2- Claims.
This invention relates to window constructions and has for its object a compound window including inner and outer sheet metal sash frames, the outer sash frame having an opening and closing movement and being constructed to entirely cover or form a face plate for the inner sash frame, when the outer sash frame is open.
It further has for its object a window structure in which the inner screen sash frame is stationary, and the outer glass sash frame seats in the inner frame and has an opening and closing movement, and when closed, seats in the screen frame and forms a cover or face plate for the screen frame.
It also has for its object a particularly simple and compact arrangement of an inner and outer sash frame, wherein the inner sash carries the screen and the outer sash a glass pane and the outer sash nests within and forms a complete cover or face plate for the inner sash.
Other objects will appear throughout the specification.
The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation of a window embodying our invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view on line 22, Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view on line 3-3, Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary inner or rear elevation of this window structure.
The invention comprises, generally, an inner sheet metal sash frame extending into and substantially fitting a window opening and having a marginal circumferential flange overlying the outer face of the window frame, and with a recess, the bottom of which faces outwardly, for receiving an outer sash frame which has an opening and closing movement, the outer sash frame having a glass receiving channel nesting into said recess and a circumferential marginal flange lapping and covering the marginal flange of the inner sash frame. There is a weather stripping between the margins of these circumferential flanges and also a screen is secured, as will be hereinafter described, to the bottom of the recess of the inner sash frame.

3 designates a sheet metal inner sash frame, this being the frame that carries a screen. The inner frame consists of a body portion 4 which telescopes into or fits into the window opening 2, an outer circumferential marginal flange 5 overlying the margin of the window frame I around the window opening 2 and secured thereto in any suitable manner, as by screws 6, and a flange I extending inwardly from the inner edge of the body portion 4 and together with the body portion 4 forming a recess. The flange 1 forms the bottom of the recess and faces outwardly. The flange I is formed with a reversely folded portion 8 around which the margin of the screen 9 is folded as shown at IU (Figure 2), and the screen is retained or clamped in position by elongated strips or clips I1 U-shaped in cross-section and embracing the folded margins 10 and clamping them between the walls of the U-shaped clip H and the reversely folded portion 8.
The edge portions 12 of the circumferential flange 5 is extended inwardly at an angle to the body of the flange 5 forming a lip.
l4 designates the outer sheet metal sash frame whichsupports the glass pane IS. The frame l4 comprises a body portion or flange I6 which fits or telescopes into the body 4 of the inner frame, a marginal circumferential flange ll overlying the flange 5 of the inner frame and a channelshaped member I8 for receiving the margin of the glass pane [5, this being arranged with its bottom portion against the body l6 and secured thereto, as by welding. The outer side flange of the channel l8 and the flange 11 are co-planar and, .as here shown, are covered by a metal veneer strip 20, the margins of which are folded around the edges of the flanges l1 and I8. This veneer strip is of a polished material, as a chromium plated strip. The outer edge portion Il of the flange I1 is shaped toenclose or house the lip l2 of the flange 5 and a suitable weather strip 2| is located between the lip H and the lip 12. This weather strip consists of a piece of flexible material, as rubber, clamped between the extreme edge of the lip l2 and the window frame I.
The glass receiving channel l8 and the body I6 of the outer frame nest into the recess formed by the body portion 4 and bottom I of the inner frame, and when the outer sash frame is in closed position, the inner frame is entirely covered or concealed by the outer frame, particularly by the flange H. The outer frame I4 is hinged to one of the frame members of the inner frame and is here shown as hinged to the top rail member of the inner frame, so as to be swung outwardly into different inclinations from closed position. It is shifted by suitable means, here shown as brace members 212, each hinged or pivoted at 23 to a lug 24 on the inner side of each of the upright side members or stiles of the outer frame member I41 and as extending through a slot 25 in the bottom flange I of the corresponding stile of the inner frame. Each brace 22 interlocks with the 'wall at the lower end of the slot 25 in any angular position or inclination of the outer frame M and is here shown as provided with notches 26 for interlocking at 21 with the end wall of the slot 25. Preferably, a cover plateis provided for each slot 25, which is capable of sliding during the pivotal movement of the brace 22.
29 designates the cover plate which is slidable on the inner side of the bottom flange i of the recess in which the outer frame I 4 is nested, it being here shown as provided with a pin-andslot connectionrat 3!) with the flange '1. The latch plate 29 is also formed with a slot 3! of sufficient length to permit a slidable fit of the brace 22. When the inner sash is in closed position, the brace 22 is folded down into a vertical line and engaged with a hook-shaped lug 32 on the window frame, as seen in Figure 3. There is a brace 22 at each side of the outer sash frame M.
The outer sash I4 is hinged along its upper rail to the upper rail of the inner sash by a hinge-joint capable of shedding water or in the form of a hollow drip molding, and as seen in Figure 3, this joint consistsof a leaf .33 rigid with the body portion 4 of the top rail of the inner frame and formed with a circular bead or roll 34 located out of the plane of the inner frame; and the outer sash frame I4 is provided with a leaf 35 along its top rail formed with a bead or roll 36 within theroll 34. I'he inner bead rolls in the outer bead during the opening and closing movement of the outer sash M. The outer sash 14 can be demounted by swinging the sash I4 into horizontal position, this carrying the braces 22 entirely free of the inner frame, and then moving the outer sash l4 axially. It can be replaced by. the reverse of these movements.
This window construction is particularly adapted for motor vehicles or trailers, as it provides a simple and compact window unit including a window screen frame and a window glass frame, which has an opening and closing movement, and which, when closed, entirely covers or forms a facing for the screen frame.
What we claim is:-
1. In a window construction, the combination with a Window frame enclosing a window opening, of a frame extending into the window opening and formed with a slot, a sash frame hinged to the former frame and having an opening and closing movement, means for opening and closing the sash frame and holding it in open position including a brace pivoted at one end to the sash and extending through said slot, and a cover plate covering the slot and mounted on the first frame to slide thereon and also having a slot alined with the former slot, the brace slidably fitting the latter slot and having one or more notches for coacting with an end wall of the first mentioned slot, the cover plate being operable by the pivotal movement of the brace.
2. In a window construction, the combination with a window frame confining a window opening; of inner and outer sash frames, the inner sash frame having a portion right angular in cross section telescoping into the window opening, the angular formation forming a recess for receiving the outer sash frame, the angular formation also providing the inner sash with a circumferential flange lapping the outer margin of the window frame around the window opening, means for securing the flange to the window frame, the side of the angular formation forming the bottom of the recess having means for supporting a screen adjacent the outersash and when the outer sash is closed, the outer sash having an opening and closing movement and being seated in the recess, when closed, and the outer sash also having a flange covering the circumferential flange of the inner sash forming a facing, whereby when the outer sash is closed, the inner sash is completely covered, and the outer sash forms a facing for the inner sash, and means for opening and closing the outer sash from the inner side of the inner sash.
