' 4 Claims. (01.139-208) This invention relates to a loom shuttle and more particularly to means for supporting a particular type of bobbin or other thread carry-- ing member in thread delivery position within the shuttle body.
One object of the invention is the provision of means for supporting and retaining a flattened bobbin of substantially elliptical cross-section or one provided with a transversely elliptical spindle receiving recess in thread delivery position within a shuttle while permitting its removal or replacement to be accomplished readily when desired.
Another object of the invention is'the provision in a device of this character of a spindle member adapted to fit within a thread carrying member of the character described or one having a transversely elliptical spindle receiving recess and provided with means for engaging resiliently the inner wall of the recess in the thread carrying member at points located substantially on the major axis of the ellipse.
A further object of the invention is the pro-.
vision of a spindle member for the purpose set forth having enlarged portions located adjacent to the shoulder thereof fitting Within the base of a bobbin and conforming substantially with-the shape of the inner surface thereof.
Another object of theinvention is the pro- 9 vision in a device of this character of a spindle member having a blade portion fitting within a flattened tubular thread carrying. member and means adapted for engagement with. a narrow base flange on the threadcarrying memberfor retaining it positively in position on the spindle member until moved into doffing position.
Other objects and advantages of this invention relate to various improved details of construction and novel arrangements of the parts as will be more fully set forth in the detailed description to follow. In the embodiment of the invention illustrated herewith I designates a loom shuttle provided with an elongated recess 2 for receiving a thread carrying member3 and having a pin 4 extending therethrough for supporting a spindle 5 upon which the thread carrying member 3 is mounted.
In the weaving of certain types of thread such for example as silk, rayon, and the like, it is found desirable to employ a thread carrying member of bobbin 3 which is flattened substantially throughout its longitudinal extent to provide a tubular body of substantially elliptical cross-section. Conveniently, the thread carrying member of bobbin 3 may be formed from pressed fiber-board or the like throughout its length, and it may be provided with an outer shell 6 of thin metal fitted therearound and located adjacent to the base thereof and having an outturned flange I formed thereon and extending outwardly of the thread carrying member adjacent to the base thereof. 1
In order suitably to support a thread carrying member of this type within the recess formed in the shuttle body there is provided a spindle 5 having a base portion 8 provided with a recess 9 for. receiving thepin 4 and having a heel l2 adapted tobe engaged by the resilient plate I 4, which is secured to the shuttle body by a screw or other fastening means IS. The spindle member 5 may be provided with a shoulder l6 located adjacent to the base thereof and has a blade portion which comprises opposed arms I! having outwardly bowed'portions I 8 located intermediate of their ends and in substantial opposition with each other. The opposed arms I! are separated from each other at their free ends' in thisl form of the spindle structure, as indicated at 9.
The shoulder 16 may be substantially elliptical in form and is provided with lugs 20, located adjacent to the base of the blade portion of the spindle, which are so" shaped as to be adapted to fit closely within opposite sides of the opening at the. baseof the thread carrying'member 3 to assist in holding the thread carrying member against any rotative movement relative to the spindle 5. The outwardly bowed portions l8 of the arm may be located in substantially opposed relation and are preferably of a somewhat resilient character and bowed outwardly to a sufiicient extent to engage closely with portions of opposite sides of the inner wall of the thread carrying member 3 intermediate the ends of the thread carrying member and at points located at or adjacent to opposite ends of the major diameter of the elliptical cross-section of the thread carrying member, or at points on the inner wall of the thread carrying member adjacent to its areas of greatest transverse curvature.
A retaining plate 2| is carried by the shuttle body and located forwardly of the pin 4 a suitable distance to engage a considerable portion of the flange 1 at the base of the thread carrying member 3 when the thread carrying member is in thread delivering position within the shuttle. The retaining plate 2| has a recess formed in one side thereof, the lower portion 22 thereof being shaped to receive and conform substantially with the transverse contour of one of the flattened sides of the thread carrying member 3, while the upper portion 23 of the recess is widened out to permit the flange I carried by the base of the thread carrying member to move thereacross without damaging contact with the plate 2| in the movement of the spindle 5 to and from doffing position.
The modified form of spindle member 24 shown in Fig. 3 or" the drawing comprises a base portion 8 provided with a recess 9 for receiving the pin 4 and a heel portion I2, as in the spindle 5 previously described. A shoulder 25 may be provided for engagement with the base of the thread receiving member. Portions of opposite sides of the shoulder 25 located along the major axis thereof are struck inwardly to form lugs 29 of such shape and size as to fit substantially closely within opposite sides of the opening at the base of thethread carrying member 3 and assist in holding the thread carrying member 3 against any rotative movement relative to the spindle 5. The blade 21 of the spindle 24 is divided throughout a portion of its length only to form opposed separated sides which are bowed outwardly from each other as at 28 for resilient clamping engagement with the inner wall of the thread carrying member 3 at points located substantially on the major axis of the elliptical cross-section thereof.
The modified form of spindle member 30, shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing, is similar in all respects to those previously described with respect to the base 8, heel portion l2 and recess 9. A shoulder 3! may be provided for engagement with the base portion of the thread carrying member 3. The blade portion of this form of spindle comprises a central flat longitudinally extending blade 32 having relatively narrow opposed lateral fins 33 located upon or extending along the opposite side edges of the flattened blade which fins may be of a resilient character and may be attached to or formed integral with the free end of the central longitudinal blade 32 at opposite sides thereof, and each may be attached to the shoulder 3| at its opposite end. The lateral fins 33 may or may not have portions thereof outwardly bowed from the central blade portion 32, and may be so attached to or united with either the central portion 32 of the blade or the shoulder 3| as to fit substantially closely within the oblong opening at the base of the thread carrying member 3. In any case they engage clampingly the inner wall of the thread carrying member 3 at opposite sides and at points located substantially upon the major axis of its elliptical cross-section to hold the same firmly against any turning movement relative to the spindle.
The shape of the laterally positioned fins 33 may be varied as desired to provide for a greater or less extended contact with the interior wall of the thread receiving member, but in the form shown they are shaped to provide for contact with the interior wall of the thread carrying member throughout a substantial portion of its longitudinal extent.
In that form of spindle shown in Fig. 7 of the drawing, the blade portion may be similar in all respects to the blade portion of the spindle 5 as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, and it is provided with a shoulder |B similar to that shown in Fig. 2. The base portion 35 may be circular in cross-section and provided with a reduced holder engaging portion 36 from which extends a reduced threaded end 31. The reduced holder engaging portion 36 and threaded end 31 are adapted for operative engagement with the spindle holder portion of a rotatable shaft forming part of a winding machine structure, and the spindle shown is adapted to provide a support for a thread carrying member of a type similar to that shown herein, whereby it may be supported in suitable position on a winding machine to receive the winding of thread prior toits insertion in the shuttle.
It will be understood that in the operation of the mechanism shown and described, the flattened thread carrying member is preferably positioned within the recess of the shuttle body so that the major axis of its transverse cross-section is substantially horizontal to provide for a relatively considerable amount of weft thread being placed thereon without bringing the same sufficiently high with respect to the top of the shuttle to interfere with its operation or subject the thread to injury.
In each form of spindle shown in the drawing, pressure is exerted upon or contact is made with the inner wall of the thread carrying member by portions of the spindle blade located adjacent to its edges of greatest lateral extent and at points adjacent to or upon the major axis of the elliptical cross-section of the thread carrying member to engage and hold the member firmly in position relative to the spindle.
The base flange I of the thread carrying member is substantially elliptical in form corresponding with the cross-sectional shape of the thread carrying member, and one of the sides of the thread carrying member 3 opposed to the major axis thereof fits substantially within the lower portion 22 of the recess in the retaining plate 2| to locate the base flange 1 in substantial engagement with the retaining plate, whereby the thread carrying member may be held in position upon the spindle when the thread carrying member is in thread delivery position within the shuttle body. In the upper widened portion 23 of the recess in the retaining plate 2|, the recess is widened sufiiciently to permit passage therethrough readily by the base flange 1 of the thread carrying member, in the movement of the spindle to and from dofiing position, without injury to the base flange through contact with the recessed edge of the retaining plate.
The lugs 20 of the spindle member 5, and lugs 2t of the spindle member 24 may fit substantially closely within the open end of the recess in the thread carrying member at points coinciding substantially with its greatest diameter to assist the resilient engaging portions of the sides in holding the member in position on the spindle. In the case of the spindle member 30 the lateral fins 33 may extend substantially to the shoulder 3| and thus fit substantially closely within the open end of the thread carrying member to provide a relatively long gripping engagement with the inner surface of the thread carrying member and hold it securely in place on the spindle,
What I claim is:
1. In a loom shuttle provided with a recess for receiving a thread carrying member, an elongated, flattened, tubular thread carrying member the wall of which is of substantially elliptical cross-section, a spindle member pivotally mounted in the shuttle body for movement into said recess or into position outwardly thereof, said spindle member having a blade comprising opposed resilient portions projecting outwardly laterally from the longitudinal axis of the blade at substantially right angles to its path of pivotal movement, and a base plate carried by the blade and extending transversely thereof provided with oppositely positioned lugs extending outwardly from that face of said plate adjacent to said thread carrying member and each located in substantial longitudinal alignment with one of said outwardly projecting portions, whereby said outwardly projecting portions and lugs will engage the inner wall of said thread carrying member at spaced points located adjacent to the maximum cross-sectional diameter thereof for supporting the same against rotation on the spindle member.
2. In a loom shuttle structure, the combination with a permanently shaped, tapering, tubular thread carrying shell of substantially elliptical cross-section throughout its extent, of an elongated, flattened spindle member provided with opposed, outwardly projecting portions located substantially upon the major transverse axis of the spindle member and engaging resiliently the inner wall of said thread carrying shell at points coinciding substantially with its areas of maximum transverse curvature, and pposed shell engaging portions spaced from said first named portions longitudinally of said spindle member and located substantially upon the major transverse axis of the spindle engageable with the inner wall of said shell in spaced aligned relation with said first named portions to hold the shell against rotation relative to the spindle member.
3. In a loom shuttle of the character described, the combination with a permanently shaped, tapering, tubular thread carrying member of elliptical cross section of a spindle member provided with a central, longitudinally extending blade portion having laterally positioned elements located at opposite sides of the blade portion and spaced therefrom throughout portions of their lengths and having their external edges tapering outwardly from the base towards the free end of said blade portion to provide resilient gripping means engageable with the inner wall of said thread carrying member at points coinciding substantially with the longitudinal center and base respectively of said member and adjacent to the areas of its greatest transverse curvature.
4. In a loom shuttle structure, the combination with a permanently shaped, tapering, tubular thread carrying member of substantially elliptical cross-section throughout the major portion of its extent, of a spindle member supporting said thread carrying member and provided with a transversely extending shoulder having oppositely positioned spaced portions fixedly positioned relative thereto, and spaced blade portions located outwardly from said shoulder longitudinally of the spindle, said spaced portions fitting within and engaging with opposite interior portions of the member wall at points adjacent to the base and longitudinal central portion respectively of said member and substantially on the major axis of the elliptical crosssection of said thread carrying member.
