. Claims.
n Y It has been found that when fountain pens are -not infuse and the writing end thereof is enclosed by the ordinary fountain pen cap that excess ink remaining inthe feed barand onl the pen point *accumulates around the outer end of the fountain v rpen section, with the result that the excess ink collects at the end of the section and flows into the fountain pen cap. Due to the leakage of ink from the fountain pen into the fountain pen cap,
the interior of the cap and thevexterior of the fountainr pen section become stained withexoess y f ink so that when the fountain pen is being used, y the hands of the user become stained with the Y excess ink.

It isvan object of this invention to provide an `improved type of fountain pen wherein an innerV sleeve in the fountain pen cap is adapted to coact rwith an ink guard on one end of the fountain pen barrel when the cap is in closed position,v to providey a seal at the inner end of the guard and at the outer end thereof'preventing the leakage ,ofi ink into the fountain pen cap and around'the iexterior of the ink guard yand the section portion of the barrel.

`Itis also an object of this invention to provide y animproved type of fountain pen vwherein the sectionend of the ink barrel is provided with an 1 improved typeof apertured ink guard and wherein the apertured fountain pen cap `is provided Vwith anvinner sleeve, which when the cap is engaged on thebarrel-will insure either a double sealbetween the ink guard and the sleeve, or a positive seal at either the inner end or the outer endof Vthe ink guard with one of the two stop shoulders formed on the inner sleeve of the cap.
It is furthermore an object of this invention to provide anrimprove'd fountain pen wherein the barrel hasa stopringor ange formed on aportion thereof to the'outside of which an improved ink guard with inclined walls is integrally formed for the reception of an inner sleeve secured Withinr the/fountain pen cap to normally provide a double seal vbetween the ink guard and the inner sleeve ofthecap when the cap is in closed position vover the barrelof the fountain pen, or provide at least one positive seal between the ink guardfand .the cap inner sleeve should one of the two'seals fail to become effective.
It is valso an important object of this invention to provide an improved type of fountain pen whereinthe barrel has a section integrally formed near one end thereof With said section terminatingat a stop ring or flange .to the outside of which is integrally formed a tapered or frustoconical shaped ink `guard having an inner seal shoulder and an outer seal shoulder for coaction with ajplurality of sealing shoulders provided at one end of van inner sleeve or cap secured in the closed end of a main fountain pen cap which is engageable over the ink guard end of the barrel Y to permit the two`sealing shoulders of the cap inner sleeve to have sealing contact with the seal sealingrshoulders of the ink guard and also a' locking engagement with said ink guard to hold thewfountain pen cap secured in position over the writing end of the fountain pen when the fountain pen is not in use.

As shown Von the drawing:
The reference numeral I indicates a fountain pen barrel, one end of which is tapered to form an integral section 2, the outer end of which terminates at a stop ring or flange 3, which separates the section 2 from an ink guard integrally formed on-the outer end of the vsection 2. The ink guard comprises a frusto-conical or inwardly tapered body portion `4 having an inclined recess or groove 5 `formed in the outer end thereof leaving an outer stop shoulder or seat '6 between the Vgroove and the outer wall of the ink guard body.
Forming part of the fountain pen construction and projecting through 4the ink guard 4 'andin'to the section 2 of the ink barrel is 'an ink feed bar 9 and a pen 'point I0. Provided in the wall ofthe ink "guard 4 is a 'suction 'reducing or vacuum breaking air port II, vthe purpose of which will hereinafter be described.
For 'the purpose of closing the Writing end of the fountain pen when the fountain pen is not in use, a cap I2 is provided which is open at one end while the other end is closed byan end wall I3. Provided in the wall of the fountain pen cap I 2 is an air port Ill located opposite the ink guard 4 when the cap is in position to close the pen. By referring to Figures 3 and 4, it will Vbe noted that the air ports I I and lI4 are both adapted to communicate with the space between the exterior of the ink guard 4 and the inner wall of the fountain pen cap I2 when the cap is engaged over the writing end of fountain pen. Secured in the closed end of the fountain pen cap I2 is an inner sleeve or inner cap I5 which is closed at one end to seat in the closed end I3 of the fountain pen cap. The opposite end -of the inner sleeve or inner 'cap `I5 isl open and is provided with an end 'tion "1 of the ink guard '4.
The end of the threaded collar or shank I8 terminates in a sealing shoulder or valve seat I9 provided for sealing contact with the inner sealing shoulder or valve seat 8 provided within the ink guard 4.
Referring to Figures 2 and 3, it will be noted that when the fountain pen is not in use and the cap is engaged over the writing end of the fountain pen that the threaded shank I8 forming part of the inner sleeve or inner cap of the main cap I2 threads into the threaded portion I of the ink guard 4 thereby providing a means for securing the cap I2 in position on the main body or :barrel of the fountain pen to enclose the ink guard, the feed bar, and pen point. The threaded shank I8 is threaded into the threaded portion 'I of the ink guarduntil the sleeve valve seat or shoulder `I seatsr against the outer sealing shoulder 6 'of the ink guard and until the end sealing shoulder or valve seat I9 of the inner sleeve I5 seats against the inner sealing shoulder or valve seat 8 of the ink guard. It will thus be noted that with an accurate construction of the ink guard and the inner sleeve of the cap I2 that a double seal fis provided between the inner cap and the ink guard. When 'it is desired to use the fountain pen, it -'is only necessary to rotate the Vcap l2 to rst break the double seal between the inner sleeve and the ink guard at which time the suction action within the inner sleeve I5 is broken bythe provision of the air port I-I, and the suction action or partial vacuum between the cap I2 and the exterior 4of the enclosed section end of the fountain pen barrel -is also broken Vby the provision of the air port I4. By the provision of the air ports I I and I4, any suction action which might arise with the removal of the cap is broken, so that there is no tendency of the ink from the interior of the fountain pen to be sucked or drawn out lof the feed bar. The air ports also facilitate dryingout of the interior of the cap around the enclosed exterior portion of the `section 2 vand the ink guard ld, and also act to obviate the tendency of sweating of the enclosed parts of the fountain pen when Vthe'cap-I 2 is in Aclosed position.
In case the threaded Yshank portion I8 of the inner sleeve I5 of the 'fountain pen cap is too long, only an inner seal will be provided between the end of the shank portion 'I8 and 'the sealing shoulder 8 of the link guard, as clearly illustrated in Figure 6, since the sealing shoulder I6 is not permitted to contact the outer sealing shoulder 5 of the ink guard.
Where the threaded neck or collar I8 of the inner sleeve i5 of the fountain pen cap is slightly shorter than it should be, a'n outer seal only is provided between the sealing shoulder I of the sleeve I5 and the sealing shoulder t ofthe ink guard, for the reason that the end sealing shoulder IQ of `the extension 'I8 'is not permitted to Icontact or seat against the inner sealing shoulder 8 of the ink guard. It `will thus be noted that'in `a normal `condition with the proper construction of the ink guard and the inner sleeve of Athe :fountain pen cap that a double seal is provided between the ink guard and the inner sleeve of the cap, and that 'in case of any slight discrepancy inthe length of the threaded collar or shank I8 of the inner sleeve i5, there will always be veither an outer seal or an inner seal between the ink guard and the inner sleeve of the fountain pen cap, as `illustrated in Figures-6 and 7 of the drawing.
When the cap 'I2 is in proper closed position engaged over the writing end of the fountain pen, l
the collar I8 of lthe inner sleeve II5 engages in the ink guard 4 to form a substantially perfect lockingfseal therewith, locking out any possible air circulation, thereby preventing evaporation or leakage of the ink and the elimination of sweat- 5r ing. around and on the pen point.
. When the fountain pen'cap I2 is removed from the body or barrel of the fountain rpen to permit fusev of the fountain pen, attention is called to the fact that when any ink accumulates at the outer end of the ink guard 4 onthe sealing shoulder 6, that such excess ink is permitted to krapidly flow inwardly on the inclined wall of the groove 5 into the chamber provided in thek main body portion of the ink guard 4. The inclined `fgroove 5 also permits the return of ink into the ink guard and back into the fountain pen when vthe cap. I2 is engaged over the writing end of the fountain pen.

5. A fountain pen including in combination a barrel, an ink guard formed thereon and having an air port therein, and a cap for removable engagement on the barrel and provided with an air port to be positioned in communicating relationship with the air port in the ink guard when the cap is in closed position.
6. A fountain pen including in combination a barrel, a section integrally formed on one end' thereof, a peripheral flange formed on the outer end of the section, and a tapered ink guard formed on said section adjacent the stop flange, said ink guard having an air port therein and also having an inclined recess in the outer end thereof.
7. A fountain pen including in combination a barrel, a section integrally formed thereon, a peripheral stop flange integrally formed on the end of the section, an ink guard integrally formed ron the section adjacent the peripheral flange, said ink guard having an air port therein and also provided with an inclined groove in the outer end thereof, a cap having an air port therein, and a sleeve secured in said cap for sealingly intertting with the ink guard when the cap is in closed position on the barrel to position the cap air port in communicating relationship with the air port in the ink guard.
8. In a fountain pen, a tapered ink guard having an air port therein and an inclined groove in the outer end thereof.
9. A fountain pen including in combination an outwardly flaring ink guard having an air port therein and also having an inner stop shoulder and an outer stop shoulder formed thereon, a cap for removable engagement on the fountain pen to enclose the ink guard, said cap having an air port therein adapted to be positioned in communicating relationship with the air port in the ink guard when the cap is in closed position, and a double shouldered sleeve in said cap for air tight sealing contact with the shoulders of the ink guard when the cap is in closed position, to obviate ink leakage and sweating and the elimination of air circulation within the closed fountain pen.
10. A fountain pen body construction comprising a barrel, a section integrally formed on one end thereof, a stop flange integrally formed on the end o-f the section, and a tapered ink guard integrally formed on the end of the section to the outside of the stop flange, said ink guard having ran air port formed therein and an inclined groove Y in the outer end thereof and also being provided with inner and outer stop shoulders.
11. A fountain pen comprising a barrel, a tapered section integrally formed on one end thereof and provided with internal threads, said ink .guard having an airport therein and an ink receiving recess in the outer end thereof, said recess Vhaving an inclined wall for facilitating the return of ink into the ink guard, said ink guard also having inner and outer sealing shoulders formed thereon, an apertured cap for the fountain pen, and a sleeve secured in said cap and formed with an exteriorly threaded portion and with a plurality of sealing shoulders, said threaded portion of the sleeve adapted to be threaded into the threaded portion of the ink guard when the cap is vmoved into closed position to bring the stop shoulders of the cap sleeve into sealing contact with the shoulders of :the :ink -guard to provide a double seal Within the fountain pen..
12. A fountain pen including in combination a barrel, an internally vthreaded tapered apertured ink guard integrally `formed on one end thereof and provided with an inner andan outer stop shoulder, an apertured cap for removable engagement on said barrel to enclose `the ink guard, and an externally threaded sleeve secured in the capi `and provided with inner and outer stop shoulders, said externally Vthreaded sleeve adapted to be threaded'into 'the ink guard to hold the cap locked in position with either one or both of the stop shoulders of the sleeve .engaging one or both of the stop shoulders of the ink guard to provide a seal between the sleeve and the ink guard when the cap is in closed position.
13. A fountain pen including in combination la barrel, a cap for removable engagement on one end of the barrel, said cap having ian air port therein, an apertured ink guard formed on `the barrel to be enclosed by the cap, and means in said cap for releasably locking the cap iin .position on the barrel yby a locking engagement of said means with the ink guard.
