My invention is generally applicable to metering pumps for dispensing gasolene, for instance, of the character disclosed in Letters Patent of the United States No. 2,022,629 granted November 26,1935 to Joseph C. Woodford as assignor to John Wood Manufacturing Company, Inc., and No. 2,062,997 granted December 1, 1936 to me as assignor to the same corporation. The present invention is also applicable to the apparatus shown in my copending application Serial No. 145,056, filed May 27, 1937 for Letters Patent of the UnitedStates and assigned to said corporation.
It is characteristic of both forms of metering 0 pumps, respectively disclosed in said Letters Patent, that the liquid to be dispensed is drawn from a subjacent tank and discharged through a flexible dispensing hose by means of a pump actuated by an electric motor, and that said motor. is controlled by an electric switch operable by a vertically reciprocatory operating bar which is connected with a hook lever projecting exterior to the pump casing and adapted to support the dispensing hose in idle position; so that when the hose is hung on said hook leverthe switch is opened and the pump stopped, and when the hose is removed from said lever the latter may be manipulated to close the switch to energize the pump. Moreover, as disclosed in each of said Letters Patent, and application, the electrically driven pump forces the liquid through a meter including a rotor which is connected to drive a registering mechanism indicating the volume of liquid dispensed and, in said Letters Patent No. 2,062,997, and said application, the
registering mechanism not only indicates the voiumeof liquid dispensed, but also computes and registers'the value. thereof. The form of my invention disclosed in said application, wherein the vertically reciprocatory operating-bar afore said is utilized to initiate the operation of the computing registering mechanism, simultaneously with the closure of the electric switch for operating' the pump, is now being manufactured by said corporation in conjunction with the apparatus shown in said Woodford patent. Consequently, it' is highly important in the several forms of apparatus aforesaid to insure that the vertically reciprocatory operating bar shall be properly actuated to the desired extent for-effecting its double-function aforesaid.
Therefore,.the purpose and effect of my present invention is to insure the proper actuation of said vertically reciprocatory operating bar by mechanical. means which supplement the initial manual movement of such bar by the operator. As hereinafter described, such means includes a spring pressed toggle lever linkage.
My invention includes the various novel features of construction and arrangement hereinafter more definitely specified.

Referring to Figs. I, II and V; the pump housing 1, whichis a rectangular tubular vertically extending casing, has the hook lever 2 fulcrunied on the pivot 3 in the bracket 4 and is operatively connected with the vertically reciprocatory operating bar 5 as above mentioned. The connecting means, best shown in Figs. I and II includes the link 5 which has its upper end 6 extending through the inner end of said hook lever. 2,- and has its lower end 6" extending through the pair of similar parallel levers l which are both fulcrumed onthe pivot pin 8 supported in the bracket 9 which is rigidly connected with said housing I. The right hand ends of said levers I are rigidly connected by the cross bar 7' from which the pair of similar springs H extend to the cross bar l2 which is rigidly mounted in the left hand end of the single lever l3 which is fulcrumed at its right hand end on the pivot pin M which is journaled in the pendent right hand end 9 of said bracket 9. Said single lever I3-is connected by the pivot pin l3 with the lower end of the link IS, the upper end I5 of which is pivotallyv connected with said vertically reciprocatory operating bar 5. Said single lever I3 is also connected by the pivot pin IS with the upper clevis end of the bolt I"! which is vertically adjustable, secured in the bracket [8 which is rigidly connected With the motor switch rod 19, conveniently by the set screws 20, as indicated in Fig. II. Said rod I9 is mounted for reciprocation in suitable bearings in said housing I including the bearing bracket i which is rigidly secured to said housing. As shown in Fig. V; said rod I9 hasrigidly connected therewith the bracket I9 which is operatively connected with the switch it". The eifect of the arrangement above described is that when the outer end of said hook lever 2 is depressed, by the weight of the dispensing hose or otherwise, toward the position shown in Fig. II, said operating bar 5 and switch rod l9 are both uplifted to the extreme limit of their movement by the snap action of said springs ll upon the toggle lever linkage described and are upheld in that position, in which the computing registering mechanism and the motor switch are inoperative and the motor idle, unless and until the indicating means a and a of the computing registering mechanism A are reset to their zero position. That zeroizing operation may be eifected by the operator manually turning the setback shaft 2i by means of the crank handle 22 shown in Fig. I.

As indicated in Fig. Vythe computing registering mechanism A is arranged to be actuated by the shaft b of a rotor in the meter 3 which is turned one revolution for each gallon of liquid passed through the meter. Said rotor is turned by liquid which is uplifted from a subjacent tank through the cons duit C by the pump D which is connected by the belt E with the electric motor F which supports the electric switch box G. The liquid is delivered from said pump D through the conduit II, air eliminator I and conduit J into the casing of the meter B, and passes from the meter casing through the conduit K and sight gage L to the dispensing hose lVl having the nozzle N arranged to be supported by'said hook lever 2.
If'and when the indicating means aforesaid are at their zero position; the operator may initiate the next succeeding dispensing operation by pulling the chain 23. The consequent downward movement of the inner end of said hook lever 2 and the link 6 swings the right hand end of the pair of levers l downward and, when such downward movement has swung the right hand ends of the springs l 5 down below a line drawn through the axes of the pivot pins 52 and i l, said springs H snap the pair of links l3 downward to the lower limit of their movement and of the movement of the operating bar 5 of the registering mechanism and said springs then hold the mechanism in that position for a dispensing operation until the hook lever 2 is again depressed at its outer left hand end'toward the position shown in Fig. II.
As above stated, part of the mechanism shown in Figs. I and II is' of the character disclosed in the Woodford patent aforesaid and that part includes the chain 23 which extends between the pair of guide rollers 26, shown in Fig. I, and is connected at its inner end with the pivot pin 25 at the lower end of the bell crank lever 28. Said lever 26 is fulcrumed on the pivot pin El in the bracket 28 fixed in said housing l, and the upper end of said lever 28 overhangs the plunger 29 which is mounted to reciprocate vertically in the flange 38 on said bracket 28. Said plunger 29 is rigidly connected with said bracket 23 fixed upon the switch operating rod is, as above described; so that the effect of pulling said chain is to push down said rod it and thereby close the electric switch to energize the pump motor and supply the dispensing hose with liquid to be dispensed.
However, as above stated, such dispensing operation cannot be effected unless and until the indicating mechanism connected with the operating bar 5 is placed at its zero position and the release of said bar 5 for downward movement thus efiected. In other words; it is impossible to operate said switch rod l9 by said chain 23 until the means a indicating the volume of liquid dispensed has been set at its initial zero position preceding any dispensation of liquid.
Referring to Figs. III and IV; the pump housing 3!, which is a rectangular tubular vertically extending casing, has the hook lever 32 fulcrumed on the pivot 33 in the bracket 36 and operatively connected with the vertically reciprocatory operating bar 35 like said bar 5. The connecting means includes the link 36 which has its upper end 36 extending through the inner end of said hook lever 32 and has its lower end 36 extending through the pair of similar parallel levers 3? which are both fulcrumed on the pivot pin 38 supported in the bracket 39 which is rigidly connected with said housing ill. The right hand ends of said levers 31 are rigidly connected by the cross bar Bl from which the pair of similar springs 45 extend to the cross bar 42 which is rigidly mounted in the left hand end of the single lever 43 which is fulcrumed at its right hand end on the pivot pin 64 which is journaled in the pendent right hand end 39 of said bracket 39. Said single lever 43 is connected by the pivot pin 33 with the lower end of the link 45, the upper end #35 of which is pivotally connected with said vertically reciprocatory bar '35. Said single lever 43 is also connected by the pivot pin 16 with the upper clevis end of the bolt 41 which is vertically adjustable in the head 47' of the pivot d? which is pivotally connected with the bracket 48 which is rigidly connected with the motor switch rod 49. Said rod 69 is mounted for reciprocation in suitable bearings in said housing 3! including the bearing bracket 3| which is rigidly secured to said housing.
The elfect of the arrangement above described is that when the outer end of said hook lever 32 is depressed, by the weight of the dispensing hose or otherwise, toward the position shown in Fig. IV, said operating bar 35 and switch rod 49 are both uplifted to the extreme limit of their movement by the snap action of said springs ll upon the toggle lever linkage described, and are upheld in that position, in which the computing registering mechanism and the motor switch are inoperative and the motor idle, unless and until the indicating means of the computing registering mechanism are reset to their zero position. That zeroizing operation may be effected by the operator manually turning the setback shaft 5| by means of the crank handle 52, shown in Fig. III.
If and when the indicating means aforesaid are at their zero position; the operator may initiate the next succeedingdispensing operation by uplifting the outer end of said hose supporting hook lever 32. The consequent downward movement of the inner end of said hook lever32 and the link 35 swings the right hand end of the pair of levers 3? downward and, when such downward movement has swung the right hand ends of the springs ll down below a line drawn through the axes of the pivot pins 42 and 4, said springs 4| snap the single lever 43 downward to the lower limit of its movement and of the movement of the operating bar 35 of the registering mechanism, and the operating rod 49 of the motor controlling switch; and said springs then hold the mechanism in that position for a dispensing operation until the hook lever 32 is again depressed at its outer left hand end toward the position shown in Fig. IV. However, as above stated, such dispensing operation cannot be effected unless and until the indicating mechanism connected with the operating bar 35 is placed at its zero position and the release of said bar 35 for downward movement thus effected. In other words; it is impossible to operate said switch rod 49 which is operatively connected with said switch I9 like said rod [9 above described, until the means indicating the volume of liquid dispensed has been set at its initial zero position preceding any dispensation of liquid.
It is characteristic of both forms of my invention chosen for illustration that a spring pressed toggle lever linkage insures the proper actuation of both the vertically reciprocatory operating bar of the computing registering mechanism and the vertically reciprocatory operating bar of the electric switch controlling the motor of the pump by which liquid is dispensed.
Therefore, I do not desire to limit myself to the precise details of construction or arrangement or method of operation herein set forth as it is obvious that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the essential features of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination with a pump for the liquid to be dispensed, actuated by an electric motor; of an electric switch controlling said motor; a reciprocatory rod for operating said switch; a spring pressed toggle lever linkage operatively connected with said reciprocatory rod; and a manually movable lever connected for initiating movement of said rod; whereby upon initiation of reciprocatory movement of said red by manipulation of said lever, said spring pressed toggle lever linkage effects complete movement of said rod in the direction of movement thus manually initiated, and thus insures proper placement of said rod in either direction for respectively initiating and terminating each dispensing operation.
2. In liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination with a pump for the liquid to be dispensed, actuated by an electric motor; of an electric switch for controlling said motor; a reciprocatory rod for operating said switch; a spring stressed lever linkage connected to said rod; and a manually movable lever connected for initiation of movement of said linkage; whereby upon initiation of movement of said linkage by operation of said manually movable lever said linkage automatically effects complete movement of said rod in either direction of movement of said rod thus manually initiated, and thus insures proper movement of said switch in either direction for respectively initiating and terminating each dispensing operation.

In liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination with a pump for the liquid to be dispensed, actuated by an electric motor; of an electric switch for controlling said motor; areoiprocatory rod for operating said switch; a spring stressed lever linkage connected to said rod; a flexible hose through which the liquid is dispensed from said pump; and a pull chain and lever for connecting said hose with said rod; whereby upon initiation of movement of said rod by movement of said hose, chain and lever, said linkage efiects complete movement of said rod in either direction of movement of said rod thus manually initiated, and thus insures proper movement of said switch in either direction for respectively initiating and terminating each dispensing operation.

In liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination with a pump for the liquid to be dispensed, actuated by an electric motor; of an electric switch for controlling said motor; a reciprocatory rod for operating said switch; a spring stressed toggle lever linkage connected to said rod; and a manually movable lever connected for initiation of movement of said linkage; whereby upon initiation of movement of said linkage by operation of said manually movable lever said linkage automatically eiTects complete movement of said rod in either direction of movement of said rod thus manually initiated, and thus insures proper movement of said switch in either direction for respectively initiating and terminating each dispensing operation.

In liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination with a pump for the liquid to be dispensed, actuated by an electric motor; of an electric switch for controlling said motor; a reciprocatory rod for operating said switch; a spring stressed toggle lever linkage connected to said rod; a flexible hose through which the liquid is dispensed from said pump; and a pull chain and lever for connecting said hose with said rod; whereby upon initiation of movement of said rod by movement of said hose, chain and lever, said linkage effects complete movement of said rod in either direction of movement of said rod thus manually initiated, and thus insures proper movement of said switch in either direction for respectively initiating and terminating each dispensing operation.

In liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination with a pump for the liquid to be dispensed, actuated by an electric motor; of an electric switch for controlling said motor; a reciprocatory rod for operating said switch; a spring stressed lever linkage connected to said rod; and a manually movable lever arranged to support a dispensing hose connected with said pump, and connected for initiation of movement of said linkage; whereby upon initiation of movement of said linkage by operation of said manually movable lever said linkage automatically efiects complete movement of said rod in either direction of movement of said rod thus manually initiated, and thus insures proper movement of said switch in either direction for respectively initiating and terminating each dispensing operation.

In liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination with a pump for the liquid to be dispensed, actuated by an electric motor; of an electric switch for controlling said motor; a reciprocatory rod for operating said switch; a spring stressed lever linkage connected to said rod; a manually movable lever arranged to support a dispensing hose connected with said pump, and connected for initiation of movement of said linkage; and a pull chain and lever for connecting said hose with said rod; whereby upon initiation of movement of said rod by said hose supporting lever or by said hose, chain and lever, said linkage effects complete movement of said rod in either direction of movement of said rod thus manually initiated, and thus insures proper movement of said switch in either direction for respectively initiating and terminating each dispensing operation.
