This invention relates to advertising displays and the like, particularly to the border edges and corner construction thereof. More particularly, this invention relates to collapsible pasteboard advertising displays having novel interlocking corner construction.
One of the principal objects of the invention is the production of a display of the above character well adapted for shipment in flat form; capable of easy set up; of sturdy construction; and having a highly improved appearance.
-Another object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient locking means at the border corners of the display.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a unitary blank of novel border and corner construction.
Other oniects and advantages are the production of an advertising display capable of being set up with maximum celerity by simple manipulation and producing the three dimensional form of the display with bevelled margins bounded by prescored and precut edges producing sharp corners.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification having reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this disclosure in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a preferred form of my invention.
Figure 2 is a rear perspective view of the form shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view of one corner of the form shown in Figure 2, but in collapsed or fiat condition.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 showing the corner in set-up" condition as in Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a section taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a section taken substantially on the line 6-6 of Figure 4.
Figure '7 is a diagrammatic view illustrating the manner of packing for shipment a plurality of the displays shown in Figure 1.
Figure 8 is a diagrammatic sectional view illustrating the display in flattened condition.
Figure 9 isa view similar to Figure 8, showing the display set-up.
Figure 10 is a view of the blank of the illustrated embodiment of the foregoing display.
Figure 11 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the lower left corner of the blank.
Figure 12 is a view similar to Figure 11, but showing the corner in flat condition, prior to shipment and ready for packaging.
Figure 13 is an enlarged fragmentary section view of the material preferably employed in this invention.
Referring to the drawings:
The reference character l designates adisplay of pasteboard or similar sheet materialhaving a main advertising surface l2, and having a bevelled border composed of a number of sections I4 each at an angle to the main surface, giving the appearance of a substantially solid' thick plaque. Well defined edges are presented to view at the juncture between the main surface l2 and the border surfaces M in the form of an obtuse edge a, and a sharp or acute perimetrical edge as at b is presented to the observers view.
Referring to Figure 2, the display In is provided with a rear frame I6 forming an integral part of the displ y. the frame being composed of several sections l8 each contiguous with a border section It. An easel 20 of any desired type may be suitably attached in any desired manner, the easel forming no important part of the invention, it being understood that the display in use may be hung or supported in man ways.
Each of the sections 18 of the rear frame is provided with a tongue means generally indicated as 22 at one end, and a socket means generally indicated as 24 at the other, the tongue of one frame section being directed toward and cooperable with the socket of the adjacent frame sections, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The tongue means comprises an extension 26 having a substantially rhomboid tab 28 suitably secured'to the end thereof. The socket means comprises a flap 30 adapted to be folded over along the score 32, against the frame section and suitably secured thereto.
A leaf portion 40 is provided in the flap 3D partially intersecting the line of the score 32. This leaf is provided by an offset through-cut interrupting the continuity of the score 32 .to
form a ledge 4| upon folding over of the flap 30. This ledge projects from the mitre edge of the pocket means. The flap 30 is secured to the frame section locally and preferably at the free corner of the flap as shown, or may be glued along the margin of the free edges of the flap to provide an expansible pocket for the reception of the tongue 26 between the frame section and the flap (see Figures 3 and The socket includes a rhomboid opening 44 adapted to receive the tab 28 (see Figures 4 and 6). The ledge 4| is bounded by the said throughcut" 84, of the flap, the edge of the leaf and the end through-cuts" It. The leaf may be pressscored at its root as at ll to prevent tearing.
It will be noticed that the through-cu 84 is offset inwardly with respect to the cut-score" 82 so that upon folding the fiap over as indicated in Figure 12, an outward projecting shelf is provided, which extends from the edge score I}. The width of the shelf thus provided is twice the amount of the said oil'set; one half of the presented width of the shelf being subtractively provided by the frame side of the score 32 when the fiap is doubled over upon the frame portion, and the other half of the presented width being additively provided by the flap. This shelf providesa pilot means for aiding in initially spreading the mouth of the pocket and also serves as a pry guide for the insertion of the tab and the forward edge of the tongue into said pocket. The shelf is yieldable along a slit or mouth of the pocket formed by the fiap II and the frame section II, at the common mitre edge thereof, to enable easy insertion of the tongue. The portions of the fiap substantially at the middle thereof or at areas other than that surrounding the staple and the score 82, are also yieldable from their frame sections.
In the manufacture of the display as illustrated in Figure 1, the blank II. with suitable border and marginal scores a and b, is first prepared. In this respect it is worthy of notice that a single corner die may be embodied to cut out all four corners separately. All of the corners being the same, the blank need only be turned, presenting each corner in sequence, to be cut. The above operations provide a blank having tongues in windmill sequence. This lends convenience in preparing the display for shipment as well as convenience and celerity infinally setting-up" the display.
After the blank is prepared, the fiap I. is turned 180 over onto the adjacent portion of the frame II and secured in this position by any suitable means aforementioned. A staple II is employed in the instant embodiment and said staple is preferably driven at the free corner of the flap (see Figure 12). It is understood that two staples. one on each side of the rhomboid opening may be employed with emcacy.
The tab 2| may next or first be folded over on its cut-score l2 and secured to the tongue extension 2' by any means; in the instant case, the securing means is provided by a staple M. It is recommended that adhesive means may be embodied to hold the flap II and the tab 2. on and to their respective tongue members.
The frame sections II are then folded along the cut-scores" a so that they lie substantially fiat over the border sections II. In so doing, the tongues and tabs 28 are thus brought into insertable position with the mouth portion of the socket 24, and upon so doing, the preassembly of the display is established. The display is now in fiat pressembled condition ready for shipment.
In this condition, the display may be wrapped to prevent marring of the advertising face of one display by the back of another, and is therefore individually separated or covered by any suitable wrapper '0 (Figure 'l). A plurality of wrapped displays may be packed in a single container 82 in a compact manner.
when it is desired to "set-up" a fiat-received display, the simple instructions printed on back of the display, or otherwise noted, are followed. The instructions may comprise in part, arrows 6.,
muses indicating that the edges of the frame sections are to be urged toward one another in a direction normal to their ultimately common mitre edge. The result of such action is shown in Figures 4 and 6 wherein the display has assumed its depth or third dimensional characteristic.
It will be noted that in the set-up" condition of the display, the tab 28 is received in the opening 44, the'edge ill thereof engaging the edge 12 of the opening, thereby locking the edges of the frame sections and the corners of the display in position.
It will be particularly noted that the flap It in this condition yieldably retains the tongue and tab in locking engagement with the opening 44. Upon pressing the tab in, it becomes disengaged from the locking edge of the opening 44, whereupon the ends of the frame may be parted. The tab slides outward, but not completely out of the pocket, and the display assumes its flattened condition.
It will therefore be seen that with simple manipulations, the display has become set-up", and with other simple manipulations, the display may be "knocked down in flat form as received. It will also be noted that the rear frame in the set-up condition prevents bulging of the marginal edge of the display. Furthermore, the rear frame contributes greatly to the alignment of the margins of the border and the rigidity of the display as a whole.
The simple operations above described upon a prepared flat assembly. of relative movements in said plane producing a projection or displacement of other surfaces or another contiguous surface from said fiat plane to another plane other than the plane of action thereby produces a three dimensional display. The locking means are partially engaged in flat preassembled condition, and facilitates the "setting-up operation.
By "cut-scores" is meant such scoring as will permit easy folding without separation of the parts oneither side thereof, as is indicated at H in Figure 13, and by "through-cu is meant a slit severing the parts on either side thereof, as indicated at 18 in Figure 13.
It is preferred to employ a kraft paper or other reinforcing backing 80, to which the depth of the cut of "cut-scores 14 may extend, although this reinforcement is not absolutely essential.
Having thus described a preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that while this preferred embodiment has been treated as a vertical display or sign, it will be understood that the invention is not to be limited to a display of four corner construction; displays including a lesser number of corners may be effectively used. The nature of a single bevelled corner of the construction shown lends itself admirably as a usable entity for display purposes and may also be used as a base or pedestal for supporting other displays, and may cooperate in the advertised message, in whole or in part.
What I desire to claim is:
- 1. In a display device of the character described having a main body portion, front sections adapted to form a chamfered border for said body portion, rear sections adapted to form a frame spaced from said main body portion, adjacent sections of said rear frame having mitred edges adapted to abut in the form of a mitre Joint, each of said mitre joints of said rear frame comprising a rear flap disposed fiatwise against and secured to one of said rear frame sections and having a mitred edge common with a mitre edge on said one rear frame section, an expansible pocket between said flap and said one frame section, a slit for said pocket along said common mitred edges, said slit forming an expansible mouth for said pocket, an opening spaced from said mitred edge and providing a tab engaging edge, a mitred edge on the other of said frame sections, a tongue extensible from said other frame section into said opening and said pocket, and a tab on said tongue at a distance from its said mitred edge and providing an edge engageable by said tab engaging edge of said opening, whereby said tab is resiliently and releasably retainable in locking engagement with said opening.
2. In a display device of the character described having a main body portion, front sections adapted to form a chamfered border for said body portion, rear sections adapted to form a frame spaced from said main body portion, adjacent sections of said rear frame having mitred edges adapted to abut in the form of a mitre joint, each of said mitre joints of said rear frame comprising a rear flap disposed flatwise against and secured to one of said rear frame sections and having a mitred edge common with a mitre edgeon said one rear frame section, an expansible pocket between said flap and said one frame section, a slit for said pocket along said common mitred edges, said slit forming an expansible mouth for said pocket, an
opening spaced from said mitred edge and providing a tab engaging edge, a mitred edge on the other of said frame sections, a tongue extensible from said other frame section into said opening and said pocket, a tab on said tongue at a distance from its said mitred edge and providing an edge engageable by said tab engaging edge of said opening, whereby said tab is resiliently and releasably retainable in locking engagement with said opening, and a pry flap along said slit whereby said pocket is expansible by said tongue and tab.
