4 Claims.
My invention relates to shoe lasts and refers particularly to extensible lasts.
My device comprises a two-piece last of such construction that the normal longitudinal dimension can be varied and can be readily increased and decreased, thus facilitating its employment in the manufacture of shoes.
While lasts having the same general properties have been known, my device has specific novelties in construction which render it a valuable advance in the art to which it pertains.
In the accompanying drawing, I show a preferred form of my device from which its valuable features may be readily appreciated.

Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device of my invention.
Figure 2 is a side view of the device of Figure 1.

Figure 5 is a plan view of one form of a device employed in the operation of my device.
The particular form of my device shown in the accompanying drawing comprises a shoe last having the forward, or foot portion I0 and the rear, or heel portion l l, the face I 2 of the portion H] and the face l3 of the portion ll being inclined with respect to the longitudinal axis of the last, or to the plane upon which bottoms l4 and I5 respectively, rest when in natural position, thus allowing the two parts of the last to slide over each other.
A recess I6 enters thefoot portion In from its inclined face l2, the recess extending downwardly along the face l2 in the form of a narrow elongated opening l1.
Positioned within the recess l6l1 is a member adapted to move the members It and II over their respective inclined faces I2 and I 3, having the threaded element l8 positioned within the foot portion It and extending outwardly into the recess 16, the thus extended portion I9 being angular in cross-section. Two metallic washers 20, 20 are placed upon the element I9 and a pin 2|, is inserted through a hole in the extended element. The inner end of the member It carries a washer 22 which is maintained in place by the screw 23 threaded within the extremity of the member l8.
The heel member II has a narrow recess 24 extending inwardly from its face 13 within which is positioned a plate 25 extending outwardly from the face l3 in the form of an internally threaded cylindrical member 26, the threads of which mesh with the exterior threads of the member IS. The plate 25 is maintained in position by means of a screw 21 passing through a hole in the plate 25.
It will thus be seen that if the screw I8 is revolved clockwise the heel portion II will move upwardly with respect to the toe portion l0 and if the screw l8 be revolved anti-clockwise the heel portion II will move downwardly with respect to the toe portion lo, the inclined faces of the two members being in abutment during such motions of the heel member H.
In employing the last of my invention, it is placed in the position shown in Figure 2 with the toe portion in full lines and the heel portion in dotted lines, that is, in a somewhat raised position, the leather or other material is placed over the last and attached therein in the usual manner. The threaded member [8 is then revolved anti-clockwise by placing the recess 29 of operating device 28 around the angular portion IQ of the threaded member I8, or otherwise.
This movement causes the heel portion H to move downwardly across the face [2 of the toe member It, thus elongating the last and stretching the leather, or other material, to the desired shape and size.
In order to remove the stretched material from the last, the threaded member I8 is revolved clockwise, thus shortening its longitudinal axis.
It is to be particularly noted that the exposed portion of the threaded member [8 is so positioned with respect to the other members of the last, that it can be conveniently and readily revolved from above the heel portion H, the leather, or other material upon the last being separated at this point thus forming an opening for the insertion of the turning device.
I do not limit myself to the particular size, number or arrangement of parts specifically shown and described as these are given solely for the purpose of clearly explaining the device of my invention.
What I claim is:
1. In a last, in combination, a toe element having a plane face positioned diagonally to the longitudinal axis of the last, an upper recess .extending inwardly from said plane face of said toe element, a lower narrow recess extending downwardly from said upper recess and opening outwardly through said plane face of said toe member, a threaded revoluble member within said two recesses and abutable upon the upper face of said upper recess, means adapted to prevent the downward movement of said revoluble member, means adapted to allow of the revolution of said revoluble member; a heel element having a plane face positioned diagonally to the longitudinal axis of said last and slidably abutable upon the diagonal face of said toe element, a recess extending inwardly from said plane face, a member fixedly positioned within said recess and extending therefrom and means carried by said extended member adapted to mesh with the threads of said threaded member carried by said toe element.
2. In a last, in combination, a toe element having a plane face positioned diagonally to the longitudinal axis of the last, an upper recess extending inwardly from said plane face of said toe element, a lower narrow recess extending downwardly from said upper recess and opening outwardly through said plane face of said toe member, a threaded revoluble member within said two recesses and abutable upon the upper face of said upper recess, means adapted to prevent the downward movement of said revoluble member, means carried by the upper portion of said revoluble member adapted to allow of the revolution of said revoluble member; a heel element having a plane face positioned diagonally to the longitudinal axis of said last and slidably abutable upon the diagonal face of said toe element, a recess extending inwardly from said plane face, a member fixedly positioned within said recess and extending therefrom and means carried by said extended member adapted to mesh with the threads of said threaded member carried by said toe element.
3. In a last, in combination, a toe element having a plane face positioned diagonally to the longitudinal axis of the last, an upper recess extending inwardly from said plane face of said toe element, a lower narrow recess extending downwardly from said upper recess and opening outwardly through said plane face of said toe member, a threaded revoluble member within said two recesses and abutableupon the upper face of said upper recess, means adapted to prevent the downward movement of said revoluble member, means adapted to allow of the revolution of said revoluble member; a heel element having a plane face positioned diagonally to the longitudinal axis of said last and slidably abutable upon the diagonal face of said toe element, a recess extending inwardly from said plane face, a member fixedly positioned within said recess and extending therefrom and internally threaded cylindrical means carried by said extended member adapted to mesh with the threads of said threaded member carried by said toe element.
4. In a last, in combination, a toe element having a plane face positioned diagonally to the longitudinal axis of the last, an upper recess extending inwardly from said plane face of said toe element, a lower narrow recess extending downwardly from said upper recess and opening outwardly through said plane face of said toe member, a threaded revoluble member within said two recesses and abutable upon the upper face of said upper recess, means adapted to prevent the downward movement of said revoluble member, means carried by the upper portion of said revoluble member adapted to allow of the revolution of said revoluble member; a heel element having a plane face positioned diagonally to the longitudinal axis of said last and slidably abutable upon the diagonal face of said toe element, a recess extending inwardly from said plane face, a member fixedly positioned within said recess and extending therefrom and internally threaded cylindrical means carried by said extended member adapted to mesh with the threads'of said threaded member carried by said toe element.
