Claims.
My invention relates to locking devices and particularly to locking devices for clamp screws.
Outboard motors for boats are portable in nature and relatively valuable and, since they are 5 removably attached to boats by means of clamps,
many thefts of such motors from boats and motor storage racks occur.
A general object of my invention is to provide locking means readily associatable with a mounting bracket of any outboard motor for locking the bracket against removal from a boat or rack.
A more specific object is to provide such a locking device which may be readily substituted for the original clamping screw of any outboard motor mounting bracket.
Another object is to provide such a device comprising a clamping screw and a body screwthreadedly mounted thereon, releasably fixable 2 thereon, and arranged for abutment with the clamp yoke to restrain the clamping screw from loosening movement thereof.
A further object is to provide such a locking device of efiective, light, compact, simple, rugged and inexpensive construction.
These and other objects and advantages will more fully appear from the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like reference characters refer to the same or similar parts throughout the views, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a partially broken away side view of my locking device shown in operative association with the mounting bracket of an outboard motor;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken along the line 22 of Fig. 1 as indicated by the arrows;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken along the line 33 of Fig. 1 as indicated by the arrows;
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 but of another form of my device; and

Referring to the drawing my outboard locking device is shown operatively associated with an outboard attachment bracket A and'a member B which may be the rear end board of a boat or a part of a storage rack for outboard motors. The bracket A includes a backing portion 6, yoke 0 I, and the bossed apertured portion 8 to which a motor may be swingably attached in the usual manner. The yoke I includes an apertured internally screw-threaded free end portion 9 for receiving a clamping screw in screw-threaded 56 engagement therewith.

Means is provided whereby the body I4 is limited in regard to rotation thereof relative to the yoke I. For this purpose I provide an abutment finger 20 projecting from the portion Ma of the body l4 toward the yoke I so that the path of the abutment element 20 when the body I4 is rotated relative to the yoke i will intersect a portion of the yoke 1 whereby the element 20 will abut the yoke I to limit rotation of the body l4 relative to the yoke I.
To replace an ordinary clamping screw used in the mounting bracket of an outboard motor with my device the ordinary clamping screw is first removed; next the body I4 is placed relative to the yoke 1 of the mounting bracket, as shown in Fig. l; the clamping screw It with the element ll removed therefrom is then screwed into the body I4 and the screw threaded portion 9 of the yoke I. The element Il may then be attached to the free end of the screw H! by means of the screw I2a. In use of the device the clamping screw may be used in the usual manner to clamp the bracket A onto a member such as the member B. When the clamping screw has been tightened the body I4 is preferably swung in a counter-clockwise direction to bring the abutment finger 20 into engagement with the yoke I, as shown in the drawing. When this has been done the screw It) may be further tightened until one of the grooves llJc is aligned with the bolt I! whereafter the key l5 may be turned to project the bolt I'I into the groove I aligned therewith. The key It: may then, of course, be removed. Obviously the'device when looked as described above will prevent loosening or unscrewing rotary motion of the clamping screw Ill relative to the yoke 1.

The yoke I is provided with an aperture 22 drilled or otherwise formed therein to receive the cylindrical element 2|.
' It should be apparent that I have invented a simple, compact, rugged, and inexpensive locking device for outboard motors, and that the device is readily adapted for installation in operative association with the mounting bracket of any outboard motor. It is also apparent that my device is readily adapted for use in connection with clamping screws other than those found in outboard motor brackets.
It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form, proportions, details, and arrangement of the various parts without departing from the scope of my invention,
What is claimed is:
1. In combination with a screw and an internally screw threaded apertured member wherein said screw is screw-threadedly engaged, releasable means for limiting unscrewing movement of said screw relative to said member comprising, a body with which said screw is associated in normally rotatable relation, and releasable means for so interconnecting said screw and said body as to limit relative rotation therebetween, said body being so associated with said member that relative rotation therebetween is limited.
2. In combination with a screwand an internally screw-threaded apertured member wherein said screw is screw-threadedly engaged, releasable means for limiting unscrewing movement of said screw relative to said member comprising, a body mounted on said screw in normally rotatable relation therewith, releasable means associated with said body and said screw for fixing said body on said screw, and a portion of said body being engageable with said member to limit rotation of said body relative to said member.
3. In combination with a clamp including a yoke and a clamping screw screw-threadedly engaged in an apertured and internally screwthreaded portion of said yoke, locking means for limiting unscrewing movement of said screw relative to said yoke comprising, a body mounted on said screw in a manner normally enabling rotation of said screw relative to said body, releasable means associated with said body and said screw for restraining said screw from rotation relative to said body, and means carried by said body for abutment with said yoke to stop rotation of said body relative to said yoke.
4. In combination with a clamp including a yoke and a clamping screw screw-threadedly engaged in an apertured and internally screwthreaded portion of said yoke, locking means for limiting unscrewing movement of said screw relative to said yoke comprising, a body mounted on said screw in normally rotatable relation therewith, releasable means for fixing said body on said screw, and an element formed on said body and projecting therefrom in such manner that the path of said element, when said body is rotated relative to said yoke intersects a portion of said yoke whereby said element will abut said yoke to limit rotation of said body relative to said yoke.
5. In combination with a clamp bracket having a portion thereof apertured and internally screwthreaded to receive a clamping screw, a clamping screw screw-threadedly carried by said portion and locking means for limiting unscrewing movement of said screw relative to said bracket comprising, a body mounted on said screw in normally rotatable relation thereto, a locking element carried in said body for movement toward and away from said screw, said screw having a recess therein for receiving a portion of said element to restrain said screw from rotation relative to said body, and means carried by said body for engaging said bracket to limit rotation of said body relative to said bracket.
6. In combination with a clamp bracket having a portion thereof apertured and internally screwthreaded to receive a clamping screw, a clamping screw screw-threadedly carried by said portion and locking means for limiting unscrewing movement of said screw relative to said bracket comprising, a body mounted on said screw in normally rotatable relation therewith, a locking element carried in said body in slidable relation thereto radially of said screw, said screw having a recess therein for receiving a portion of said element to restrain said screw from rotation relative to said body, and means carried by said body for engaging said bracket to limit rotation of said body relative to said bracket.
7. The combination defined in claim 6 and said screw having additional recesses therein circumferentially displaced from said first-mentioned recess whereby said screw may be locked against rotation relative to said body in various rotated positions relative to said body.

In combination with a clamp bracket having a portion thereof apertured and internally screwthreaded to receive a clamping screw, a clamping screw screw-threadedly carried by said portion and locking means for limiting unscrewing movement of said screw relative to said bracket comprising, a body mounted on said screw in normally rotatable relation therewith but in such manner as to prevent rectilinear movement of said body longitudinally of said screw, a locking element carried in said body for movement inwardly and outwardly of said screw, said screw having a groove therein extending longitudinally thereof for receiving a portion of said element to restrain said screw from rotation relative to said body, and means carried by said body for engaging said bracket to limit rotation of said body relative thereto.
9. In combination with a clamp bracket having a portion thereof apertured and internally screwthreaded to receive a clamping screw, a clamping screw screw-threadedly carried by said portion and locking means for limiting unscrewing movement of said screw relative to said bracket comprising, a body screw-threadedly mounted on said screw, a key-operated lock mounted in said body and including a bolt respectively projectible and retractible radially inwardly and outwardly of said screw, said screw having formed therein a groove extending longitudinally thereof for receiving said bolt when the same is in projected position to restrain said body from rotation relative to said screw, and an element formed on said body to project therefrom on the side thereof toward said bracket whereby said element may be placed in such position that it will engage said bracket to limit rotational movement of said body relative thereof.
10. In combination with a clamp including a yoke and a clamping screw screw-threadedly engaged in an apertured and internally screwthreaded portion of said yoke, locking means for limiting unscrewing movement of said screw relative to said yoke comprising, a body screwthreadedly mounted on said screw, a key-operated lock mounted in said body and including a bolt respectively projectible and retractible radially inwardly and outwardly of said screw, said screw having therein a series of longitudinally extendin" grooves each adapted for receiving a portion of said bolt to fix said body on said screw, and a rigid element provided on said body and projecting therefrom toward said yoke for engagement therewith to limit rotation of said body relative to said yoke.
