This invention relates to-quenching machines and an object of the inventionis to provide a machine of this character whereby the heat treating of all kinds of tools and diesfor the harden- 5 ing and annealing of the same is greatly simplifled; andfurther to provide -such a machine which may be easily operated. by an unskilledworkman.

Referring to the drawings by -reference numerals it will be seen that in the preferred embodiment thereof the quenching machine comprises a 25 stand or table 5 of any suitable construction and the same is provided on the top thereof with rails E, 1.
.The rail 6, in the present instance, and as clearly shown in Figure 2, is in the form of a single angle 30 iron while the rail 1 is in the form of a pair of relatively spaced angle irons.

To the under face of one side member of the frame 8 is secured by screws 35 or other fastening elements 9 a wear plate I that engages the rail 6. To the under face of an opposite side member of the carriage 8 is a wear plate H, of angle iron structure and having one flange thereof secured to the frame through the medium 40 of fastening elements l2 While the other flange of said Wear plate is accommodated between the upstanding flanges of the angleiron plates of rail 1 as also clearly shown in Figure 2.
Suitablymounted on the carriage 8 is a base 45 plate l3 from which rises a bracket |4 that is provided in the upper end thereof with a bearing IS in which is snugly fitted an internally threaded bushing l6 provided at its upper end with a flange I! as shown.

Swivelly connected with the lower end of the screw IS in any suitable manner and as indicated 55 generally at 20 is a top form 2| which consists of a casting of metal or other suitable material externally tapered as at'ZZ-andproVided with a conical bore 23 whereby at the largest or outlet end of the bore 23 is presented a sharp edge 24 that has H bearing contact with the steel die 25 to be hardened.

' Cooperable with the form 2| is asecondform28- provided'on the upper end of atubular stem 29 thatextends through the well 2 6and'has a working fit in the hereof the guide 21.
Accommodated within the well 26 is a coil spring 32 that at its upper end bears against the form 28 for yieldablyurging the latter upwardly to remain in constant contact with the lower face of the die 25 as the die contracts during the quenching or t hardening of the material of the die 25. v
The form28 is also provided with a sharpJedge 3| that engages against the die and said edge 3| is formed by tapering the upper portion of the form as at 32, externally, and by providing a dished-out recess 33 in said upper portion of the form 28. Also a bore or hole 34 extends through 25 the form 28 from the bottom of the recess 33 to the stem 29 and in alinement with the bore of the stem.
Also the form 2| is provided with a lateral intake passage 35 that is connected through the medium of piping 36 with the lateral outlet of a liquid receiving cylinder 31 that moves vertically with the form 2|. The flow of liquid from the cylinder 31 to the form 2| is controlled through the medium of any suitable valve 38 arranged in the pipe line 36.
At the top thereof the cylinder 3'! is provided with a gland 39 that accommodates a feed tube 40 connected as at 4| with the outlet 42 of a pump 43,
Pump 43 is driven from an electric motor 44 40 and said pump 43 and motor 44 are mounted on a base 45 bolted or otherwise secured as at 46 to a ledge 47 suitably provided on' the standard or bracket member I4.
To the inlet side 48 of the pump 43 there is 45 coupled one end of a pipe 49 that has a hose section 50 connected therewith and adapted to extend into a selected one of tanks 5|, 52, 53.
In connection with the tanks it will be understood that with this machine either Water in tank 50 5| or a special hardening compound in tank 52 or a quenching oil in tank 53 maybe used for treating and hardening the work or die 25.
The operation and utility of the invention will be apparent from the following: 55
The hot die 25 is placed on the form 28 after which the screw I8 is fed downwardly to engage the form 2| with the top of the die 25 to clamp the die 25 between the forms 28 and 2|. Pump 43 driven by the motor 44 is then set into operation and with the pipe extension 5!] arranged in a selected one of the tanks 5|, 52 or 53 the liquid contents of the selected tank is drawn therefrom and fed through the tube 40 to the cylinder 31. The liquid passes from the cylinder 3'! through the piping 36 into the form 2| and passes from the form 2| through the bore in the die 25 to cool and consequently harden the die. The liquid passing through the bore of the die 25 continues downwardly through the aperture 34 in the form 28 and the bore of the stem 29 to return to the tank from which it was drawn. a
It will be seen that as the die 25 cools and contracts spring 30 will expand to maintain the edge 3| of form 28 in contact with the die 25 and at the same time anupward pressure is exerted on the die to maintain the upper face thereof in engagement with the edge 24 of the form 2|. As a result the contact between theform 2| and the die 25 on the one hand and between the form 28 and the die 25 on the other hand will be such as to preclude, at all times, any escape of liquid at the points of contact between the die and the form.
In connection with the above it will be understood that the edges 24 and 3| of forms 2| and 28 are in constant contact with the die 25 so that the liquid will flow through the member 22 and then through the die 25 into the bowl 33 of member 28 and will then pass through the conduit 34 and tube 29 back into a tank. Of course, all those portions of the die contacted by the liquid will be hardened, as shown in the shaded part at the center of the die in Figure 2.
It will also be appreciated that the carriage 8 may be readily shifted along the track rails 6 and I to be properly positioned over a selected tank 5|, 52 or 53.
It is thought that a clear understanding of the construction utility and advantages of this in,-
vention will be had without a more detailed description.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is: r
A device for treating dies having passages therein comprising a base plate having an opening therein and a depending part of tubular construction forming a continuation of the opening and said depending part terminating in a tubular guide, a lower form having a chamber therein opening out through the top of the form, a tubular stem connecting with said form and in communication with the chamber thereof and passing through the opening and the depending member and having its lower part slidably arranged in the guide, a spring in the opening and 'the depending part and having its upper end with these forms, a screw shaft passing through the opening, an upper form swivelled to the lower end of the shaft and having a chamber therein opening out through the lower end of the form, the upper form being in'vertic'al alignment with the lower form and the two forms receiving between them a die to be treated, a vertically arranged tank, a'horizontally arranged pipe connecting the tank with the upper form, said pipe being in communication with the Chamber of the upper form, a pump carried by the bracket and a vertically arranged pipe connected with the discharge of the pump passing into the tank through the top thereof, said top of the tank having a sliding fit on' said pipe, the lower iorm having a fiat underface for engaging the upper face of the base plate when the lower form is in lowered position.
