Description
Pa tented Jan. 17, 1939 PATENT OFFECE CHICK FOUNT William A. Zaloudek, Tipton, Ind., assighor to The Oakes Manufacturing Company, Tipton,
Ind., a corporation Application March 8,
1 Claim.
'I'his invention relates so a chiok fount principally used for maintaining a drinking supply of Water for baby chicks, but which may also Ioe applicable to poultry in general, for the feeding of milk, medicineor feed in granular form. The purpose: of the invention is to providea, single support of a convenient and economical construction for jointly supporting the drinking or feeding pan and a reservoir in the form of a Mason jar.
The principal feature of the invention. resides in the provision of a stamped ring so formed as to permit the threadecl neck of a Mason jar to be screw threaded therein and supported thereby so as to be readily and conveniently mounted and 1 removed. The ring in turn has secured thereto a plurality of radially disposed legs of spring wire having notches formed therein for receiving the annular bead of the pan so as to removably clamp and support it in elevated position and in juxtaposition With respect to the jar and supporting ring.
The fu1l nature of the inventio-n will be understood from the accompanying drawing and the following description and claim:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the pan and supporfb with the jar removed. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the pan and support showing ehe jar in dotted lines mounted therein.
In the drawing, there is illustrated a drinking or feeding pan 10 most conveniently formed o1 glass but which may be stamped from suitable metal. Said. pan is provided with sloping side walls II terminating in a peripheral bead I2.
The support comprises a sheeo metal starnping in the form of a rigid annular ring I3 which, when in position is convex in cross section so a to have an inwardly and downwardly extending inner wa11 and an outwardly and downwardly extending outer Wall. 'Iheinner Wall is provided with a notch indicated ab I4, one side of Which merges into an inwardly and upwardly extending 1ip I5 which is gradually reducod until it merges into the inner edge 015 the ring. Said 1ip is formed by upturning a portion of the inner edge of the ring adjacent one side of the notch. By means of this formation in the ring, the Mason jar indicated ab I6 and. having a sorew threaded neck 1937, Serial N0. 129,693
indzicated ab IT may be inserted in the ring and its screvv threads caused to engage the 1ip I5 for screwing the jar intosupported position. 'Ihe body of the ring coupled with the noteh and upturned lip serves as an inte1nal thread. for rec'eiving the screw threads of the jar and the inwardly and downwardly extending inner surfaoe of the ring provides a seat against which the neck of the jar abuts when screvved into position so as to be firmly supported thereby.
'I'he ring is further provided with a plurality of radially extencling arms I8 for receiving the spring legs I9. Said legs are formed of spring wire and permanently bellt to .provide a horizonaal section 20 adapt ad to be rigidly secured by Spot weld1ng or otherwise to the arms 18 and. extend over the edge of pan I0 when mounted in position. The wires then extend downwardly to provide suitable supporting leg 0f such length as to support the fount in elevated position, terminating in the outwardly extending fest 2I.
At the bend of the wire legs where they pass over and about the bead 2 formed about the upper edge of the pan HI, there is formed an inwardly extending shoulder 22 which extencis inwardly anc'l under thebead for supporting the pan upon the legs. The lege, being of spring wire, may be readily deflected so that t.he shoulder 22 disengages the bead and permits removal of the pan. On the other hand, the normal form 01 the v 1egs is such that the pan will be firmly gripped thereby about its beaded edge and firmly supported in elevated and juxtaposition with respect the ring I3 and jar I6.
The invention c1aimed. ist
In a poultry fount, a continuous ring adapted to receive the threaded nach: of a fount jar in inverted position, a-rms rigidly secured to and radiating from said ring, 1egs integral with and. depending from the o-uter ends of said arms, the said legs being deflected ab their juncture with said. arms 110 form shoulders, and a pan having its upper edge enga-ged with and sustained by said shoulders; said arms, ring, and the upper edge of said pan all dispo-sed in approximately the same plane.
