'I'he present inventionrelates to the manufacture of counters and in one aspect consists in a novel machine forskiving and'slashing counter blankspreparatory to molding them. In another Y Q5 aspect it consists in an automatically operating slashing mechanism which may be employed as -an independent unit or as an attachment or auxiliary mechanism for a skiving machine. In making certain types of shoes, of which fi-`stitch downs are one example, the shoe manufacturers require counters having outwardly directed flanges as distinguished from the inturned flanges which are foundin counters intended for shoes of other types. In preparing a counter *F516 blank for-molding an outturned anged therein it has been the practice to slash a portion of the lower margin since this must be elongated in the molding operation. The slashes permit sections of the margin to` fan out and lie flat without disi torticn of the upstanding walls of the counter thus facilitating the molding operation and vimprovingthe molded counter. f
Prior to my invention counters have been slashed as a distinct operation either by hand or w uby the aid of a slashing'machine to which the counter blanks vhave been presented successively `by `an operator. An object of the `present inventionjis to provide an automatically acting slash- `ing-machine to which counter blanks may be fed :130` mechanically from a magazine or other source vof supply and by which the slashing operation is effected automatically, accurately and at high speed, without making any considerable demands upon the skill and judgment of an operator. Upon the entering side of the rolls I2 and I4 is provided a work table I5 from which successive counter blanks are delivered to the rolls by a reciprocating feed slide I8. The mechanism slide is not herein shown since it forms no part of the present invention.
The matrix roll mechanism is designed to bevel more or less of the marginal portion of the counter blank. For example, in Fig. 3 is shown a counter blank of the rocker bottom type which is one kind of counter that may be handled advantageously in the illustrated machine. It derives its name from the fact that its lower marginal edge is not straight, but is formed by two lines which diverge from a central point so that the ange of the molded counter tapers in a pronounced manner toward both forward corners.
In skiving such a counter blank it is customary to bevel the entire margin leaving a central portion 90 of full thickness and providing an upper curved and bevelled margin 9| and a lower beveled margin 92 bounded by straight diverging edges. The matrix mechanism above v-described may be designed to bevel a counter blank in the manner suggested in Fig. 3 or in any other similar manner. In any case the counter blanks are pushed one at a time into the bite of the skiving rolls by the advancingv movement of the feed slide I8, the blanks being positioned by suitable gauges, one of which 42 is shown in Fig. l.
The main driving shaft is journalled in bearings provided in the frame I0 directly behind the shaft I I. It is provided at its left hand end, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4 with a driving pulley 2|. Its right hand portion is surrounded by a longitudinally movable tubular shaft 22 spaced from the shaft 20 by suitable bushings-I9 and arranged to be driven independently of the shaft 20 and in the opposite direction as will presently appear. 2| is a pinion 24 and this pinion is arranged to mesh with a large pinion 25 fast on the left hand end of the roll shaft I I. The roll shaft is geared to the matrix roll shaft at its right hand end by the pinions 26 and 21 already mentioned and the pinion 21 of the lower shaft II meshes with an elongated pinion 28 journalled on a stub shaft 29 which projects from the right hand side of the machine frame I0, as shown in Fig. 4.
The slashing mechanism will now be described. This includes a presser or anvil roll 38, shown in Fig. 2 as secured to the tubular shaft 22 by set screws and having a brass ring section 3| set into its left hand end. Cooperating 'with the anvil roll 30 is a cutter roll or blade carrier 32 having a peripheral series of straightv slashing blades 33 arranged upon a section of its left hand p end corresponding in width to the brass section 3| of the anvil roll. The cutter roll 32 is fast upon a transverse shaft 34 journalled in a frame 35 which has a pair of hubs 36 journalled upon the tubular shaft 22 so that the whole frame 35 may be swung from an operative position shown in full lines in Figs. 1, 4 and 5 to an inoperative position shown in dot and dash lines in Fig. 1. The frame 35 is provided with an upstanding slotted ear 31 and may be detachably and adjustably secured to the main frame I8 of the machine by a clamping bolt 38 passing through the ear. It will be understood that the swinging frame 35, all the parts carried thereby, and the Keyed to the shaft 20 next to the pulley tubular shaft 22 may be adjusted longitudinally upon the main shaft 20 so as to bring the slashing knives 33 transversely into any desired operating zone. The effective adjustment of the operating knives is thus in a direction at right vangles to the major axis of the counter blanks as delivered by the feeding and skiving rolls I2 and I4.
At its right hand end the shaft 34 carries a pinion 39 and this remains in mesh at all times with the pinion 23 on the tubular shaft 22 already mentioned, that is, the swinging movement of the shaft 34 in the frame 35 is concentric with the axis of the shaft 20 and consequently with the gear 23 thereon. The shaft 34 is carried by bearing boxes 40 which are adjustable in the sides of the frame 35 so that the shaft 34 may be moved bodily toward or from the shaft 20 and the pressure of engagement between the blades 33 and the anvil section 3| thus adjusted. The bearing boxes 48 are rigidly backed up by adjusting screws 4I threaded through ears upon the frame 35.
The pinion 23 on the tubular shaft 22 meshes with the elongated pinion 28 on the stub shaft 29 and theY latter in turn is driven by the pinion 2l on the lower roll shaft II. The provision of the elongated pinion 28 permits the longitudinal adjustment of the tubular shaft 22 with its pinion 23 Without disturbing the driving connection of the parts. The clamping bolt 38 serves to hold the frame 35 in any position o-f longitudinal adjustment.
It will thus be seen that there is a direct geared driving train between'the driving shaft 20 Aand. the skiving rolls I2 and I4, and a more extended geared driving train between the shaft 20 and the slashing rolls 30 and 32. The skiving rolls I2 and I4 Yact as feeding rolls for advancing the successive counter blanks to the slashing rolls, supplementing the feed slide I8 in thisr respect, and having also in the illustrated machine, though not necessarily, a skiving function in addition. Disregarding the skiving function the machine comprises automatic feeding rolls for advancing successive counter blanks to continuously operating slashing rolls.
In operation the feed slide.y I8 is advanced to pre-sent a'counter blank to the skiving rolls I2 and I4, the gauge 42 controlling the transverse position of the blank. The marginal edges 9| and 92 are skived as the blank passes the knife I'I. The skived blank passes directly into the bite of the slashing rolls 39 and 32, whereupon the skived edge 92 is slashed by the cuts 93 and the slashed blank ejected fromthe machine ready for the clam shelling operation. If longer or shorter slashing cuts are desired the clamping bolt 38 may be loosened and the tubular shaft 32 with the frame 35 may be slipped longitudinally one way or the other and again clamped. If the slashing knives 33 fail to cut cleanly the adjusting screws 4I may be tightened and the cutting pressure increased. If it is desired-to discontinue slashing the blanks the 'clamping bolt 38 may be removed and the frame 35 swung downwardly to the downwardly inclined position of Fig. l where it may remain out of the way in readiness for further use.
The slashing mechanism 0f my invention may be incorporated in any organization of counter machinery desired by the counter manufacturer. For example, frequently the counter blanks are passed directly from the skiving machine to clamshelling rolls, and sometimes printing rolls are interposed in the feeding path so that the blanks emerge from the machinery in skived, printed and curved or clam-shelled condition and are ready for presentation to the molding machine.
As suggested in Fig. 1 the slashing rolls 24--32 may be interposed in su'ch a system in advance of the rolls for performing these supplementary operations. The rolls 50 and 5| are mounted in an auxiliary frame at some distance behind the slashing rolls and feeding mechanism comprising an endless band or apron 52 running between guide bars 53 is provided for picking up the slashed counter blanks as they leave the rolls 24-32 and conveying them one by one to the rolls Sil-5l. The action of these rolls is to curve the blanks into U-shaped contour or to clam shell them, as it is termed in the counter industry. The feeding apron may be of any convenient length, a broken away section being suggested in Fig. 1.
It will be understood that the counter blank shown in Fig. 3 is illustrative only and that the mechanism of my invention may be adapted for slashing counters of any desired shape or design by appropriate modification, all within the scope of the invention.
Having thus disclosed my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:-
1. A machine for operating upon counters, comprising skiving mechanism of the matrix type for skiving one edge of a counter blank, and slashing mechanism geared to said skiving mechanism and including a presser roll, a rotary blade carrier arranged to engage the skived blank as it passes from the skiving mechanism, and means for adjusting the location of the blade carrier with reference to the counter blank.
2. A machine for operating on counters, including counter-feeding rolls, a frame mounted to swing toward and from said rolls and also for adjusting movement in a direction parallel to the axes of said rolls, and slashing mechanism carried thereby.
3. A machine for operating on counters, including a drive shaft, matrix skiving rolls gear driven thereby, and slashing rolls gear driven from one of the skiving rolls independently of the drive shaft.
4. A machine for operating on counters, including cooperating matrix skiving rolls, and slashing rolls arranged to receive a counter blank passing from. the skiving rolls and being axially adjustable with respect to the skiving rolls.
5. A machine for operating on counters, including a drive shaft, matrix skiving rolls driven thereby, an elongated pinion gear driven by one of said rolls, and slashing rolls gear driven by said lelongated pinion, and adjustable axially with respect to the matrix rolls.
6. A machine for operating on counters, including an anvil roll and a cooperating bladecarrying slashing roll geared thereto, and means for bodily moving one roll with respect to the other to predetermine their cutting pressure.
'7. A machine for slashing a rocker-bottom counter, which includes cooperating feeding rolls, one having a ring of short axially disposed sharpedge blades and the other a 'corresponding anvil ring of soft metal.
8. A machine for skiving and slashing a rockerbottom counter, which consists in matrix skiving rolls, an anvil roll mounted in the rear of said skiving rolls, and a cooperating roll geared to the skiving rolls and having a ring of short axially disposed slashing blades thereon.
9. A counter slashing machine having a driving shaft, a frame pivotally mounted thereon, a tubular shaft concentric with the driving shaft and driven in the opposite direction therefrom, an anvil roll carried by said tubular shaft, a geai driven shaft journalled in the frame, and a slashing roll carried by said latter shaft.
10. A machine for operating on counters, comprising a reciprocating feed slide, feed rolls arranged to advance successive counter blanks presented thereto by said feed slide, and continuously operating rotary slashing rolls cooperative i to receive blanks` from the feed rolls and to slash them.
11. A machine for slashing rocker-bottom counter blanks, comprising a work table, gauge and feed rolls for advancing successive blanks in flat condition along a predetermined path, in combination with a presser roll and a cooperating knife carrier having a series of straight spaced blades arranged to make slashing cuts of varying length in the lower marginal part of blanks presented thereto.
12. A machine for operating on counters, having in combination, cooperating skiving rolls, cooperating clam shelling rolls, feeding mechanism for conveying a skived counter blank from one set of rolls to the other, and means for slashing the blank in the course ofv its travel from one to the other.
13. A machine for operating on counters, having `in combination, counter skiving mechanism, a roll equipped with slashing knives for slashing a skived counter blank delivered to it from said skiving mechanism, rolls for performing a secondary operation on a skived and slashed blank, and feeding means for delivering successive blanks thereto.
14. A machine for operation on counters, including counter-feeding rolls and slashing mechanism including a plurality of short straight f blades spaced in parallel relation and adjustable longitudinally in a line transverse to the direction of feed, whereby the length of the slashes imparted to a counter may be varied.
