The invention forming the subject matter of this application relates generally to devices adapted to be applied to a block of articles of rectangular cross-section to facilitate the tying of the articles in assembled form; and more particularly, to a device of this character especially adapted for use in printing plants for tying up forms of type, slugs, etc., into pages, individual advertisements, and job printing forms in which the type and slugs are usually secured in assembled relation by several windings of common string.

The main object of the invention is to provide a device of the character referred to, which can be applied to a block of articles to secure all the articles in their assembled form, without necessitating the use of both hands of the operator in connecting the opposite ends of the device to each other.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described, which can be manufactured very cheaply in large quantities, and sold at low cost.

Other objects of the invention will become apparent as the detailed description thereof proceeds.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a block of articles of rectangular cross-section assembled as a rectangular block, and secured in assembled form by the invention herein. described;

Figure 3 is a broken top plan view of a block r of articles shown in Figure 1, and having the invention applied thereto.

As shown in the drawing, the invention comprises a strip of sheet metal designated generally by the reference numeral 4. The strip 4 is bent to form two flat plates 5 and 6 bent at right angles to each other. The plate 5 is stamped centrally to form oppositely extending tabs 1 and 8 adapted to form securing means for the free end of a string 9, designed to be wound around a block of articles 10, such as type, slugs, etc. commonly used in printing plants, to be built up into forms for pages, job printing forms, etc.

As shown in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawing, the plate 5 on opposite sides of the slots II and I2, formed by stamping out the tabs 1 and B, is stamped to provide friction lugs 13 extending lengthwise of the plate 5 toward the It will be apparent from Figure 3 of the drawing that the lugs 13 form friction devices on the inner face of the plate 5 to prevent slipping of the plate when the latter is applied to one side of the block I0.

The plate 6 is formed integral with a plate I4 5 and with a tubular member stamped to form a cylinder l5 in which a tension spring I6 is housed and guided. The spring I6 is fixed at one end to a hook I1 stamped out from the plate 6, the other end of the spring l6 being connected to one end of the string 9, which is adapted to extend around all four sides of the block 10, and to have its free end wound around the oppositely directed tabs 1 and 8 for the purpose of securing all the slugs or type of the block [0 in assembled relation. The cylinder 15 obviously provides a housing for the spring and maintains it constantly in the general direction in the plates 6 and [4.

In applying the device to a form of type, it will be apparent that when the operator applies the members 5 and 6 to a corner of the block, the lugs 13 prevent slipping of the device when tension is applied around the block or form to the string 9. The winding of the free end of the string 9 around the tabs 1 and 8, at any desired degree of tension, can be effected in less than a second, without requiring the use of both hands of the operator, such as is necessary where the ends of a string must be knotted together.

It is to be understood that the invention is not to be considered as limited to the specific construction and arrangement described herein, since it is evident that many changes may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the claims appended hereto.

What I claim is:

1. A package-tier comprising a pair of plates extending substantially at right angles to each other, a cylindrical housing extending lengthwise from one of said plates, a tension spring secured at one end to the outer face of said plate and slidably arranged in said housing, a string secured at one end to the free end of said spring, and means on the outer face of the other plate to secure any free part of said string thereto.

A package-tier comprising a pair of plates extending substantially at right angles to each other, a cylindrical housing extending length- 5 wise from the end of one of said plates, a tension spring slidably mounted in said housing and having one end thereof connected to said plate, a string secured at one end to the free end of said spring, and a pair of tabs projecting from the outer face of the other plate to secure any free part of said string thereto.

A package-tier comprising a pair of plates extending substantially at right angles to each other, a cylindrical housing extending lengthwise from the end of one of said plates, a tension spring slidably mounted in said housing and having one end thereof connected to said plate, a string secured at one end to the free end of said spring, a pair of tabs projecting in opposite directions from the outer face of the other plate to secure any free part of said string thereto, and a plurality of tabs projecting from the inner face of said other plate and toward the first named plate to form friction means adapted to contact with a package to be tied.

4. A package-tier comprising a pair of plates extending substantially at right angles to one another, a. housing extending lengthwise with respect to one of said plates, a spring secured at one end to the outer face of said plate and slidably arranged in said housing, a string secured at one end to the free end of said spring, and means on the outer face of the other plate to secure any free part of said string thereto.
