraw uid from said reservoir, and to introduce said fluid to said rain cylinder to operate said ram means.
