My invention relates to improvements in footwear and more particularly to devices for securing the heels to soles of shoes and the like.

One of the principal objects of my invention is to provide a device for securing the heel to the sole of a shoe which is so fashioned and constructed as to permit adjustment of the heel relative to the sole before finally securing the heel to the sole.

Another object of my invention is to provide a device of the above described character which is simple in construction, reliable in use, efficient in operation and economical in manufacture.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, appended claims and annexed drawing.

Referring to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a heel portion of a shoe, partly in section, illustrating my device securing the heel to the sole of the shoe.

Figure 2 is a fragmentary top plan view of a heel portion of the shoe, the insole lining being broken away to illustrate my invention applied thereto.

Figure 3 is a sectional View taken. on the line 33 of Figure 1.

In practicing my invention I provide a shoe, the heel portion of which is illustrated as comprising outsole, insole and

insole lining

5, 6 and 'l respectively and a heel 8 attached to the outer face of the outsole.

The outsole and insole are fashioned with an aperture 9, the upper section of which is of a larger diameter than the lower section. Secured within the upper section is an inverted cap formed with an interiorly disposed concave seat H having a bolt opening l2 extending therethrough. The upper end of the cap Ill is fashioned with a circumfercntially extending flange counter-sunk within the insole 6.

The upper face of the heel 8 is of a like contour as the lower face of the outsole 6 and is initially attached thereto by means of glue, cement or the like whereby to secure the upper faceof the heel in appressed condition with the lower face of the outsole 5. The heel is fashioned with a vertically extending socket 53 in the upper section thereof and with a horizontally extending slot i i effecting communication with the exterior of the heel through the front, or forward face thereof. A threaded bolt E5, of a diameter less than the diameter of the socket i3, is positioned within the socket l3 and is provided with a hemispherical shaped head [8 located within the cap and in engagement with the seat ll thereof.

Said bolt I is provided with a downwardly extending shank I! having a pointed end l8 adapted to penetrate the heel below the lower 5 end of the socket l3. The shank I'l, adjacent the head !6, is of a reduced diameter to permit swiveling movement of the bolt relative to the cap l6 whereby to effect adjustment of the bolt relative to the heel. Secured within the 10 slot M by the threaded engagement of the bolt passing therethrough is a nut l9 and interposed between the nut l9 and the upper wall of the slot I4 is .a spring washer 20 for maintaining the nut l9 locked to the bolt I5. The nut, together with the washer 20, is inserted within the slot 14 from the front face of the heel after the heel has been adjusted to the outsole 5. When the heel has been applied to the outsole 5, the cap l0 having the bolt l5 extending therefrom is inserted within the aperture 5! and the bolt threaded into the nut I9 to bind the heel to the outsole against dislodgement therefrom.

From the foregoing it will be noted that the heel is capable of being applied and adjusted on the outsole previous to the insertion of the nut and introduction of the bolt, thereby permitting the same nut and bolt to be used with each heel replacement. When the parts are thus assembled, the insole lining is applied over the outer face of the insole and conceals the head of the bolt and cap from view.

What I claim is:

1. In a shoe, the combination of a sole provided in the heelattaching section with an aperture extending therethrough, a cap within said aperture, a heel appressed against said section and formed in the upper section thereof with an upwardly extending socket and a slot intersecting said socket and effecting communication with 40 the exterior of said heel, a nut positioned in said slot and capable of being inserted in and removed therefrom when said heel is against said sole, and a bolt swiveled to said cap and extending through said nut for fixing said heel to said 5 sole.

2. In a shoe, the combination of a sole provided in the heel attaching section with an aperture extending therethrough, a cap secured within said aperture and fashioned with an interior concave seat, a heel appressed against said section and formed in the upper section thereof with an upwardly extending socket and a horizontally extending slot intersecting said socket and effect ing communication with the exterior of said heel,

terior concave seat, a heel appressed against said section and formed in the upper section thereof with an upwardly extending socket and ahorizontally extending slot intersecting said socket and eifecting communication with the exterior of said heel, a spring pressed nut positioned in saidt slot and capable of insertion in and removable from said slot while said heel is appressed against said sole, a bolt fashioned with a hemispherical head seated in said seat of saidcap for effecting swivel connection therewith and a shank extending through said nut whereby to-secure said heel to said sole, and an insole lining carried by said sole covering said cap whereby to conceal the latter and preclude foreign matter from entering said cap.

4. In a shoe, the combination of a sole provided in the heel attaching section with an aperture extending therethrough, a cap within said aperture, a heel appressed against said section and formed in the upper. section thereof with an upwardly extending socket and a slot intersecting said socket and effecting communication with the exterior of said heel, a nut positioned in said slot and capable of being inserted in and removed therefrom when said heel is:

c against saidsole, a bolt swiveled to said cap and extending through said nut for fixing said heel to said sole; and an insole lining carried by said sole covering said cap whereby to conceal the latter and preclude foreign matter from entering said cap.
